these big GPS-units are for the older guys like me: money to spend, kids are out of the house... but the eyesight.... don't forget your reading-glasses ;-)
Progressive lenses work great for this: when looking at the computer you naturally look down through the lower part of the lens, which has the correction for closer objects like that.
I still have my Wahoo element Bolt it has been used intensively for last 7 years, 12-16,000+ km every year, when it was new it lasted about 15 hours, after all these years of use it still holds 12 hours+ and works flawlessly ,great piece of kit
I upgraded to Bolt v2 and was extremely glad I did. A map display that is actually readable, color coded HR and power fields, on board navigation so if you veer off course it guildes you back sensibly, informative, color-coded elevation chart with a read-ahead even without a route loaded. My friend, though, has the original Bolt and does not see the need to upgrade, even given all this.
I'm ready for the ACE, right now! I have had a roam but the overall battery life was horrible. I used it multiple times a week but only got about 2 years out of it. It won't work at all now. I bought the garmin 1040. really hate it. touch screen is horrible when it rains and sucks with gloves too. Every time I touch it with my fingers, I'm getting a smudge or a smear on it. When it rains, every rain drop affects the screen -switching it to some other screen. Size of the ace screen is big and I don't really need it that big, but for a better battery and button control, I'm all in. I will buy this as soon as I can.
It's so hard to see in bright light, and I don't have particularly bad eyesight. Have always wished they would update it so that you can disable the ambient light sensor and allow you to max out the brightness at all times. I understand why they don't: battery life. Just wish they would give the user that choice as I'd gladly sacrifice a couple hours of battery to actually be able to see the display at all times.
@justinjewell1043 i don't have my wahoo near me right now but I'm pretty sure you can enable something like a alway background light mode within the wahoo elemnt app.
Most tri setups hide the computer between the arms, so TT might be the same (not in that scene). You would need a completely different setup to utilize the wind sensor.
the Ace model seems to be releaased by Wahoo on December 3rd. Got an email this morning around that showing the draft outlines of a bike computer and saying "Something Epic is coming"
I’ll definitely buy it, I already have every model they’ve made to date, the original Elemnt was so so and always had condensation behind the screen, but I like the simplicity of Wahoo, I’ve also got a Garmin 1000, way too many things to play around with, I’ve given it to my wife.
I upgraded from Bolt v2 to Garmin 840, but after a couple of months I realized it I like Wahoo's usability and data screens more. Garmin had features, things like a wind field, stamina prediction, navigation instructions that pop up with the map of the intersection and seconds remaining, but Wahoo's map screen with 4 data fields and an elevation chart just gave me data in a concentrated manner that I was unable to achieve on Garmin. So I sold the Garmin, and luckily I've kept the Bolt.
I'm 55 and have a harder time reading smaller text, so I went with the 1040 and now 1050 from Garmin so I can keep the same number of fields on my main display, but have a larger font. I was frustrated with the issues I've had with finding a mount that actually does work (some claim they do, but don't, at least with my S-Works Future Stem's front mount).
I'm 78 and downsized from a 1030 to an 840 when I discovered I could read the fonts in the 840's 10-window data screen just fine. I was surprised. I do wear glasses with progressive lenses (which are also transition, eliminating fussing with sunglasses).
Cycling is only expensive if we make it. Having said that I agree this new unit will match the 1050 price, or just below it. Regardless it is almost time to start putting my cellphones back on my handlebars.
I'd buy it in a heartbeat mainly for the aluminium mount *and if its back tab is made of aluminium too* - and even better if said back tab is replaceable. It still boggles my mind no major brand offers any option to replace the back tabs of their head units. I had a stupid crash just a couple months after getting my Elemnt Roam 2 and everything was ok - except its stupid weak back tab. Good luck if you want to replace it, and even more good luck if you can replace it without losing its "aero".
Couldn’t agree more! I actually have plumber’s teflon tape wrapped around the tab area since my Bolt V2 was getting wobbly. Now I’ve also added a touch of Loctite mounting putty to my Silca titanium mount. Ridiculous.
I may be alone in this sentiment, but I will be sad to see the side and top lights go away. Particularly the top set of lights as that is invaluable for a quick glance (with barely a movement of my head) to see if the Varia radar is detecting anything. I had Garmin for many years but have always liked Wahoo's implementation of the radar alerts better.
I exactly agree about the varia top lights. Key to quickly being alerted but will also add that I'm disappointed as the side lights show me instant power zone no matter what page on and side lights show if ahead or behind a segment. I'm gonna stick with roam 2 alone for these reasons
Realized I actually prefer non-touchscreen glass. Been using an Edge 840 and find that too often bumpy roads mean I hit the wrong spot on the screen. Also, finger grease all over the glass after a ride. And the fuss to get touchscreen-enabled full finger gloves, especially thick winter ones. Wish Wahoo had something like the MyBikeRadar special field that uses the Varia data feed to display (and record) the actual speed of vehicles approaching from behind, updating every second. Really useful to (a) pick out the crazy fast speeders and (b) tell if vehicles have noticed me (because they slow down). Sadly, it's not working well with the latest Garmin OS update. Looking for a ROAM on sale.
Would have been good to include a ROAM V2 overlayed on the ACE to show how much relatively larger it will be. Especially since many interested people own the ROAM.
Love my Bolt v2. I’d rather wahoo have done a slightly larger screen for the bolt but kept the case size 😊 maybe on v3 😊 I won’t buy this Ace version. Pete 🚴🏻👍
I agree with similar feelings for my V2 but I struggle to see the small screen with no glasses on when riding I so will consider an upgrade. But not at the price estimated here! No way.
I think Wahoo is going to price this below the Garmin, but not by much. I can't imagine them putting it out there at almost double the Roam V2. I don't think their customers are going to be willing to pay that much of a premium. But who knows? I have the Roam V2 and I would really appreciate a larger display. The other stuff is unimportant to me.
Bigger screen absolutely BUT not at the cost of a bigger unit. They need to be shrinking the bezels. The Wahoo doesn't look to bad in that regard. I'm excited to learn more about it. The Karoo was disappointing, the garmin 1050 to expensive if they can keep the price about £450-500 they might shift some units,
@@smccarthy1975 I still have my Wahoo element Bolt it has been used intensively for 7 years, 12-16,000+ km every year, when it was new it lasted about 15 hours, after all these years of use it still holds 12 hours+ and works flawlessly ,great piece of kit
I like Wahoo it’s really good kit, I went over to them due to a bad experience with a Garmin. I bought the original Element and never looked back, I’ve also had a bolt…I now have a Wahoo Rival watch (£100 direct from Wahoo) which does absolutely everything I want incredibly well, I really love it! 👍🏻 Would I pay 600 quid for an Ace?? I doubt it, I’ll probably won’t buy another bike computer again!…though if it was about 450 l might be tempted??😁
HI guys I have a sensor from polar/sennheiser that shows me my body temperature from an in-ear sensor. Is there any way to output/sync polar to a wahoo or Garmin bike computer?
Just bought the new Roam V2 after owning the original Roam for 10+ years I guess. Battery finally died. Anyhow I love it. SW is still so much more simple than Garmin and the Roam is super easy to use and Very readable. I wear glasses all the time thus have reading built into all my specs. Can read it fine. Not sure I would want anything bigger nor could care less about even more features. The Ace looks great for the folks enjoying gadgets at the next level but not racing anymore my days of attempting to be the most aero are over. Had spreadsheets and power vs speed with wind estimates and all when I was doing TT racing. The bell is nice but prefer to verbally say hello or good morning on the common paths. Another push button is silly I do wish Wahoo had a web interface for free with the computers but these days Strava and Ride with GPS do what I need. Ace looks awesome, rather save up for a new phone.
I would have loved this but had to “settle” for a 1040 non solar when they were on sale for the 1050 launch. Nothing wrong with it, just like wahoo’s LEDs on the face of the devices and their version of climb pro
just knowing wind speed and direction is good. just knowing the effect of drafting is good. It can't be an opposing force power meter and so cant combine power from a direct force power meter and calculate cda.
Looks good and am sure wahoo will make most intuitive and easy to use bike computer. But the price point if it is similar to Garmin ACE 1050, will not be interested to purchase, instead purchase new karoo which is relatively cost effective.
Wind sensor would be nice, but the ACE is probably too expensive and too big for me. I will stick to my Garmin 530 for a little longer. Btw, is there a bike computer that has a sensor for gradient? Not by air pressure and speed/distance, but with a real sensor?
I'm not sure the point of a wind sensor on a bike computer. Any cyclist can tell whether there's a tail wind, head wind or crosswind and how strong it is based purely on how sad they are. Strong headwind = very sad.
“Cycling is pretty expensive in 2024” well no, MARKETING wants you to believe that, but cycling using your existing equipment is still fine and free. You don't need the hype.
Yea, yet another device that is getting bigger. Like with phones when the normal version was as big as the XL version from some years ago. Wish they'd make a Bolt sized version of this.
Outrageous. Its like cell phones and tvs. When will it end. I don't think it's going to do great since a majority of the top money spending ppl are the weight weenies like my self. I'm perfect happy with the roam but would have loved the bolt. But I will absolutely not go bigger. I can definitely see this for the super long distance riders doing 150 plus Miles a day exploring the country side that aren't trying to race against the clock.
Wind sensor what for???? watts are watts no matter the wind is coming from, if you want to have a real power metric, get power meter(s) period. If you have head or tailwind while riding your wattage is gonna be recorded accordingly with your power meter(s). If you need to pedal harder or easier because of the wind direction, then your power meter is gonna register that. If you're buying a Bike Computer because of a wind sensor then we're getting crazy definitely
do we need big cycling computers? i would say the limit should be 4.5". i'm currently using a smartphone as one (6.2" display) using the cadence app and it's way too big even with the page filled to the brim with data fields. it just looks out of place on a narrow 36cm bar, almost like an aero extension.
The major issue is screen replacement - I dropped my Roam v2 at 3 weeks old and the screen glass smashed - screen replacement not available just 40% off a new one. Painful
Wahoo just announced 3 dec as availability (or at least as official announcement) Wind for power seems silly and useless. If someone is buying a 800€ on a cycling computer they probably already have a real power meter
Why on earth would I pay 600 plus quid for a computer? Remarkable how the cycling industry convinces people that their stuff is worth that kind of investment.
Good that there are alternatives. We bought a Magene C606 for 90 Euros and a Karoo 3 for 360 Euros in the last weeks. Both great devices. I have no idea how Magene manages to stuff all these features in that budget. So, no need for the 600+ devices if you don't want to spend that money.
At what point do these things get so large and so expensive that you just go full Froome and use a quad lock to put a phone on the bars and look like a dork?
@@roadcc 4 - 5 hundred any more and they'll be pricing themselves out', the k3 is a good unit (with faults) 1050 WAY too expensive - tho id have this Ace over the k3 (& Garmins) anyday!
why can’t an old iphone 13 mini be turned into a dedicated bike computer? better screen and more powerful than any of these computers and picked up super cheap.
I started out using a phone on the bar and hated it: (1) battery life was terrible, 2-3 hours (2) I have zero self control and would look at email and make phone calls while riding, really stupid (3) too much clutter on the bar (4) I use an iPhone 13 mini while riding but it stays in my back jersey pocket for emergency use
We don’t need them but there is a big market for high end cycling computers amongst the MAMIL group. As for the wind sensor - meh! I know when the wind is slowing me down.
I tried wahoo roam 2 , Garmin 1040 and 1050 . None of these are good as mobile phone for navigation . I cycled from Portugal to North Norway with wahoo roam 2 and it was first and last time I used bike computer. I had to make a new route every time the road was closed due to roadworks, an accident or the opening of the Olympics in Paris and it was so time-consuming that I chose the phone and navigated with google maps in the end. I bought used iPhone 13 mini for my next long bike ride trips . Yes I know the cons battery live and the overheating but I do not need screen on all the time .It would be nice if someone made a computer that could use Google Maps with live update.
Not really. It’s actually super useful to have a bell built into the computer. On my gravel bike I have aero bars so cannot fit a bell, plus I would rather use my voice to warn people I am coming than have an ugly bell on the bike. But if my bike computer had a bell it would be awesome as I dont need any extra mounts and it wouldn’t affect the aesthetics of the bike at all. I do understand for most people a bike computer not having a bell isnt a big deal. But for the more competitive athletes they tend not to have bells on their bike so this will fix that problem.
Bah, that's not remotely innovative enough for my taste. What we want (we just don't know it yet) is - A one-pane-of-glass information device - It shall be an aerodynamic windscreen that improves our drag coefficient - It shall have on-screen display of speed, power, heart rate, navigation, etc. - It shall have AI supported reality augmentation (e.g. scan other rider's chain/cassette and display what gear they're in) - It shall have a glycogen prediction engine (i.e. "carb battery indicator") - It shall have a whole app infrastructure ( so that I can live stream and share my view with my jealous friends or send inconsequential and purpose-less tweets while riding) -It shall have an entertainment library (listen to music, watch movies etc.) - optional: stretch this device from front to back of my bike (weather protection for the rider) - optional: add two more wheels to my bike, with additional seats for passengers and a combustion engine so that I don't have to pedal anymore Well, this escalated quickly, didn't it
Yeah another bike "GPS" that is totally useless when I am out somewhere then you know, want directions to somewhere else. Most cyclists should really just buy a beeline. Far better navigation that actually works as you would expect.

Wife: So it tells you when you're winning?
Me: What? No, a WIND sensor!
Wife: *eyeroll*
A speaker could be used to have a turn by turn navigation.
It could potentially make the workout analysis a lot better if the wind sensor can distinguish between breaking the wind vs drafting

the box says "Our most powerful bike computer" - that doesn't mean it is the most powerful bike computer.
Bigger is better!
Don’t need a wind sensor to make myself smaller
Why on earth would I pay 600 plus quid for a computer? Remarkable how the cycling industry convinces people that their stuff is worth that kind of investment.
Good that there are alternatives. We bought a Magene C606 for 90 Euros and a Karoo 3 for 360 Euros in the last weeks. Both great devices. I have no idea how Magene manages to stuff all these features in that budget. So, no need for the 600+ devices if you don't want to spend that money.
Shut up and take my money !!!
may as well throw the phone on the steam - XL bike computers are getting ridiculous
No more wahoo for me, happy with my 1040
30+ hours of battery 🤣yeah right!?!@!
I'm completly not interested in. I would appreciate a new device - something between Bolt 2 and Roam 2 in size, with better maps. Nothing more.
The wind setting detects if you had a curry last night 🤣
At what point do these things get so large and so expensive that you just go full Froome and use a quad lock to put a phone on the bars and look like a dork?
Loving my Hammerhead Karoo2
Bryton S800 offers 36h battery life already... just sayin'
Think ya wrong on the price
What do you reckon?
@@roadcc 4 - 5 hundred any more and they'll be pricing themselves out', the k3 is a good unit (with faults) 1050 WAY too expensive - tho id have this Ace over the k3 (& Garmins) anyday!
just use a tablet like Froome 🤣
Rumour has it, that is why the iPad mini was created
Yak. Like the computer small. Do not want to have a smartphonesque device on my handlebar. We stare enough on those suckers.
why can’t an old iphone 13 mini be turned into a dedicated bike computer? better screen and more powerful than any of these computers and picked up super cheap.
I started out using a phone on the bar and hated it:
(1) battery life was terrible, 2-3 hours
(2) I have zero self control and would look at email and make phone calls while riding, really stupid
(3) too much clutter on the bar
(4) I use an iPhone 13 mini while riding but it stays in my back jersey pocket for emergency use
Nobody needs a laptop at the bike. A roam with a bezel free display would be perfect
fawn over sub 6.8KG bike, install brick on handlebars.
Waste of space. Not needed or necessary.
We don’t need them but there is a big market for high end cycling computers amongst the MAMIL group.
As for the wind sensor - meh! I know when the wind is slowing me down.
Torta Grande
Probably will be popular with time trialists, triathletes.

A 10’ video to make money out of a single image without ‘anything’ confirmed
Thanks for the watch, subscribe for lots more bike content!
@@roadcc How sad, lol. Didn’t watch it tho, but there you have your ‘view’ and the comment.
A bell on a bike computer is SILLY.
May be some one needs it, but not me)
Lost me at 3.5 inch screen.
Bah, that's not remotely innovative enough for my taste. What we want (we just don't know it yet) is
- A one-pane-of-glass information device
- It shall be an aerodynamic windscreen that improves our drag coefficient
- It shall have on-screen display of speed, power, heart rate, navigation, etc.
- It shall have AI supported reality augmentation (e.g. scan other rider's chain/cassette and display what gear they're in)
- It shall have a glycogen prediction engine (i.e. "carb battery indicator")
- It shall have a whole app infrastructure ( so that I can live stream and share my view with my jealous friends or send inconsequential and purpose-less tweets while riding)
-It shall have an entertainment library (listen to music, watch movies etc.)
- optional: stretch this device from front to back of my bike (weather protection for the rider)
- optional: add two more wheels to my bike, with additional seats for passengers and a combustion engine so that I don't have to pedal anymore
Well, this escalated quickly, didn't it
Yeah another bike "GPS" that is totally useless when I am out somewhere then you know, want directions to somewhere else. Most cyclists should really just buy a beeline. Far better navigation that actually works as you would expect.
