    Love what you do! When I was little my entire backyard was covered with flowering clover. Always barefoot, I got stung about 3 or 4 times a week😉 I always removed the stinger by squeezing the end..lol? Now (50 years later) my entire yard is still covered with flowering clover, but Sadly No Bees.😞 I want to thank you for your hard work to increase the bee population. Your work is so important and appreciated. 😊🍯

    So I just watched your video about euthanizing that super aggressive hive....man an absolute difference in temperament. Out of curiosity, if the aggressive hive was still in place, would you have been able to conduct the inspection on this hive with the level of protection you were using?

      @BlueTrane2028 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I was drawn in by the euthanizing video. Seeing how this one is, that was the absolute correct decision. I've seen yellow jackets that were more docile...

      he said a couple times in the other video of aggressive hive, he couldnt approach the other hive at all.. hell, he said they were harassing the dog and his family which are very far away.

      Absolutely not. I did try and I got stung over a half dozen times. I ended up tucking my tail between my legs and going back to the house to get a bee suit. Even with the suite on the bees from the other hive was stinging my bare hands and I ended up putting gloves on. So glad the harassment is over.

    I built a 15-frame Layens last year and built a 7-frame Layens NUC this year. Both are doing great and very easy to work with. I plan to build a 21-frame for next year.

    You really should have blocked the second entrance, by doing that you would have had 2 or 3 frames of honey only at the left of the hive followed by the brood chamber frames, followed by honey only frames. If you had fitted a queen exclude after the brood chamber section , you would have honey only frames from which you could collect honey, without disturbing the brood chamber.
    The idea of a Layens hive is that the bees treat it like a tree hollow, with honey store at the top of the frame, a circular brood section in the middle surrounded by pollen as bread for the bees to feed the bee laver
    Having only one entrance means that the bees can find it easier to defend the hive and control the hive temperature

    Thank you for your video. I compared the progress of different horizontal hives and the Layen’s is the one that I have noticed does the best. The worst would be the Langstroth Horizontal as to the building of combs and expansion and then the messiest would be the top bar, especially when for their last one, the beekeeper did not level the hive.

      To run a top bar and get straight bars I did a trick. I by accident built my top bar hive where it can hold a langstroth frame but the frame has to be cut to the right shape. Used follower as a pattern to cut already drawn langstroth frames with a circular saw. I was shocked when it actually cut them nicely. By sandwiching a bar between those two drawn frames I got them to pull bar after bar perfectly straight. Used popsicle sticks on the bars as guides.
      I gave up.on top bars and run langstroth hives. Around 40 of them. Top bars are swarmy

      Maybe you saw my other video about my 'top bar' frame creating nuc.... I checked it today and it has successfully built out the additional comb I gave it so I can get my top bar going again. Standing up that Top Bar is on my near term to-do list. KI

      Nope. Your wrong ! I have a Langstroth Horizontal, made from an ex Log Storage Box.
      Sloping metal Roof on hinges.
      Box has 5 inches of Sheep's Wool within cavity as good insulation. (I am in Scotland, so lots of wool here.) Then an Inner Box of Ply, to the dimensions of Langstroth frame, & Bee space needs. Then Old Boards place on top laid above Frames, running in the same orientation. Some have 2 inch holes cut in them, with plastic glass glued in place. (Perfect viewing windows, where Bee can be seen below, without suiting up !) Whole thing cost about £100 / $180 or so to create.
      I have the Brood Chamber to the left, away to the right, all Frames can be moved backwards and forwards up to or beyond the Queen Excluder, so frames are in the Super position. Re Honey stores. When the Hive expands and contracts the frame numbers can be added or reduced, with an end Frame / Dummy board. This means Bee work to appropriate space. Minimum Swarming, or Dying in winter.
      The Feeder is in situ under the Roof, so access to fill is easy as no bees get above inner boards. Simple ! 🐝 Highly recommend Long Horizontal Hives. 🤗

    I want bees as a pet. Not for the honey, they can keep it. I just want the bees. They would love the flower garden I am planting in the fall. I'd probably just sit outside and read a book while hanging out with bees.

    Love the Horizontal hives that use a regular deep frame. saves on the back and can let them work up to 30 frames if needed. The other plus is if needed you can exchange frames with regular deep box Hibes

    so what can you do with that hive? How are you going to harvest honey or is it just to raise bees?

    How do you ventilate a box like that if the frame top bars are all touching and closed off? I'm interested in one like that.

    • @nwnjba
      @nwnjba  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bees do it. It is not unlike a tree with a single entrance. That being said, some beekeepers I know with these drilled holes in the top and closed them off with screen. KI

    All healthy hives have a honeydome,not just trees...Alot of this same info gets repeated as if only horizontal hives have honey over brood so it's already there for bees, problem is ALL my langstroth hives have it also,not just my Layen style ...

    • @nwnjba
      @nwnjba  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My point for calling that out is it is really pronounced with this hive form factor. Given that bars interrupt the face of the comb in a Langstroth, it is not as evident, but yes it is common there too.

      Those are draw strings for the veil that hangs down from the hat that he wears to protect his head.

    • @nwnjba
      @nwnjba  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They secure the veil and also draw tension on the bottom so bees cannot get in. Not very flattering, but they are effective. KI
