    Sometimes I feel very hardened to the beauty and emotional power of a film but I really cannot remember being so affected by a film. Just so utterly beautiful in every which way.

    This should be a mandatory watch for screenwriters in how to effectively create a genuine connection with characters. A story that from afar has been told many times, but man: when that ending comes, every poignant moment and detail that seems small builds into such a gut-punch of an emotional conclusion. I was gobsmacked by the power of that ending. Brilliant movie.

    A great film, without recommendation from UK critics, I would never have heard of it where I am in the far east. There is meaning and emotion in every scene without much dialogue. The ending I will remember for a long time.

    Possibly my favourite film of all time, competing with Terence Davies’ Of Time And The City.
    Every single shot in this film exudes a quality that other films have only hoped for.
    The story is perfectly told and speaks an absolute truth about love and compassion.
    It really is perfect.

      Not to take anything away from the story and writing, it was brilliant, but the film was so well shot and the cinematography was so amazing that I could honestly watch this movie on mute, it was simply so aesthetically pleasing

      There's an equally poignant Spanish film "Summer 1993" from a few years ago that's not dissimilar to to the "Quiet Girl" in terms of its themes and emotional impact. Its definitely worth seeking out if you've not seen it already.

    Great review of just a stunning film. Anyone know what is the name of the French cinema poet Mark refers to? (Am going to butcher the spelling: something like Celine Charmant?). Want to look him/her up and learn more about him/her.

      Celine Sciamma, french director of films like 'Portrait of a lady on fire' or 'Petite Maman', which is the film that (I guess) Mark had in mind by mentioning her.

      Thank you JordiTV79, for the response! It’s funny - Petite Maman has already come up with friends in discussing Quiet Girl. I just hadn’t known/committed to memory who the director was (of PM). Have watched a few interviews with the director of QG - amazing it is his first feature film. Now I will learn more about Celine, so thank you again.

    It's heartwarming, it's heartbreaking, it's meaningful, but it never surprises you. You read the synopsis: "a neglected girl from a large family is sent to live with distant family over the summer, while her parents take care of their latest baby", and you know exactly what's going to happen. You can take that beginning of that story arc and plot it's course right to the end in your head without missing a beat along the way. It's a no doubt a very good film, but it's one that I'd watched through in my head 90 minutes before the credits rolled.

    • @speedtrls
      @speedtrls ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes true, it does play as you expect but the film is cheeky, the way it is shot (Cait in the long grass for example) and the subtlety in the script - the farm and its dangers, the well - moviegoers will probably expect a dramatic turn here or there but it doesn't happen. It isn't needed. The comedy of the neighbor spilling the most dramatic moment of the film. It is just a special treat.

    • @sophiecalder-jones6630
      @sophiecalder-jones6630 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that's kind of the point. It isn't a big dramatic film and it doesn't need to be. The ending feels completely inevitable, but that makes it even more poignant somehow. You know what's going to happen, but it still breaks you

      That's why it's great, the plot is simple. There are no dramatic surprises.Yet It is a magical movie.
      The play with light and shadows while journeying in the back of a car or placing the biscuit on the table are nuggets of cinematic gold.
      The magic is real, because there are no tricks, no misdirection, it can only be real magic.

    The film is not that good.
    Because we read the subs, we ourselves create the perfection of the delivery.
    Anyone who has read the book will have to say, it's not that good. It could have done a lot of things much better.
    But again, I think this is the same thing! It will never be as good as what we saw when reading that lovely, poem of a little book.

    "Иисус Христос неизменен: Он Тот же вчера, сегодня и вовеки. Иисус сказал: - Я есть путь, истина и жизнь. Никто не приходит к Отцу, как только через Меня. Я - дверь: кто входит через Меня, тот будет спасен. Здесь, на земле, у нас нет родины, и мы ожидаем будущего города. Наша же родина на небесах, и оттуда мы ожидаем Спасителя Иисуса Христа. (Флп 3:20) Будем через Иисуса постоянно приносить Богу жертву хвалы и благодарения, исходящую из уст, которые исповедуют Его имя.Благодарите Бога Отца, Который сделал вас достойными получить часть в наследии святых в Его Свете." This movie is massively overrated , it's cold , shot like a documentary and I know it was designed to be just that but please don't say it's a masterpiece because it's not , the girl has three expression during the whole movie she is not a great actress she is just ok but no one is saying it because she is a child , the best acting in the movie was by the older women and the girls father they were very convincing, the story itself is nothing new nothing special , if you lie a movie with has a similar lost childhood tone to this watch Babyteeth

      To me, it wasn't the overall story or the cinematography (although beautiful imo) that elevated this movie, but the quiet (no pun intented) way it showed how to show love and affection to a child. Not with grandiose words or long speeches about love, but through everyday acts of kindness... it was so beautiful. I guess it's not to everyone's taste though.
