Legit thought this was a horror film, but turned out really wholesome and bittersweet. All these feelings in just less than 1 minute... this short deserved the award...
It just goes to show that all of the forced smiles we tell ourselves we need in order to face the world are meaningless. It's the people we love who make this all worth it.
On a job from which I recently retired, as I would ride in on the bus each morning, I'd pass a telephone pole a couple of blocks from the entrance to the building with two red circular reflectors, and mouth-shaped tape under them placed on the pole. It was often the last smiling face I'd see over the next eight hours. That gives you an idea of how happy a workplace that was.
This literally happened to me. In 2018 I found out somebody I knew had passed on. I wasn't a good person back then but for some reason they believed in me. So I stumbled out to a store to do some grocery shopping and I kept seeing smiles in the oddest of places. This is when I decided to turn my life around. If this person believed in me so strongly I had my own shoes to fill. Thanks Karly.
Funny thing: last night, I included the word _pareidolia_ in a reply to someone's comment on a different video, then, this morning, this (present) video is in my recommendations. Seemingly, 'the algorithm' reads our replies to other people's comments!
@@mendelovitchwhat you're describing, that emotional blunting, sounds exactly like anhedonia. Its a symptom of depression, not necessarily a side effect of antidepressants. It can be tricky because most antidepressants take weeks to have their full effect, but that's probably a sign you need to dial in the dose/medication type with doctor.
Muy lindo! Su metraje invita a mirar con otros ojos los objetos que pueblan nuestra cotidianidad y, de manera my especial, a quienes tenemos en nuestra vida, que es lo que más importa y nos mueve a continuar.
What a beautiful and wrenching story. Wow. I found this by total chance and watched because of the faces, and they sucked me into the storyline just long enough to hit me with a hammer to the chest. Brilliant work. Keep at what you do, because you've got that spark that sets you apart from the rest.
Oh, I haven't noticed for the first time: the alarm had also smile. Great work! I was looking for inspiration for my first short and I've found this. Keep up and all the best!
In the first seconds I tought: "Why was this chosen for a Filmfestival." This is because it has some clichés like waking up because of an alarm. This is used so many times, that these are tiebreakers for filmfestivals to not take it. But the story and massage for sure did it.
Yes, I agree, you know Roberta Marie Munroe in her book: How Not to Make a Short Film, points it out twice in the things judges hate. But in this case it was unavoidable, especially if the alarm clock is also a face. ☺️ Thanks for your comment!
Its amazing how in the beggining i was laughing bc i do the same and crying in the last seconds. Amazing short. Its wonderful how it transmits the emotions. Amazing job, hope you keep doing things like this
Saludos desde Panamá. ¡me re-encantó! si me lo permites lo usaré tanto en mis clases de psicología como de lenguaje corporal.... excelente manejo de storytelling
That's probably of one the best short-films in my life. The fact that it connects to a lot of people personally is what I admire about it. Amazing work mate❤👏👏👏
I remember as a kid probably around 5-7 years old I'd see faces something like how this video shows them but also it was like if I was seated in just the right angle and right perception I'd see faces to that would actually talk to me, weird I know. I think there's a term for it called metamorphosis, where if perceived at a right angle random objects make out a picture. I don't know why I remember this stuff something I seen trigger memories i forgot I had, but I remember these faces telling me things just I can't remember good enough to remember what it told me, just that I remember it happened. Always wondered if anyone had this sort of thing happen to them.
@@carlosarfilm if you ever need music for any upcoming projects, I would love to work with you. Been going through a cinematic phase lately, and my songs "Slow Lights" and "Air Flower" can make a scene exponentially more dramatic!
She may not be dead, he just may not have custody. Once she grows up he may even get to re-connect. At least that is how it seems to happen in the U.S.
Wow... every single component about this video is a masterpiece woven together. You truly shined bright with this work, with Jan Valerie's brilliant analysis as the cherry to top it all off. This video also strongly resonated with me on a personal level. As someone with borderline schizophrenia and manic episodes I had been experiencing this phenomenon of pareidolia all my life but have just now become aware of the term. My pareidolia became much more severe as of late and just yesterday I was on the phone with a client and I kept asking if they happen to work for us because he shared the first name and ethnicity as one of our employees. Only after hanging up did I realize how crazy I must have sounded, and now the timing of me coming across this very video just a day after, as if angels really are looking out for me. Or simple things like a certain song suddenly coming on, the traffic lights changing on cue, counting the exact number of clips used in my personal project and attributing it to divine intervention, and the thing is no matter whether these signals are true or not I still latch and cling onto them because it gives me relief and joy in that moment. It's no different than taking a drug. But the thing with drugs is it's only temporary. The slippers, the sink, the trousers, the coffee, the egg, I know so very well why the man smiled, and why that smile faded away. Even the subtle "Hm.. I don't know" head shake at 0:26 reminded me of my own personal criterion for accepting signals or not, to me it is at roughly 70% and any signals that are too weak to break this threshold I then discard as random data. To him the trousers were likely random data. I too am yearning for my daughter, perhaps the only true signal amidst all this noise. To me, that daughter is dance. I have a complex history and relationship with dance, but I truly love it and I truly miss it. This video was a signal for me to not give up and go find my daughter and cherish her the way she deserves. To make up for the 10 years I have not danced. Thank you so very much for producing and sharing this work. Sometimes films can have an unexpected profound impact on a viewer and I believe your work has accomplished this. I am 72% certain someone is tracking my watch history and comments and reading this one even now. But I don't blame them or resent them for the tracking, because I know what I did to deserve it and I apologize. It was not my intention but I apologize.

The music makes all the difference I think.
It just goes to show that all of the forced smiles we tell ourselves we need in order to face the world are meaningless. It's the people we love who make this all worth it.

Oh I was gonna say kinda the opposite, I think being smiled AT sorta makes you feel a bit better

In only 1 minute this short film makes me feel funny and smiling and then crying. This is a masterpiece!.
Lol I'm on antidepressants. My only emotion is vague nihilist melancholy and I'm unable to cry.
Thank you for your comment ☺️!
Hope you can get through that! Best wishes!

could be explored even further I think, but this already gives me chill! awesome work!
Yes I think that analyzing and deconstructing pareidolia as a theme would be enough for a whole narrative line. Thank you for your comment. ☺
You'd need a much more complex plot. This was a perfect length for what it conveyed.

One of the things I discovered in South East Asia as a respectful visitor is that there are many smiles, but only one is true...

The first 5 seconds I was like: "Oh no, another amateur short opening on an alarm clock!" but that was actually very lovely
Smart too. It looks like a face.

I like to mix my pareidolia with synesthesia so the music makes all the smiley faces have different colours.
