I feel like I got lucky 1st time I tried musky fishing at a local lake I landed a 50” with no leader on a old st croix rod from the 90,s, second time I tried musky fishing I landed a 40,1/4” pike. Both the biggest fish I have ever landed. Haven’t tried for musky again but hopefully my streak continues!

James Doran I'm from MN too. I never got one but sooooo many close calls. Literally tossing a gram silver spoon across the whole Mississippi width, get it 4 ft from shore and then the 5 ft muskie hits.......scares the bejeebus out of me, yanking the spoon away from this trophy fish and promptly hooking myself in the back of the calf muscle...all from shore. Wasn't boat worthy.
The rods we use are Assault Sticks by Chaos Tackle in a lot of this footage. I use a 9' SWAT (XH) for throwing blades, light topwaters, etc. I also have a 9' Shock and Awe (XXH) for throwing heavier baits like Medusas, Posseidons, etc. Both of the reels I use are the Abu Garcia Revo Toro S. I have one that has a size 50 spool and another that has a size 60. I use the size 50 spool reel for pulling blades, topwaters, etc. I use the size 60 spool reel for jerkbaits or anything where I might need faster line pick up. The size 60 spool allows for faster line pick up per crank when reeling over the size 50. However, its easier to pull blades with the size 50 spool since there's less line pick up. Overall, I have no complaints about these reels. I run them hard and they've treated me really well. Hope this helps!! Thanks for the comment man! - Ross
My cousin misjudged a musky. He ended up with a great amount of stitches in his arm for his carelessness of the fishes mouth location. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE PIKE A D MUSKY. Keep an eye on their mouth un regard to your location.
how hard would it be to go from all bass fishing to muskie? ive always wanted to try muskie. i live in vermont. but not sure how pheesable it is in my location? i only have a cheap fishing kayak for a boat
Well bigger rods and bigger reels would be the most important switch up. We use Chaos Tackle Assault Stick rods that sell for around $180-190 dollars depending on the size you get. The reels that I use are the Revo Toro S from Abu Garcia. They sell for about $250. But you can start with even cheaper reels just to get going and try some things out. You're gonna to want to run around 80lb test for line. So it would involve a different set up than bass, but I'd highly recommend it if you want to make the jump to muskys. Its an awesome sport, but I guarantee these fish will test your patience. haha. But it'd be an insane rush out of a Kayak. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions let me know.
