Ringing at Pershore Abbey

- Perhaps (no definitely!) the scariest place to ring in the world. Liverpool Cathedral is daunting, but this has nothing on Pershore Abbey. You ring from a platform suspended in the middle of the tower by four large oak beams. Surrounded by a "cage", you ring with your feet against the kickboard on the outer rim of the cage as there's not a lot of room! It's quite a drop... especially for someone with a bit of vertigo!
Lovely sounding bells, but I can't say I concentrated on what they're handling was like, too busy trying not to think about the drop behind me!
Filmed on NUSCR's advent tour 2011
Exactly. Arthur Berry used to say that this was the safest place to ring because you can actually see what is holding you up!
The bit where you climbed out onto the metal steps was stomach-churning! I'm not sure I would make it up there for a grab. Fine old bells though.
Gorgeous bells, would love to ring here and Merton!!
@arnoldusglocke It is rather amazing... the cage moves with the tower. The last time I rang here at Pershore, someone cried! There was enough time to go down the tower because on a ringing outing the group of ringers will have use of the bells for 45 minutes or maybe an hour, they will ring maybe 6 or 7 "touches" in that time.
Winner for scariest ringing room, but not for the scariest climb. That, in my opinion, goes to John's Lane Church, Dublin (23cwt in Db).
a few months ago I rang the bells in a bell tower with the plan of sound in rotten wood and crumbled a piece ... I would say that here is a luxury ihih :-)
there is also merton college oxford which is scary
It's exactly the same as being in a normal tower, high up in a ringing chamber. Plus, I challenge anybody to be able to actually make it to the other side of the fence!
Very exciting! Well, when climbing on a tower you generally must have no vertigo I think. But this here is amazing of course. Did they ring for a so long time that you could go up, down and outside during it?! *****
i proberly would not get through that tight squeeze has you are going up

Seeing this rather unusual ''Ringing Bridge' and 'see-through' iron stairway, I more than want to visit and ring there myself! If nothing else for this most unusual setup!
I wonder whose crankie idea it was to have a platform for ringing suspended on bits of wood nearly 100ft from the base of the church? Mad as a hatter. One of these days, that platform will collapse and send all the ringers to their deaths.
gosh nerve wreaking hate heights this is why i'm not an bell ringer hate heights & i'm not good at remembering stuff
