    Welcome back to ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com. Today we're getting flattened with the CP-1X compressor, from Boss. Every pedal in Boss's line that ends in X uses proprietary Multi-Dimensional Proccessing that involves complex signal routing and control assignment. Boss has taken the concept of multiband compression out of the studio and onto your pedalboard, complete with gain reduction LED metering. Multiband compression divides your input signal into several bands, with each band getting its own compression settings. Because the CP-1X is a multiband compressor, the MDP algorithm analyzes your signal in real time and converts the compression to match the dynamics and tone of the input signal for a truly expressive compression experience. The CP-1X converts the nine-volt power internally to 18 volts for a high-headroom compression effect that won't flub out when fed beefier signals such as active pickups, red-hot humbuckers or even dirt pedals. Even when fed the hottest of tones, the CP-1X has an extremely low noise floor, and no amount of gain or signal strength will budge it. The CP-1X's four controls are working overtime under the hood and controlling multiple aspects of the internal processor to deliver the most musical and transparent compression algorithm around. And like all Boss pedals, the CP-1X is built for the road and includes a five-year warranty.

    I’ve had a bunch of compressor pedals over the years, including the highly regarded Origin Cali76. The CP-1X is the best compressor pedal on the market in my opinion. It can do everything from subtle to squashed with minimal noise, and doesn’t alter your EQ. Boss killed it with this one. Great demo, Andy!

      Ben Brunskill thanks man. i ended up keeping my cp1x and getting the sp for a second compressor on the board. cp1x is 100% transparent and precise, good for tightening up hard rock/metal tones or precise cleans. sp is great all around, spongy, loses some lows, very musical.. but yes it is noisy, for anyone reading this, don't believe the guys that say it isnt. cp1x is very quiet even cranked.

    please don't hate me guys, but I really don't know what a compressor does.

    • @jamiebonapar
      @jamiebonapar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      A few ways to think about it, The easiest is this. when you play there are LOUD parts and quiet parts. So, you play a note, the attack (the initial pick strike) is loud and then it tails off and the sustain or decay is determined by how hard you hit it, the pickups, ect...So, you get quick loud then some 'sustain' then it tails off. A compressor, does just that, it 'compresses" the signal, from the top down, thus making the loud parts quiet. Doing that, makes the loudest part more closely in volume to the sustaining part.....Ok, so, long winded, but what does this mean, well now, when you hit a note the loud part which was pre-compresser say a volume of 10 is now a volume of 6 (cause it was 'compressed') while the sustained part of the note, which was a 5 precompressor is still now a 5, since it wasn't loud enough to trigger the compressor (this is a setting on compressors). So, there is only a difference in volume of 1 between your note pick and sustain. (I am just using an arbitrary volume description). Then, the compressor can boost your total note volume since now, you arn't as loud. THink, before the compressor kicked it, if you boosted the gain or volume, you would still have a big discrepancy between note and sustain and bossing would make the pick or 'attack' of the note REALLY loud and annoying. But now, you cam boost both and get a nice volume increase without causing trouble. This is why compressors can increase the sustain of a note, cause you are boosting the quiet part that pre-compressor, disapeared....
      That is just one example, the other is that it can smooth out your playing so there are less volume spikes and things are more even volume wise.
      Things can get more complicated when you start talkoing about attack time, that is the time it takes for the compressor to click on, so you can preserve the attack of your pick if you set a late attack time...

    • @BluesLicks101
      @BluesLicks101 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uh, NO David Lee - that is an incorrect explanation: A standard (non-banded) COMPRESSOR has NO intrinsic frequency sensitivity that causes it to have all frequencies at same level, what it actually DOES is it takes the complex input signal (i.e.: all frequencies) and compresses the AMPLITUDE of the WHOLE of the signal to a reduced dynamic range.

    • @jupjuck
      @jupjuck 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      it narrows the dynamic range, and reshapes the attack / decay sustain characteristics, changing tone without eq
      a good example is mark knopflers sultans of swing.

      Don't worry no one else does either! People buy them though! I've watched hundreds of videos and I still can't hear the difference. I have one on my Mustang III Amp and it makes everything louder.

      lance ong as Dan from TheGigRig says, it's an overdrive for your clean tone - meaning, all the things you like about playing with overdrive : increased sustain, even tone, ease under the fingers happens to your clean sound with a compressor. All overdrives and more so with distortion, have a compression. Cranked tube amps compress, etc etc... it really just makes it easier to play, and though it lessens dynamics, it does so musically and a way that works with a band/live mix

    • @ProGuitarShopDemos
      @ProGuitarShopDemos  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No, it would not affect tone but rather sustain, attack and volume of your signal. If you don't see any lights on the reduction meter, it could mean the threshold of the compressor is not being met. Try it first in your signal chain, since an overdrive with a low output setting, for instance, might not reach the threshold. This is all assuming you're talking about a new pedal and not something that was abused or powered incorrectly.
