I loved this whole video and especially dug the idea of an "event machine." You're really teaching an old nerd new tricks!! Keep up the incredible work, Marcus

Thanks Amar! I just returned home from my trip. Got some videos almost ready to go up. The Bakers Dozen was a joy to listen to while traveling. What a run!

Very interesting stuff. Do you talk about keys or modes at all with the players? Or do they just eventually "find" each other?

Wow. That's very interesting, the concept of events and the way you use it. It has been instrumental for me as well in last several years, although in a slightly different meaning (for me, an event is something specifically occuring at a certain time, kind of a non-verbal message - think of the sound of a distant train that 'tells' you that you should walk off the rails - rather than a fixed mood, mode or theme... although both meanings come pretty close when you're doing music for a stage performance, for example). What is in common, that it doesn't have to be 'non-idiomatic' - it can be a metal riff, which would sound surprising and really 'telling something' as opposed to its conventional usage in a metal context, where it barely carries anything but the convention itself... and at the same time it eschews the perils of post-modernistic style juggling. The greatest thing is, you actually teach that! So good for your students.

Thanks so much serpent swyrls! Interesting points. I think it's beneficial to perceive all kinds of music and sound equally. You have more to work with. But, a greater creative challenge to make it all work!
I'm listening through the videos on your channel. Are you performing in them? Really digging the free improv stuff!

Thanks for your appreciation! Yes, everything in my "gigs" playlist is with my participation (I'm the bass player). And in "Music Videos" there is the only official music video for Sect of Phoenix (so far), that's a bit more on the extreme side, but particularly rooted in the idea of events, so you may find it worth checking out!

Awesome stuff man! Listening through "Sine Seawave - Twin 2 [LIVE Vovne Fest]" as I make breakfast. I'm getting Massacre (Bill Laswell / Fred Frith / Charles Hayward) vibes.

Thanks man! That is a flattering comparison! Never thought about such parallel before - I've always felt more of Masada influence on that tune - but yeah, probably it's also there!

Thanks for another fantastic lesson Marcus!
Are there any games you suggest to play using Event Lists?

Oh man - so many! I mean, event lists themselves are pretty much like a game. Try some stuff with cue cards. Write one event on each card. You can come up with some rules with that. Shuffle the cards and hand a few out to each player. Everyone plays to the card in front of them. Move on the the next card when you want. Event Lists Games - should I really do a video on that?
