When Does 'You do You' Go Too Far??? What's the difference between individualism and bad fashion?

- Each time a man puts on the kilt, he is making a bold fashion choice.
And so it will be until every man in the USA has a kilt in his closet. We each honor the ancient traditions of the kilt and Highland Dress a little differently. While you can easily go "traditional" and have a reliable timeless wardrobe, it would be a shame not to do a little personalization. Otherwise, you're just mindlessly putting on a uniform.
At the far other end of the spectrum are those gents who use the kilt as a mere starting point for a totally modern fashion look. Is it possible to be too individualistic? Do you risk missing out on something more meaningful? Or becoming a laughing stock?

I agree with Eric, context is critical. Know the rules and make what you're wearing fit the occasion but still be you. It's what we do with our mundane "English" wear.
I have to say, I do love the look of the patches on your metal kilt. I tend to wear the Verillas 'modern' kilts with the mixed tartan and canvas to concerts. I may have to make myself a patch panel or something that I can hang from the kilt, and transfer between the various colours that I like to wear...

I have a question also, my wife sucker punched me with this question and it's thrown me into studying fashion, loom operation Scottish culture (even more deeply) and Japanese culture.
I'll quote her question for you "if Scotland has clans and Japan has clans what the hell would a Scottish samurai tartan look like?" Seriously if I don't get your sagely wisdom on this I'm gonna end up in an asylum.

There are several examples of Hanten jackets (and vests) in tartan fabrics....
I hear, you do you all the time. The problem is so many people take that to heart to such a degree that Some people ignore certain traditions of dress surrounding the kilt that dictate how things should be worn if you were not the wife of a chief or a chief or achieved in. Beard where they wear the sash, very large feathers in their tam giving the misleading suggestion that they may be an armagure. I think for the most part you do use perfectly fine. But when it comes to standard of dress and tradition that start to get into the arena of privilege and status, we should be a little more cautious and respectful there. The last thing you wanna do is give somebody the opinion that you have the privilege to dress in such away aware and accoutrement that historically you do not.
Can you guys do a video on Pelham's Maxims, like translating them to today's language and explain how they relate to highland wear and men's fashion in general?

If someone's vocabulary includes the word 'kilting', they're probably starting to look ridiculous.
I go for traditional and understated. King C3 and The Duke of Argyll are good example.
I wish I had more interesting questions to stoke thought, but these guys have answered so many questions over the years I mean is it really anything left unasked?!

To know the rules before you break them is required. This is because, and so, you can break them stylishly and appropriately. Then you can break them historically and personally.
For instance, I stem from Irish, Norse, and Scots stock, and apparently English and Welsh too. So a few substitutions? A dagged doubled brat (asymmetric cloak) instead a modern plaid (with those a useless affectation in any event); annular brooches; "viking" boots; dirk (?), seax (?), or shortsword (?); houndstooth, herringbone; Merovingian buckles?
Would 2 weathered/ancient tartans together (say, wee kilt and cloak) be so bad if the colors, patterns, and size were complementary?
When are you going to do a show on those goth club styles?
Please go over proscribed tartan again. I found a guy who wanted the Maine tartan, he never heard of private tartans.
