    I’m at Beekeeper and I melt my wax I put it in a container inside boiling water so you don’t have any problems and you can keep it liquefied as long as you keep the water hot and I think that would be a lot safer for those out there, there’s no danger of burning or Fumes

      Hi Shari - Yes, it's a good way to do it, and I've used that method since recording this video actually. Thank you for your comments... (Apologies for the delay, I didn't get a notification!) How lovely you can use your own beeswax...! :)

    This is the best explanation about materials for encaustic media I’ve seen. I’m starting with it so I’m a little scared of over heating the wax (for the fumes) so your video is very helpful, thanks! I’m totally looking for those courses online :)

    Can you use just plain beeswax?

    • @JulieAnnWaxArtist
      @JulieAnnWaxArtist  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can paint in the same way, however it won't be as durable as beeswax with resin added to it, and would scratch or scuff more easily.

    Beeswax is not toxic, as it is a natural product that the bees make! It is food safe, but yes you don’t want to melt Beeswax in a container you are going to prepare food in or intend to prepare food in future.

    • @JulieAnnWaxArtist
      @JulieAnnWaxArtist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right the beeswax itself isn't toxic, it's the added pigments and resin that you don't want to be consuming, hence good practice not to mix painting and food containers... :)

      Hi Christine, You're very welcome! To clean, heat your brushes, and wipe in tissue, repeat until clean, you can also use soy wax to clean them... it's a great question, I'll put it on a list for future blog posts! :) I also have a new hot off the press free resource you might find useful... If I heat wax and resin indirectly, in a waterbath, i. e. a pot nested in a (water containing) second pot, would I get the resin sufficiantly heated? I use this successfully for candlemaking, with recycled candles. It even worked, when I took the pot from the stove! Keep up the good work! :-)

    • @JulieAnnWaxArtist
      @JulieAnnWaxArtist  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comments... I'm not sure about the temperature of this method for heating resin, as I haven't tried it myself. Damar has a melting point of around 80 degrees celcius, as opposed to beeswax at around 62c ... you can only give it a try, do let us know how you get on! :)

    I have been pouring beeswax into antique chocolate molds. I would like to paint them but I’m having trouble with acrylic paint sticking. I can paint, but later on after the paint is dry it will rub off quite easily. Would I be better off painting with oil paints or would I be better off spraying my beeswax statue with a sealer prior to painting .

    • @JulieAnnWaxArtist
      @JulieAnnWaxArtist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Acrylic and beeswax don't mix... Oil paints would, but there are rules around it, I have an online course that can help depending how deep you want to go, or I'm doing 1-1 Zoom calls at the moment. Look at the Frequently Asked Questions on my website for more info... www.artyheaven.com

    Hi Julie, I'm just getting started with encaustic wax, I ordered beeswax online and had a problem with the wax that wouldn't spread across the board before it dried, I thought I may have taken delivery of a wax that already had damar in it and I had mixed 8-1damar when I received it, if this wasn't my problem of too much damar then I'm wondering if I would be able to paint a wider width if I used cold wax, but don't know if you can use cold wax with hot wax, perhaps you would be good enough to explain if you can mix the two together. I also would like to know of the best crayons to use for painting flowers in detail with the hot wax technique, many thanks

    • @JulieAnnWaxArtist
      @JulieAnnWaxArtist  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jean, I've not encountered this before, so difficult to say just on a few words. If it does have too much damar in, I would suggest adding additional plain beeswax to get the proportions back to where they should be. Damar only raises the melting point, so once molten, in theory, shouldn't have anything to do with how it spreads, (it cools, not dries) so wondering if your wax isn't hot enough, that's why it's not spreading. Don't recommend mixing cold and hot wax together. Where are you based? I'd really recommend some tuition to get you started, or a good book, or tutorial, it will help you no end. I'm working on some, will post in the link when live! :)

      Thank you for your reply. Do you have a website detailing the supplies you hold? Also, please could you advise me what you think would be best for me to start with. I have seen videos of artists using an electric frying pan and a table-top griddle/grill. I can't afford anything too expensive and I wonder which of the two would be better. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and I look forward to watching more of your videos. Also, I think, in your video, that you said you teach classes in encaustics. Do you have any information on those? Kind regards, Diane.

    • @JulieAnnWaxArtist
      @JulieAnnWaxArtist  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Diane, I am in the process of merging two websites, my old website is www.julieannsgallery.co.uk my new one is www.artyheaven.com - (I will update the link here, once everything is live.) I have lists and prices of everything on my old website, the formatting is a bit strange, so you'll have to bear with me on that, but you can order those products now, just e-mail me your order. My new site will have shopping cart functionality on it, I'm still in the testing and uploading products stage, so it's not quite live as yet. I have most products in stock, if not, I can order in for you.
      In answer to your heat tool question... Personally, I would go for a table top griddle / grill, you have more flexibility in that you can use it directly as a palate, or put tins on and melt individual colours, although it depends how large a scale you want to work, a small griddle will be fine for small to medium sized work.
      Finally, you'll see workshop information on my Julie Anns Gallery website under the 'Encaustic Wax' tab, you'll see pages for workshops, online workshops, FAQ's etc. At the moment, I don't have studio space, (and we are doing major house renovations) so not planning any workshops until probably Spring next year, so focusing on Online Courses for now. I hope that's helpful.
      Drop me an e-mail at julie@julieannsgallery.co.uk if you would like to go on my mailing list to hear as all of this unfolds...!
