  • How to replace the solenoid in your gas or electric golf cart.
    When the solenoid fails, you will typically find that the golf cart won't start when you press the pedal or it may not stop when you release the pedal.

    I turned from run to the tow/maintenance switch when I moved my cart around in my garage so the electric hill brake wouldn’t engage. When I turned it back to run and with key switch on, I have a dead cart. It worked fine prior to this. Your help is appreciated.

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, assuming your batteries are charged and in good shape the logical place to start would be to check your run/tow switch and make sure it is working.

    My golf cart will work fine going somewhere, but when I come out and switch from reverse to forward it does nothing. I will tow it home and the next day it will work fine, I have replaced the mcor and the forward/reverse switch and still having the same problem. Do you think this is the solenoid? Thanks!

    • @ClintHolland

      Really doubtful if it works in forward. Do you hear it click when you press the accelerator in reverse like you do in forward when this issue is occurring?

      I have a similar issue as Shanna. Except now when we press the accelerator it does nothing. We hear the click but it won’t go forward or backwards. The reverse beep comes on but the cart does not move. At all.
      Does this sound like a solenoid to you? It’s a 2016 Club car. We just had a new motor and controller put in back in July of this year. We had it home from the shop less than a month and it stopped working suddenly.

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lhorne6186 I would suspect one of three things. A wiring issue, or something wrong with the new speed controller or the motor. Unlikely to be the motor but since you just had these replaced I would definitely check the wiring first. You could also work backwards and using a multimeter determine if power is even getting to the motor. If it isn't, then see if power is getting to the speed controller. Just keep working backwards from the motor if you have no idea where to start. If it were me, I would verify the wiring from the solenoid to the speed controller isn't damaged and then from there to the motor.

I wait a minute or two or press the peddle a bunch of times and or flip the forward/reverse switch back and forth...and finally the car will move and act normal until it just stops. Once it stops, you can press the accelerator again and go, but only for a few seconds, then does it again. It is an intermittent yet constant issue and is getting worse. It is probably not the solenoid but the easy way to check this is listen for the click. You may have to drive it around with the seat up to hear it but when the solenoid engages or dis-engages, it makes a pretty significant click.

    I have a question. My Ezgo txt….my old solenoid has what appears to be a jumper wire (black insulation) that is somewhat U shaped going from copper / large terminal to the other copper / large terminal. What is this wire for? It seems that it would cause some type of short. Just wondering what this jumper is for. Have you seen this before?

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is almost certainly a diode and not just a piece of wire.

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@billowens1439 I would as well. In simple terms a diode is like a one way valve for electrical current. Having one allows current to flow from the solenoid to your motor but not back from the motor to the solenoid. This can happen when the solenoid is switched off say by releasing your accelerator pedal and the current headed to the motor tries to flow back into the solenoid. The diode prevents that.

      I have a question that I have not seen below in comments. New solenoid, hear the click in it when pressing accelerator, reverse tone is there. No forward or reverse movement in cart at all. Run switch is on. Controller under protective cover looks to be a sealed unit, with no serviceable parts ( like a small computer with a couple of terminals and a couple of multi-wire plugs) Since new solenoid did not affect the cart movement, could this control box be bad? I know it can be a rather expensive purchase. (2015 EZGO txt fleet)
      Thoughts?

    Would this be the same for a bad boy buggy? I just bought one to try and flip. The lights turn on. When you turn the cart on it clicks twice, would this be a symptom of needing to replace a solenoid?

    • @larrym3186
      @larrym3186 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am assuming you are working on an electric bad boy. When EZ-GO bought out bad boy years ago, there was a batch of solenoids that were used in bad boy buggies that would click twice and nothing would happen but I have not seen that in years. Most times, it was the solenoid but it would be best to test the solenoid first. it could also be a bad connection somewhere, usually on the batteries or it could be a broken wire getting a partial connection.. Lights work off 12v and the car runs on 36v or 48v depending on the car, so the lights working don't tell you anything valuable. I am not one to throw parts at golf cars. When working on a golf car, unhook the wires on the positive terminal. You could use a zip tie to hold all the wires in a group so when you reconnect, you can be sure you did not forget a wire.. Sometimes, wires fall to the side and are not easily seen. Make sure you move the wires away from the battery terminal so they don't accidentally touch when you are working on the golf car.

The cart had power when I turned the key on but had no forward or reverse. I also reversed all the wires and still nothing. It seems to not be getting power. I was told

      Unfortunately no. The solenoid only controls the starting on gas golf carts. You likely have a fuel issue as that is the most common problem for rough running golf cart motors. Could be many other things but that is the first thing I would check.

      Chock the wheels and have the the accelerator depressed just a little bit. With a metal object short the two big terminals on the solenoid for a split second to by pass the solenoid. If you feel the motor engage you then know it's a bad solenoid.

    We are having the same issues with our cart. It’s running, but it struggles to take off and then also struggling to go up hills. What do you think it could be?

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That could be several things. The easiest and first thing to check is the batteries. As they get older they can't deliver the same amount of current as they could and your cart will lose acceleration and top end speed. It could also be the motor but that isn't likely. Also pretty rare but the pedal that you use for acceleration basically is just a large resistor and it can't cause this problem. My first suspect would be the batteries.

      It sure does. Pretty much all golf carts use solenoids and this is one of the most common faults in electric ones. Now for gas golf carts it can be solenoid or sometimes the starter if you aren't hearing the motor try to crank. Can be a bunch of other stuff too but the solenoid is a super common item to go bad.

      Not being able to charge your GC is almost certainly not related to the solenoid unless you have other issues. The solenoid doesn't come into play unless your ignition is on which it shouldn't be if you are charging it. What was the reason for replacing for your solenoid?

    • @larrym3186
      @larrym3186 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have worked on RXV's since the first one came out. I have not found the brake dust causing that problem. Normally the brake dust will cause the brake so it cannot release fully and you will smell brakes burning, as in a car.. there is no fix that I know of except replacing it but I really doubt that is your problem. I had some golf cars at a golf course doing that and it was a failing switch in the floorboard. Being off and on problem, it is going to be tough finding the culprit. I just found the faulty switches using an ohm meter. It took a while as it was intermittent. I am not saying that is your problem.. it would be hard to know without looking at it.

    • @larrym7780
      @larrym7780 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are 2 other things that came to mind that causes this. First, make sure you don't have your foot on the accelerator pedal when you turn the key on. If it is depressed at all, the car won't start until it is released. This is a safety feature. Second thing to look at, would be,vis the accelerator pedal sticking at all when it comes back up. The golf cars I work on are by the coast and the spring on the accelerator pedal gets rusty and hangs up, not letting the pedal return to the starting position. If that is the case, shine a flashlight do you can see the pedal inside the floor board and spray it with WD-40 or something similar. Then work the pedal up and down. Make sure the key is off, before doing this. I normally remove the key before doing this as a habit.

      It's pretty normal for that resistor to get really hot. If it only slows down going uphill I wouldn't suspect the brakes at all. 90% of the time that problem is the battery. I know you said they were new but check them first. Make sure they have water in them and check them with a battery tester against their rated capacity. If the voltage was measured between the controller's M- and B+ terminals, then you are measuring across the motor and the voltage would be Zero with pedal up and full battery pack voltage with pedal down.

    Would a bad solenoid cause the electronics to not turn on? My golf cart runs normally, but the touch screen, horn, headlights do not turn on

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. The solenoid only controls power to the motor. You may have a blown fuse or broken wire running to the accessories.

    EZGO doesn't move or have back up alarm. Run / tow beeps but when I plug in the charger it stops. Tried to bypass the charger switch wire but no difference.

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If that is the case, it is probably not the solenoid. The backup alarm should come on immediately upon switching to reverse even before you press the pedal and engage the solenoid. Did this just start happening all of a sudden?

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  ปีที่แล้ว

      In general, it doesn't matter as long as you connect the small wires to the small terminals and the large wires to the large terminals. Most solenoids aren't polarity sensitive.

      @@juangabrielreyes1376 Sorry about the delay. If the battery and alternator are good then something is draining the battery. Do you have any external accessories that might cause it like lights or a radio or anything? If not, you may want to use the current measuring feature of a multimeter and see how much current is being drawn when the cart isn't in use.

      @@juangabrielreyes1376 You need a multimeter to use the ammeter function on it. You may want to watch some videos on how to use a multimeter to check current but the basics are you need to see how much current is being drawn when the cart is just sitting around. If its more than a few milliamps you probably have something draining it. From there you will need to gradually disconnect things from the cart to see when the load goes away. It could be something as simple as a bad key switch.

    • @kylerkominos6462

      Sounds like the controller, which is unfortunately a lot more expensive. Since solenoids are fairly cheap, I would go ahead and get it replaced while you’re at it though

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  ปีที่แล้ว

      Doubtful. You would generally hear it click if it was the solenoid going out but they don't generally fail like you described. Almost certainly the speed controller or even something worse.

I have replaced the electric brake and I just installed brand new batteries batteries were showing they were weak thought it was causing my issues with the brake burning smell and the stalling not going please help still doing the same issue brake is getting hot or motor is getting hot one of the two or both thanks

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a tough one. For the brake burning smell, is the smell coming from under the cart near the wheels or from under the seat. That would let you know if it was the resistor or the brake motor. As for stalling that could be a ton of things from the motor to the speed controller to some burnt or damaged wiring. IMO, I would either take it in to a shop or look at buying one of the handheld meters that you can plug in and diagnose it. These RXVs are fairly complex when it comes to the electrical and speed control.

      I would check the wires on the batteries. If a wire is loose or breaks due to corrosion, it will sometimes make a popping sound and car will stop running. A pds car will start beeping and stop quickly. It could also be a bad battery.
