I could not believe it was Jimin at first, coming from previous songs, where his voice was solid, loud & manly to this whispery gentle feminine voice.
But after watching his Vlive explaining why he wrote the song, from the depths of darkness (they were talking about disbanding, how he felt alone and lonely during those times, and how he used to beat himself up for making mistakes) he became enlightened so he promises himself that he should be in his own compass (you* should be your* own light) and not be hurt, don't smile, be dishonest (with how he is feeling - he usually tells people he's OK when he's not), lost, suicidal (going further away**, blow your mind**) or feel alone (you* can be your* own night, it's ok), i understand why the song has to be sung in such a breathy gentle voice. It was like being suffocated by all the negative mental & emotional turmoils, he felt he was lost in the labyrinth of darkness within, he could only sing as if his breath was cut off by an invisible noose.
It's a brilliant song espousing how Jimin finally found himself embracing his own dark experiences and breathing a solid light unto himself. Night is himself. Light is him too. Eventually, he found himself again. That's why the song became a gift to himself and to all who had suffered darkness to the depths of depression, and suicidal thoughts like himself.
*you/your was actually written as i/mine but Namjoon wanted the message to be sampled by everyone who ever felt like that so based on his advice, the pronouns were changed.
**for Jimin, he found himself that way cos he could not confide in his members at that time as they were also going thru those tough times. I think the contract negotiation nearly broke their friendships too. Not sure whether it's true, but i heard Bang PD did a good thing as the boss then. He told them to get their own lawyers to negotiate what they want with BH lawyers. And their parents sat in all the discussions too. If true, i salute Bang PD for being a fair boss. If not true, it's ok, it's a good rumour!
Anyway, learning from Jimin, i promise myself a lot of things, and for the past year, finding it so much easier to live within my own dreams, wishes & expectations. And step-by-step, i become my own light while embracing my darkness/life challenges.
