Yes! I've seen so many bass for guitarist videos. It's about time someone made a video the other way around

i remember i tried playing the guitar in school, but the thin strings hurt my fingers so i gave it up and took bass instead. now im going back and starting it again haha

I had bought my first electric guitar at the beginning of the pandemic (I'm nowhere near as good as you 😁), but I wholeheartedly agree with you - picking up a different instrument from bass really helps to expand your creativity and approach with bass!
I've also gotten swept away with playing bass on synths, which had me also start learning keyboards (I had forgotten all of my keyboard lessons from university 😁), but I've been trying to expand my understanding of harmony with both guitar and keyboard simultaneously, starting with the basics. I've also been trying to sight read the melodies for jazz standards on guitar, then try to figure out the chords for comping, and then I'll eventually try to play 1-2 note accompaniment with the melody at the same time.
Plus, bass players can plug a guitar into an octave pedal and run it through their amp! 😂

Nice! Glad to hear you’re also noticing some benefits! There’s so much stuff to practice that it’s easy to get lost 😅

I took a mandatory intro to Music class in college where we were taught to play piano. The teacher tuned the assignments to each individual’s ability. She was excited when I told her I was in band for 8 years in school. My final was a difficult music piece that I had to play for her in person. It went well. I was so surprised what I was able to learn. I wish I had kept up with it after, but even more than that, I wish she had taught us how to play guitar. 🎸

I started on piano, moved to acoustic guitar, then electric guitar and then fell in love with the bass. Taking up drums will be the next thing because I think it will make me a better bass player. Having a basic knowledge of the other instruments you are around in a band is very helpful. It's also good to learn how to mix front of house because you begin to understand what they need from you as a musician. This was a great video and it makes me want to mess around with my electric guitar a little more. Bass will always be my main instrument though. Feel the bass love!

I bet the knowledge of piano helped a lot when transitioning to bass!

I played for years drums..but the blues bass lines lured me to playing the Bass for the last year...the plan is to learn guitar in the fall....for many of the reasons Ivan has noted in this video. By the way learning the bass has definitely help me to better anticipate song transitions, feeling more comfortable with improvisation and transcriptions

@@401Blues That's great! I imagine that having the foundation of playing drum really helped when playing bass! I'd like to properly learn drums at some point!

@@IvanBassist The real challenge with drums is 4 limb coordination with 16th notes at 120 bpm....and be in the pocket with the various rhythms....lol

I played bass for 20 years and nothing else. In the last 8 months I’m 100% in on becoming a guitar player. I’m sure this will be me a better bass player but I might now know because I don’t know when I’ll play it again 😂. I never used a pick until I got a guitar but I’m a lefty playing righty so it’s not as easy but it’s coming along.

i'm same as you. almost 20 years as a finger playing bassist. the hardest thing is realising my strumming is not up to the level of my fretting.

I started with orchestral percussion in 6th grade, then guitar, then bass. I haven't played any guitar in decades, but your video has me thinking of buying another guitar. Thanks, Ivan!

Oh! That’s cool! I remember watching the orchestral percussion players practicing like 3000 different instruments and etudes while I was doing my bachelors degree.
Yep. Maybe it’s time to grab the guitar again :)!

Cool video! I have very limited money, but a month or 2 back I found an old 3/4 size classical guitar at an antique shop for 10 dollars. I put new strings on it and it's been fun. I've noticed that fingerstyle comes easy for me for obvious reasons.

    • @IvanBassist
      @IvanBassist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

That’s great! at least you can play a few chords and some fingerstyle stuff on it!

Finally, someone has a similar position to me!
I started playing bass first back in high school. Prior to that, I was a clarinet player, and I did front ensemble in marching band, so I have some keyboard experience.
I was pretty on and off picking up guitar. It wasn't until maybe 2 year ago where I decided that I want to get more serious with learning guitar, particularly cuz songwriting is very difficult with just a bass in my experience. Like you, a lot of stuff transferred over, and also practicing guitar also made me a better bass player as well.
Right now, I'd some I'm 50/50 with bass and guitar in regards to play time. I also picked up drums, but I haven't touched them in a few months. Wanted to be a drummer at first, but there's something about bass that still hits different for me.

    Examples of successful bassists-as-guitarists:
Paul McCartney (The Beatles) -- was originally a guitarist, but initially played bass after Stuart Sutcliffe's 1961 departure.
Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones) -- originally began his career as a bassist in the Jeff Beck Group.
Mike Rutherford (Genesis) -- played some rhythm guitar during the Peter Gabriel era of Genesis, but took over on lead guitar full-time after Steve Hackett's 1977 exit, with sessioneer Daryl Stuermer assuming bass duties for the band's 1978 and later songs in concert.
Sting -- initially played six-string guitar on his 1985 debut solo album The Dream of the Blue Turtles, handing over primary bass duties to sessioneer Darryl Jones (who today plays bass for The Rolling Stones)

Great video! I've always been curious what the thought is about bass to guitar since I'm a guitarist that transitioned to bass. It was difficult for me to wrap my head around the bass primarily being a rhythm instrument in the mix. The natural inclination is to play complex lines that border on soloing.

Nice to see this kind of video. For me it was the opposite, started with the guitar and 'progressed' to bass. I noticed I use my pinky more now, when I play guitar. Keep on rockin' \m/
