You don't need to find gold to match the currency.
Rather, the price of gold has to rise to match the quantity of currency.
That being said, a whole lot of people ply their trade with rent seeking occupations (banking, financing) that is based on the fiat money system. The last thing they want is for it to end and private, no middleman, peer to peer currency system to emerge.

People need to watch the interview at DAVOS of the Thai Central banker who explains the pitfalls of CBDC. Thailand has been actively testing CBDC for some years and his comments were very interesting. The reactions of the French Central Bank and the EU Bank was extremely surprising to his valid concerns.

It can be programmed to only be usable for certain purchases. So you want to buy something say at the grocery store but you are over your carbon limit no purchase for you. Say you want to build a deck well you got a bad social credit score so you can only buy 4 2x4s a year. How about wanting to go see a concert but the government doesn't like the artist? 2: A programmable currency gives governments more options than you realise. For example, they may force consumer spending by time limiting your currency (that is money will disappear if you don’t spend it within a set time period).
Canada does not have CBDC (yet).
