    My Much Older Brother loves old tractors and wind chimes. Well, he likes old women and suppertime just as much....but not necessarily in that order. Being 12 years my senior at 83, he is very much active in the operation and repair of tractors and equipment. He spends a lot of time with chainsaw in hand dropping trees and cutting firewood as well. He, like our Dad always says there's no rest for the wicked.... But on with the story. Having been a heavy equipment operator in excess of 60 years and with most of those years being on equipment with manual hydraulic controls, his hands have become 'oversized' and consequently he has a certain degree of difficulty in the manual dexterity department with the finer details of working on stuff....like bolts less than 3/4'' in diameter. LOL Not really, but he does have problems in spaces not big enough to get his oversized meat hooks into for small parts and pieces. So this morning I got a phone call that requested my presence to more easily facilitate the installation and adjustment of a set of high quality American made points and condensor into the confines of the distributor of this 301 John Deere.
    Now, I don't sit in the preachers pew on Sunday but I don't make a habit of excessive use of profanity unless it is necessary to make a point or to help get a job done. Well....If the Good Lord Above was listening today, he sure got his ears burnt by the discharge of a litany of language that granny would've used a whole bar of soap to sanitize my pie hole back in the day !! I can't remember a more difficult set of points to install in recent memory...maybe its just that I'm getting a bit old, and maybe my own dexterity is suffering a bit in the flexibility department....and maybe its just darn hard to get these parts and pieces all attached under the silliest little nut and bolt I've seen this side of a Swiss watch !! Never the less, I am no longer in contention for a seat on the good side of the Pearly Gates, because the foul nature of todays language has taken me out of the running !! No matter though because as the Much Older Brother so adroitly pointed out, I'll be in good company because he figures he will also be sent to the same place in the afterlife as me. And we are expecting it to be a bit warm....might even be sentenced to work on John Deeres for eternity. I can't think of anything worse.
    DISCLAIMER: Take the rant bove with a grain of salt....because the intention is totally to create a grin on at least one persons face that may read this. Well that, and to pick a little fun at our John Deere loving friends. And ourselves because we both know there is an easier way to do it, we just couldn't find it. Besides, we both have a pretty good number of the old Poppin' Johnnies from a 440 crawler with a Detroit 2 stroke to a 50, 70 and an LA for starters....and now a quasi-modern 301 !!

    Glad your able to work with your brother. My brother is a banker and doesnt get his hands dirty. Your brother looks to be in good shape. My dad calls me tonight and he took his motorcycle out for a 50mile spin. I dang near forgot he still had it. He hasn't rode in a couple years. Glad you were able to assemble the distributor Wendell. I understand your brother's problems.
    I myself am a bit big in the fingers and have difficulty getting down in those tiny spots to work on equipment. It has been an ongoing problem for several decades and I have discovered a great many tools to help me in doing that.
    I own a lot of tweezers and little tiny wrenches and nut drivers. Nut drivers are great things. Especially the right angle ones that have a little spinner on them so that you can reach in and tighten things up in places that you can't get your big fingers.
    Dental tools are the best.
    When I get in trouble is when I work far enough away from the tools that it feels like it might take longer to get the tools than to just do without.
    Almost always a mistake.
    I've made peace with the Lord. Lydia is a tougher case to get forgiveness from.
    She knows I'm better than I behave and knows free will is no excuse.
    I worked on the Ford and a John Deere yesterday. Oliver and family were down and Oliver drove his JD around the yard. I pulled the Ford out of the shed so he sat on that and turned the wheel. When we both were younger I added a seat for Ryan to ride on the Farmall B with me. Might need to look into one for the Ford.
    He went in the little barn and sat on the Troybilt.
    All in all a great day. BFHBA (big fun had by all).

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh heck yeah...a pair of hemostats have gotten me out of a bind many times. I never saw a right angle drive nut runner. That'd be cool. Sometimes working on stuff can be a pita. @@FromSteelToWood Joe, if you are asking me, I think the system I used on those was a kit made by 'Mallory'. These kits worked well though, I can assure you. I notice that the brand 'Pertronix' is available ( almost everywhere ) these days. This is the brand that apparently Wendell is using too. I'd certainly contact 'Tractorman44' for more info. I'm sure he'd help you

      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahahaha...been there and done that Dean....LOL. After a few I found out that the distributor pops off easily after removing the cap, leaving the drive components in place allowing you to change them on the bench and reinstall very easily. They only go back in one way and you don't have to mess with matching the drivegear or anything. Life was much easier after learning that.

      I think a lot of 'em do it on purpose. Now removing the backing plate works great....but on this one the machine thread mounting screw is tight towards the block making it easier to pull the distributor to do it.
