It was pretty impressive how James Cameron pulled this movie off in 9 months, despite the large scale production compared to the first film, and how the film was breaking new ground in special effects
For long over a decade, this movie was used to show off TVs and audio systems in stores for good reason.

With T2 and Aliens, James Cameron has proven himself to be able to elevate the material in a sequel. Here's to hoping Avatar 2 surprises us all, but my expectations are managed

Yeah. Arnie is a superstar and an amazingly accomplished human being, but he's no actor. Interestingly, I liked Dark Fate more than most people, and one reason for that is that I think Schwarzenegger gave a genuinely good performance in it. Understated, layered, funny, moving. The best acting of his career. Maybe the only good acting of his career.
I think it genuinely did suit him, I rewatched it a few months ago and I'm amazed at how easy it is to accept his character as being a robot, but also not be 100% sure if it's feeling or not throughout the movie. When I watch it, I feel more like I'm watching a robot modeled after Arnold than Arnold pretending to be a robot

There are some movies that are just special. T2 is one of those. Huge, epic, emotional, action packed. Industry changing.
The first time I saw T2 was at a drive in theater in Boise Idaho in 1991. I was 11 and my parents brought me.
I knew nothing about Terminator and I’ll never forget sitting in one of those plastic lawn chairs in the gravel, holding my little metal speaker, and seeing the first battle scene. I was in absolute awe. I remember everyone honking their horns and cheering when “Bad to the Bone” started to play.
An unforgettable summer night seeing a movie I was probably to young to see.
I wanted to see this in the theatre but I was too young. Fast forward a year. I had a birthday party to go to at a friends house when I was 11 or 12. My brother had rented this movie the night before. I snuck down to the basement to watch it after school the next day. As for the party, the prospect of chips, pop. and awkward dancing with girls was not enough to keep me from seeing the end of this movie.I was so late to the party. It was soooooo worth it.My mind was blown when I showed up at John's house. This and RoboCop are the movies that shaped me. Love them so much. I'll always get excited when they announce a new Terminator move,and always be upset, but... and I might be the only person who liked the Christan Bale one..but you're right...they should have ended it here. This is an amazing movie.
The use of twins is what completely blew me away.
So wait Cameron used the Twin trick twice in one movie? Talk about lucky casting.
One was luck, I'm sure the other one was on purpose.
I was ten years old when I saw this in theaters. I had a cool uncle. That opening battle was the coolest thing I had ever seen. The atomic scene gave me nightmares lol

The 30th anniversary is in July. I'd love to see it in theaters again. It never gets old on the big screen.
I saw it in 70mm twice at the Continental in Denver.
@@FaydOgolon I was too young in 1991 but I’ve seen it multiple times in recent years and it just takes on another level of greatness on the big screen.

I had completely forgotten about T2 3-D, but I saw it when it was a kid in the early 2000s and it was my first introduction to Terminator.
I love this movie! Everyone in it is so good, but especially Linda Hamilton. When I first saw it I thought she had been recast. What an amazing transformation!

Unlike some, I loved the Abyss, but when I saw T2 I was blown away.
Ironically, I watched Abyss for the 1st time a couple years ago via HBO, and was absolutely blown away! It shot up to my 3rd-fav Cameron film, behind Aliens and T2. In fact, I only watched the standard version, not the Tidal Wave edition....though I've heard what the extended cut involves, and can't see myself liking that extra stuff in what's already a pure, tense film of survival.
@@kingofthesharks I saw it in theaters when I was a teen, and only later stumbled on the extended version on DVD. Surprisingly enough, I liked the alternate ending better. I feel it carries a bit more weight without being too preachy.

@@kingofthesharks The extended cut is generally favored over the theatrical one b/c it ties all the subplots together.
@@jp3813 note taken. If I rewatch the film sometime it'll hopefully be the extended cut. Though I liked the Close Encounters vibe of the aliens so much already, without it being tied to international political events. So curious to see how it was executed since people favor it.
joe mortons performance is one of the most underrated in movie history. cast that role wrong and the whole movie falls apart
Recently saw it on the big screen for the first time and it really does hold up. It’ll always be one of the best action/sci-fi movies of all time.
They never were able to come up with a completely new, cooler Terminator after the T-1000. The only thing the later movies in the franchise could do was make a “new” Terminator that was an amalgam of the T-1000 (Robert Patrick) and the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger), or some kind of variation of the two. The T-1000 was the ultimate Terminator, imho.
They've done solid and liquid terminators. So maybe a gaseous one :P
At the universal studios terminator 4D show some years ago, there was this giant spider terminator that I thought was really cool. Unfortunately, they never seemed to have brought it to the movies.
It shouldn't have been that hard to make a new, cooler one for the new generation. The problem is they just kept trying to replicate the first two Terminators and failing.
@@PolarisCastillo All they had to do was think logically about what would happen in reality when Sarah and John get captured and questioned. Then the Feds would interview the hundred or so SWAT and cops that unloaded thousands of rounds into Arnold with no effect. Dr. Silberman witnessed some of the capabilities of the T1000.
There would be an abundance of evidence around something far beyond any weapons platform currently known. Then set up 2 non Arnold T800's and 1 T 1000 who remained on standby only to strike when the authorities have placed John in a vulnerable position. Just take the story from there.
@@PolarisCastillo it is because the artistic freedom is not there anymore. It’s just a completely different world now, it why most art is so poor now days.
My favorite thing about Dan is that he and are the same age, so I can relate to all the experiences he talks about. Not just the random, "only 90's kids will get this" kind of stuff but also the fact that he and I both must have had strict parents. Staying up on a school night to watch movies with my parents? Classic! I still remember staying up late to see Romeo + Juliet on the school night with my mom 😅
Also, I too, went to Universal Studios and saw the T2 experience 20 some-odd years after it was released, and I distinctly remember being disappointed that Nickelodeon studios had shut down already 🤦🏾♂️
The Idea of tht Terminater Salvation had a brutial feeling.
Theres lots of Sifi films of robotic merges with humans but I loveed when they had that guy walk to the base and magnates stuck to him and Bale asked "What Are You?"
One just have to wonder if people are working on reaniamtion never minding the ethics
Holy crap. Thanks for blowing my mind Dan. I've apparently only seen the extended version and had no idea those were originally cut scenes. I can't imagine the movie without them.
I used to rent this every couple of weeks when I was a kid. I had that T-1000 toy featured in that commercial with the butt weapon and I had a T-800 with half of his face missing and a detachable arm with a couple arm options. It was one of my favorite toys.
I saw this without having seen the giveaway trailer. The who is the hero reveal gave the movie a huge pulse of momentum.
Also, I have seen the Terminator 3D attraction at Universal Studios Japan.
This is filmmaking of the highest order. I saw T2 in 3D five years ago and it still looks absolutely incredible.
Contrast T2 with any of the other sequels, and you truly see what sets Cameron apart. He is a genius.
I love how Dan gives you the best insights from the movies that we love. I've seen tonnes of T2 Special Features but still learnt plenty from Dan. I was fortunate enough T2 on the big screen at the age of 10.

I love all your videos but this one stands out for me. I remember seeing this movie, I'm pretty sure on pay per view, in 1991 when my mom, who I never saw because she divorced my dad years earlier and remarried and moved overseas, visited the states and stayed in a hotel. That hotel had this movie as I'm sure everyone did via pay per view and we watched it together with my brother. I have to say that at the time a movie about a son being estranged from his mother hit home for me as I watched it with a mom I barely knew. I never even saw the first one first... this was my first terminator film experience frought with both the emotional experience of my family along with the real kid thrills you get watching a great action film when you're eleven years old. Great work as always sir!
16:12 One of the most underrated lines in the movie is "Get Down". If it weren't for the marketing at the time (or pop culture osmosis for years afterwards), this moment would've sent shockwaves through people's expectations....I have to imagine. I am envious of audiences who somehow did NOT get exposed to spoilers prior to seeing T2!
I saw it at a drive-in with my Dad…I was 12 or 13, and my recollection at the time is that it was pretty well-known that Arnold was the good guy in this one.
Maybe some other old-timers remember it differently, but that’s how I recollect it. I imagine it would have been pretty difficult to go into the theater blind.
@@keefriff99 yea marketing was evidently super blatant back then, even for me born in the 90s. Ironically the only group that can go in blind for this villain/hero twist is Gen-Z kids, whenever T1+T2 get on the front page of Netflix again, and they curiously check it out without knowing what we knew decades ago.
This movie might be the strongest movie from 20 or more years ago that still holds up

One of the things that I like about the story is that if John and the Terminator hadn't shown up at the mental institute, Sarah would have escaped on her own.
I used to have the silver dvd box set, and I spent countless hours watching the special features.
Thank you Dan for this wonderfull walktrough. When the T1000 assambled itself after being split in frozen state, that gave me nightmares as a kid :D I also still regard this as the greatest action movie. Its got alot of cool action, great actors, great effects (both special and practical) and alot of heart. Such a good movie
That's so funny, because I definitely remember John's voice cracking a few times in the film, now I know it was his puberty.
Loved this movie as a kid. I guess I was pretty fortunate because the only thing I saw before seeing the movie was the teaser trailer so I had no ideas that Arnold was the hero. So, for me, the reveal was an amazing surprise
I worked at an AMC theaters here in Allentown for the opening weekend of this. It was crazy! I also worked opening weekend for Batman 89 so I was prepared.
That Sunday ABC showing was my first time watching it as well. I vaguely remember talking about it at school the next day.

So apparently, I've only ever seen the extended version. I remember seeing the smile scene as a kid, and I loved it and it made the movie that much more memorable for me. haha

I too rank this as one of my favorite action movies. Still, I rank the first one just a notch better.
Each sequel after T2 has just been heartbreaking, I couldn't even make it all the way through Dark Fate.
For me ho love Tarkovski, Bergman, Rossellini, Fellini, Leone, Hitchcock, Copolla, Altman, Lumet, Kurusawa, Billy Wilder, Wiliam Willer, Wiliam Friedkin and so on T2 is for me in same league with Tarkovski Mirror, Hitchcock Vertigo, Wilder Sunset bulevard, The Apartment, Double indemnity, Some like it hot and so many others masterpices, T2 is best action sf movie by far and dont forget The Terminator is one of best sf horror movie ever
I was 5 when this movie came out. I had no idea there was a part 1. I thought the title was referencing there were 2 terminators in the movie. It wasn't until part 3 came out when I learned there was a part 1. Wild

I was at UCF when T2 closed, so I went the last week and rode it far too many times thanks to my annual pass haha. I actually snuck a pair of the glasses out with me, so I’ll always have a part of the ride 😭

That extended cut ends up being one of the best sci do movies ever, if not one of the best movies ever.
Update: I recently had my GF watch T1 & T2 back to back, and she had no knowledge of the plots beforehand. The T2 twist 100% worked! She totally thought Arnie was the returning villain in the first segment, while assuming Mr. Patrick was the next "Kyle Reese but less hot". Once the T800 shielded John from the T1000's shots, her face adorably flipped upside down in confusion...."Oh Shit? Oh Shit!!"
It was great! The film arguably works better nowadays, separated from all the TV ads/trailers, and considerably less prominent Arnold memes than in the 90s or 2000s.
I guess I was lucky to have seen T2 in 3D back in 2014. Sad it’s not around anymore.
I wonder what happened to that Terminator statue Dan poses in front of at the ride since the thing has been decommisioned. That would be pretty sweet to have in the cave.

I really miss seeing you dominate Movie Fights. I know you do the Schmodown, and I love it, but MF had a certain feel to it. I learned how to appreciate different types of movies from not only your arguments, but some of the more obscure or classic films you chose to represent. That said, big fan of this channel and All My Movies! We can hear you wax poetic about films without having Carlson or Spenny get your goat lol. Love the channel, glad you're still out there representing for all the cinephiles!

That's why I love watching these, I had no idea that the version of T2 I had been watching all this time was technically the extended cut lol. I do agree though that the movie works better with the extra material. T2 was also the first one in the franchise that I watched so I will admit I was surprised by the T-800 being the good guy.
Even though Brad Fidel's score for The Terminator was superior, T2 had an excellent and memorable score. One of my favourites!
So excited to watch this episode, sometimes the podcast needs visuals, so it's nice to pick and choose and go back and forth.

I don´t really remember the first time i watched this movie but i know i watched it every time i could catch it on tv because i liked it so much but also because i didn´t understand everything that was going on. I was too young to be watching it but loved it anyway.

Terminator 2 is the film I've seen the most in the theater, at least 15 times!
Recently I also watch it again when it was re-released in 3D.
It is probably my favorite James Cameron movie, next to Aliens.
Interestingly, both are sequels as good as or perhaps better than the originals.

I saw T2 first when I was a kid. I had heard of the Terminator, but wasn't allowed to see it. But after I watched the sequel on tv, I loved it and then was subsequently confused as to why Arnold was the bad guy when I finally watched the first one. 😂

About the 4K disc. I haven't actually seen it, but there are a lot reviews that say it has way too much DNR and that it looks unnatural.
Now that has been said about the recent LOTR 4K releases and I think those look pretty great. What's your opinion?

Agreed! Jurassic Park was more influential in fueling my love of movies, but I saw T2 at a drive-in with my Dad when I was 12, and it blew me away.
