Am from Ukraine and was a sailor in NAVY of the exUSSR. That chap named Hornblower is akind of a charming and braveone at the same time. Really like him, love NAVY and all of YOU ladies & GENTLEMEN!)))
In one of the books (don't remember which) he gives instructions to a midshipman how to make coffee. Get the beans, got to the galley (or some other fire) and roast them. Go to the doctor, borrow the mortar and pestle to grind the beans. Go back to the galley and boil. There's a good lad go...
I love Bush's handling of Major Cotard. He's absolutely right to check Cotard's orders, and while Hornblower's away, he's in charge and makes sure that Cotard knows his rank, nobility and connections do not give him the right to flout the Captain's authority.
Hornblower knows how to deal with the sailors quite well. He was particularly good with the Sailing Master. It is often very hard for a young officer to gain the respect of the senior sailors of his crew.
Yes, this is spot on. A young officer of captain needs to learn to command, bot be a friend to his crew and also try to not be a tyrant. Fine line to tread. I was not in a navy, but I was a captain before I was 25. It was not easy, especially when you were the youngest person on board and the boss of men twice your age.
You want one for all sorts of seamanship, and you want the other one when all "Heck" is about to break loose to help win the battle!!! Different strengths, and both are vital for a ship at war...
Julia Sawahla is such a marvelous actress, she portrays Mariah perfectly so she seems plain and a dowdy but if you actually look at her you realize how much a freaking gorgeous woman she is!
The only thing I can even criticize about this show is that the average British sailor didn't wear a uniform, per se, until the 1840's. Captains paid for a uniform suit out of their own pocket for his boat crew or out of prize money, but the workaday wear of a Royal Navy ship was the same as everyone else: out of the slops chest.
The uniforms could be paid by the Captain, and I could see Sir Edward Pellew (a real person, who was loved by his crew and actually jumped overboard to save a man who fell overboard and couldn't swim! And yes sailing ships often did and on the larger modern ones still do have a line towed behind them since they can't stop like a modern ship and pick people up easily) allowing extra funds for various captains to have "dress uniforms" for their crews so that the ships in his command looked "fancier" than the ships under someone else's Flag.
If any man could be so lucky to have a Woman like Mariah waiting for him. She is not just a woman, She is Home. A woman worth giving your soul and sword for.
Bush has a way of insulting people. "Learn this ship like the back of your hand or you'll feel the back of mine"... "Learn to cook or I'll cook you"... "Learn to break dance or I'll break your face". I might've imagined the last one.
Big difference between prison cooking and cooking for someone of rank! Hence the appearance of "That Criminal Doughty" in the next episode: Duty. Of course, everyone realized the the "mistake" that Hornblower made at the end wasn't a mistake. Instead it was Justice .vs. the No Exceptions of Admiralty Laws.
@herrcaptain lol i know what you mean. another great series with here is 'martin chuzzlewit.' she's pretty flighty in that one too although in an innocent way
Perhaps someone might no this, but at frame 3:22, when they are hauling down the ensign, that round thing above looks awfully like a standard radar reflector used in sailboat rigging some 200 years after this movie takes place. Any thoughts?
> It actually may be a reflector since they did use modern sailing ships for the filming of this series! (.vs. CG or everything in a studio!). > Even though I'm an engineer and was always deep inside a modern warship I do know that there are various things you put on hoists to show what you're doing. Things like "I'm towing", or perhaps for sailing ships in a crowded anchorage ""I'm getting ready to get underway" since they don't have a loud ship's horn (siren for you Brits). However, that probably be at the mainmast and not at the quarterdeck's Spanker mast...
Note: when you get underway (on a warship) you lower your nation's flag at the stern and raise another one at the mainmast. This is why if you ever watch a realistic movie about a warship, you will hear "Shift Colors, Underway". And when the ship is anchored or tied up "Moored, shift colors". >> What I mean by the disc being on the mainmast, is that all of a sudden it will be quickly lowered since it is on the same line (rope) as the colors, but on the opposite side of the pulley at the top of the mainmast.... Another indication (on radar) that the sailing ship is underway, besides a slow moving dot on your radar screen...
Its that or it has to do with his seniority as a matter of time. I remember reading one of the novels a few months ago and I believe it mentioned something about gaining the second.
He is only a commander so he only has got one. When he becomes a captain he will have two. And a Commodore has some more/extra decoration on his jacket and shoulder things. No idea what they are called ...
I'm surprised a man as intuitive as Horatio did not notice the vast number/increase of Irishmen serving on the ship especially after the Irishman last time..who warned him they'd help the French, as an Englishmen I love the Irish but they SHOULD get their country back and independence..they scare me shiteless LOL
Why does Hornblower have only one Epaulette? Im not aware of the types of uniforms of the Royal Navy in the Early 19th Century, and how they are worn. Thanks to anyone who responds.
TheBType: You’ve got to be. Men need a good firm hand and proper training to deal with all of the perils of going to sea in a tiny wooden ship, no modernities, no comforts...As well as a lot of the menial crew ‘pressed’ into service against their will.

"cofee shouldn't be..."
"Boiled, William? I know, I know."
My favorite quote.

Matthews and Styles. One of the best parts of the series.

"Learn to cook, or i will cook you!" Epic line..
I don't know who the Lt (XO) is, but he is the best second in command ever! He backs his CO up and sorts the men out.
I've read several series of books about the English Navy, but this opens a whole new world, this series is well done.

I love Mathews and Mr. Bush. Great sailors and great men.
You forgot Styles! The man you want when there's close quarters fighting!!!
The Hornblower character here is far different than the one in the books.
That look on Bush when Cotard was complaining lol and when Hornblower replied to that 🤣

the miserable franchises always feel superiors to others
This shit is just pure fantasy, and I fucking love every second of it!

Such a shame they didn't make more of these. Truly a brilliant series.

I like how Horatio calls Bush "William" at 6:59 lol, aww :)
Bush has a way of insulting people. "Learn this ship like the back of your hand or you'll feel the back of mine"... "Learn to cook or I'll cook you"... "Learn to break dance or I'll break your face".
I might've imagined the last one.
How Bush keeps that pompous stuffed Turkey at Bay....PRICELESS
LOVE hammond's attempt to bawl out. He's rather young isn't he? ;)
the french officers accent keeps slipping into an irish one
Oh, I'm missing Wellard and Kennedy...
I like the forward facing hats much better then the side ways ones they should only be reserved for good old boney
I think officers just shouted random words when it was time to go somewhere. LOOSE the JUICE!!! PREPARE TO SPIN DAVENPORT!
i miss willard and kennedy they were both so cute
Horatio doesn’t really love Mariah. He is waiting for Lady Barbara.
"Thank you, Matthews."
8:53 Styles tried to learn cooking and it went badly

@ 8:53
this is why you never let scorpion stay inside the galley.
Yay for Matthews and Stiles :D But I still miss Archie :(
There are some much more interesting women in later Hornblower books. I only wish they would make more of them for the TV.
Show. This is episode 7 out of 8. Google an episode guide for hornblower so that you can know the names and orders of the episodes.
2 days and she's still a knitting machine!
@herrcaptain lol i know what you mean. another great series with here is 'martin chuzzlewit.' she's pretty flighty in that one too although in an innocent way
'Learn to cook... or I'll cook you. Understand?'
When The Doctor tells you to do something-ya do it.

No wonder they stopped making Hornblower movies, it's because they need a new ship every time
I made you these mittens - in less than 12 hours..... SHE'S A KNITTING MACHINE!!!
@ 9:52
ok, who left Scorpion in there? everybody knows you don't confine scorpion to a small space!
:P
6:12 mixed with his naked request in Retribution makes me worry about Hornblower sometimes...
CAPITAINE ORNBLOWER!!!
He is only a commander so he only has got one. When he becomes a captain he will have two.
And a Commodore has some more/extra decoration on his jacket and shoulder things. No idea what they are called ...
Junior captains still only had one, it was just on the opposite side. They got two epaulettes as senior post-captains.
@penwielder Sitting at the very least would be a distant memory under Saywer.

I think 1 epaulet is a commander and 2 is a post Captain?
mmm that breakfast looked tasty hehe :)
They would have actually used buckets filled with water, not a pump especially since this ship is one of the smaller vessels.
Bush is so damn cool.
of course, it could be this newfangled "metal" thing...
U guys remember Wellard in Retribution... i would want to watch that chapter but to see him die so young does not make me feel good.
You think he would have given her a kiss. He probably never would've seen her again, it wasn't the days of facebook.
why is one of hornblowers shoulder things missing?
Shoulder things = epaulettes, I believe.
What did Stiles do to make Bush hate him?
@herrcaptain yes it is. Julia Sawalha
you're basically correct.
Old fashioned. Nelson and Lord Keith would have done the same. I believe Anson would have done the same
how did they forget that the only good forg was A DEAD FROG!!!!!!!!!!!!
@PrincipessaDellOpera but coffee shouldnt be.....boil i know i know lol
Wellard was the midshipmon that the caption bullied
Was Wellard the man with Red Hair?
i'd say hes annoyed his frenchy got shot in episode 4,english ginger has nothing on her!
I know the reason, but Horatio wearing one epaulette is so unsymmetrical and makes me feel all weird and OCD
brb gotta boil some coffe
Bush is quite the disciplinarian isn't he?
TheBType: You’ve got to be. Men need a good firm hand and proper training to deal with all of the perils of going to sea in a tiny wooden ship, no modernities, no comforts...As well as a lot of the menial crew ‘pressed’ into service against their will.
And I wants Williams' voice
@TO464
One epaulette only looks so strange...
I like Mr. prows(spelling?)
I reck'n Wolf's a bad'n
lol some mittens, she not even sew on some finger holes!!
I love 02:20... such rank & proper!
@Spontenaity It's England, the land where they ask, "how would you like your pizza boiled?".
@CatAtomic99 homeboy takes no prisoners
Now that's a woman.
He had a great a hot french girl in the 4 episode, Is this scag really the best he can do??? wtf
@qwertyuiop911 LOL *'Nyan cat' plays with me ROFL*
2:14 lol
Horatio could have done better.
I want hornblowers hat and I want it now
learn to cook or i cook you!
Lol your right :)
haha
