Dad says he doesn't model words beyond their standard meanings, and maybe he hadn't before, at least not knowingly, but in any case, he just did here! So even if it was an accidental press (Dad has said that's what laid back ears usually means), I wouldn't be surprised if Todd keeps using it in this way, especially since it made Dad laugh.
He scent marked your legs with a body rubbed against them just before you left the room. Showing his possession (love) for you in response to your leaving for work. Probably a way to make sure you really did come home in the evening. The next step after saying your leaving smelled.
The "ownership" thing is kind of a misconception. Cats are social animals, so when they scent mark another cat, they build a mutual scent that becomes a "family" scent. When they do the same to you, they're claiming you as family. It's mutual, it's not just about putting their scent on you, but also about putting your scent on them, so that you have a combined scent. They are claiming you, not as property, but as family or as their accepted social group member. And they wouldn't do that if they didn't like you at least a little!
Not that everyone will care about the distinction, but to say that something stinks or smells isn't "swearing." It can be seen as complaining, griping, describing, but it's not swearing. Someone wrote that his ears were back, and I didn't go back and watch again for that, but if so, then it was an oops anyway, as Todd always puts his ears back in displeasure when he presses a button that he didn't mean to. That is what Todd's person has told us through past months.
I am not one of those people who thinks cats cannot communicate. I believe they very much can and I have been very impressed with Todd and Billi (RIP) and what they've accomplished. However, it looks to me that he stepped right next to the button and a bean might have accidentally brushed it. That's just what it looks like to me. I do not have any doubts of Todd's ability to communicate and I fully admit that I have no idea how sensitive those buttons are.
@@MajesticalHonky There are a couple old video clips where Todd "clips" the button with a back foot but if you look at his behavior (non verbal ear and body language) it is intentional. He is mimicking Dad's use of hands and feet when using buttons.
@@happygardener28 I am a new viewer to Todd so have not seen him "clip" buttons before with his back feet. Thank you for that information. What I've loved seeing in Billi and Todd is their desire to communicate with their humans. Todd seems quite excited to do so.
@MajesticalHonky welcome to the channel. Several of the videos were shared around four months ago. Yes, some pets are very happy to learn to communicate in human words. Others, like Glamor, are unwilling to translate their thoughts into buttons.
I mean, there's a reason humans use bad smell metaphors. As far as I know, every language has some expression related to stink. The sense of smell is very emotionally evocative, and for somebody with a sense of smell much keener than ours, it's probably an even more natural connection to make.
Hate to say it, but what a stinker! I agree, he isn't hitting buttons accidentally. I think we would be shocked just how much these little guys understand. They may not know how our human culture "works" in certain ways, but it is kinda scary how sharp cats and dogs are... and all the implications that come with that thought.
My cat pays careful attention when I talk to him, and shows a clear understanding of certain words. He probably knows more words than he reacts to, but I don't know which ones or how deep his understanding goes because the obvious reactions are attached to words that he has a strong positive association with. Really would love to get him a set of the buttons, because I think he'd pick up on it quickly.
Yeah, the instant reaction is the clincher for me. He’s so deliberative most of the time. A response that speedy feels equivalent to raising his voice!
What ever idiot said animals have no souls must be out of their minds..Todd has more soul than some humans Ive met and intelligence too❤ Thanks for the giggles Todd and Dad you never fail to brighten even my darkest days❤
I'm not convinced that he used it to express displeasure. It seems like "No" would have been a much easier way to express that. Personally, I'd be on the lookout for an odd smell in the house. That being said, I died laughing when he did it.
Hmmm... Interesting observation. With litter, it makes sense. It's the place you poop. And I've seen cats use litter to mean trash, too, without having been taught that by their humans. Litter to cats seems to be able to be thought of as "thing you get rid of" which considering they bury their droppings works. So maybe it could be a cat swear or some way of expressing anger that's not as intense as "mad." I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed/irritated. Smell = that stinks? I mean, that's what humans say, too. I think we'd have to consider what they're smelling a little bit when they smell things, and learn how cats feel about things they smell to be sure. At the moment, I'd hypothesize cats are getting trained "smell" on things they think are very stinky because humans want to make sure their friends with super sensitive noses are actually smelling it. So are humans teaching cats smell on super stinky items so that the cat only associates it with bad smell? Or do we not really understand how cats feel about what they smell? Anyway, I think your observations are good. I'm not sure if I'd categorize them as cat swears so much as cat gripes. "That stinks. That's garbage." Cat negative commentary? Maybe it's just that Todd is so debonair in his little tuxedo and gazes at you so lovingly that I have hard time thinking of him as a potty mouth. :)
Interesting considerations. I guess it’s also possible that Dad farted a little when he did all those leg button presses 😅 Joking aside, who are those swearing cats? I must’ve missed that.
My first thought was he wanted to smell you before you left, but he could have been going for "smell ya later" but didn't finish his thought because your laughter let him know you understood the joke
Clever Todd, he never ceases to amaze me. Do you plan on teaching him "stink" in order to differentiate it from "smell?" It'd be hilarious if you taught him "poop." I bet that would become his favorite swear word! 😂😂😂
My guess is you have your “go to work smell” on, instead of your “stay home” smell. Or even different laundry detergent? But it’s much funnier to think he’s swearing 😹
Yes! Haden, that's it. His go to work clothes smell of work. Perhaps Todd says he knows Dad's going, as you indicated, and clothes smell proves him correct. Very good.
This was my first thought too. He just didn't have a way to say it before, until he got the new smell button. Another thought was, maybe since he got the new buttons home, work and smell all at the same time, he associates them all together and thought he should press it. Like, Dad was pressing work and home, and Todd was like, hey you forgot this other new button, remember? Even though I'm pretty sure he understood the word smell before getting the button, this could still be true. Another thought was, maybe Dad had inadvertently taught him the other use of smell just by Todd overhearing him say things like "well that stinks" when something went wrong. In any case, he just modeled it that way now, so I wouldn't be surprised if Todd keeps using it that way, especially since it made Dad laugh.
Yes, he meant it smells that you are going to work especially as you told home last night you’re home. He will soon understand the distinctions about when you’re packing for a work trip as opposed to a day away at work. You told him when you would be home (tonight). That’s got to be better than the uncertainty of not knowing. When you leave on a trip you will be ‘working tonight’ and more work days away. He won’t like any of the work away time, clearly, but he will have a better understanding and communication on how long you will be away! That should be helpful! Sorry Todd! 🥹
"I will smell you, while you are not around"... Our memory and smell detection are very closely connected, even though our noses now does not work as they used to thousands of years ago. Funny funny because birds talk on that level capable of full meaning regarding important issues. And Todd hugged your leg as you laughed hard making stand that he is involved in the conversation cats are said to be highly intelligent 🥸🤩🥰
Do you use cologne or a different aftershave or more of it? Besides, dogs tell when their owner should be home by checking the decreasing smell. I would not be surprised when cats could use the same method-dad smell low, dad will come back soon ;-)
I would have to see more instances of this to accept it as intentional. However, like you said, I've seen examples of other pets doing something similar, so who knows??
It might be you smell like 'Work', like work clothes, cologne, tools, might be a distict aroma to Todd that they are all together when you say you are leaving for work? Only time/Todd will tell!
Todd may soon reach to Ruby the Parrot's level of swearing, haha. It'd be funny if he were to combo together words to make his own swearing: "No noise" or "smell tail". Not that I'd encourage it of course, but knowing Todd anything is possible with that smart cookie.
Oh no! Dad is going to work again! "This STINKS!"
was about 2 post the same thing

Cats are social animals, so when they scent mark another cat, they build a mutual scent that becomes a "family" scent. When they do the same to you, they're claiming you as family. Yep especially combined with the ears back I think he's using his own meaning with smell lol
Usually, ears back means it was an oops, as Todd's person has said, as that indicates that Todd is displeased with his pressing error.

@@cacatr4495 I forgot about that, but yes, it very well could've been an error, especially considering it was a new button for him.

They totally could. Koko used a modified form of sign language, and so did her "brother."
