Eh they give them enough of the catch to keep the healthy and strong, give them shelter, veterinary treatment, protect them from any natural predators and probably provide them with an increased chance to mate than in the wild considering the benefits of having more trained comorants to employ. There's probably a good amount of affection between fisherman and bird too much the same as with equestrians. That's a better deal than many nations working class humans get.

They had this on Ray Mears the other week. Fascinating how the birds and the humans have this relationship with each other and work together to get the fish. Trust the Beeb to call the birds "slaves!". Might have known!.

Very creative, eco-friendly and artistic way of fishing. I never thought my Chinese figurine of the fishing Chinese with ducks in his bamboo raft would have a story such this until my brother showed this to me.

@@aidanwoodford8195 they aren't slaves lol, they serve exactly the same as a hunting dog. Like dogs, they help humans catch prey and we reward them with food. They are men's best friend. And this is definitely more eco-friendly than fishing with nets because you can only catch a few fish a day. Its way more sustainable.

The dog usually gets something it wouldn’t have had gotten otherwise, the dog gets food in exchange for labor, the bird captures all the fish yet only gets a portion of it, what does the human give the bird in exchange?
The Child Of The Corn it’s not a fair share tho, the bird dos literally all the work, although you could argue the bird is given a safe nesting friend and protection from predators, as well as access to better fishing spots,
Dogs are just so friendly and social that they don't complain when they get the shorter end of the stick.

Not exactly, the animals usually get more out of that’s arrangement then they would otherwise, that’s the difference between a symbiotic relationship and a parasitic one, give and take, in the case of working animals they get more food then they would normally and protection from predators, in exchange for a portion of their food going to humans, similar to how an ox pecked gets free food and protection while the ox gets a parasite cleaning,

It seems Double-crested cormorants are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), so I’ll be unable to try this technique myself.

I'm no expert but I'm sure they are pets in the same sense that working dogs are used for hunting are still pets too.

Well, dogs actually have a will to serve their masters. These birds are just being stolen from.
Still, they seem to be okay with the ordeal. They do get fed, and are not mistreated, really.
They are given respect and protection.
The same can certainly not be said about chickens and ducks.
They are only protected until it's time for them to end up on the table.

Loved the one at the end - naughty cormorant. I far more prefer this relationship between fisherman and 'fisherbird' than the western one which is just for the former to kill the latter :), we can learn something from the guys in this vid.
I like this and I sure would like to try it but the bad thing about this is them picking them up by their necks and the knot in their neck I don't think they can swallow a fish that big

They are totally slaves. Except for the fact they receive better food, nutrition, shelter, and social interaction than all other birds. Also, they are not doomed to die a slow death which is common for 90 percent of animals
what are they gonna do, chase them in the water? these birds are better swimmers than they are. Its a good system. The birds are worked sure, but its no different than a hunting dog.
the birds probably are protected well and have a decent place to sleep, otherwise, they would probably just swim away. even if they cant fly. you noticed those dudes were just guys on rafts, not power boats.

Ok 6 years old comment but anyway - did you not notice the guys tied their necks so tight they can't swallow before they release them in the water? The birds die if they swim away. The reason they are staying is not because the guys protect them and shelter them but because they are enslaved. They'd do just fine on their own.

Correct! Besides, we can see that those birds aren't tied down or something. They are free to leave anytime, but they choose to live with their masters. In fact, it was said in the video that they will leave if their master if they are not being paid well. So I think they have a better life and a better job with benefits and privileges that I myself am not getting from my company. Haha
These cormorants are rewarded and trained....so they are pets.

Cormorants only catch adult fish. Nets capture both young and adult fishes that destroy fish population. Its kinda cruel for the cormorants but okay for a sustainable livelihood and the ecosystem.
It was certainly a good way to make a living. Unfortunately, it's mostly just for show, today.
Basically the birds do all the work.
This is where Chinese scholars thousands of years ago in service to Emperors thought of Capitalism and now the whole world of humanity is each one of these cormorants at some level. Including the bosses. lol.
