I was at Bonneville Speed Week 200/300 MPH Club awards in 2006, one of the new record holders was Joe Fontana, age 82, who set a new 256 mph speed record in an ancient 270 GMC inline 6 powered streamliner. His exit speed at the 5-mile marker was 262 mph. I'll admit I was unsure the wisdom of letting an 82 year old drive 260+ mph - but then when I thought about it, Joe had been coming to Bonneville for 43 years chasing his record. It was obviously his life long passion.

I’m guessing but I think his ebrake handle is setup to deploy his parachutes. In his talk with Kyle, he said something was wrong before he deployed the chute

I say without a cage they are still at least 100% safer than your average vehicle. And no I'm not advocating for not using a cage. I would never go that fast without a cage. But I am saying that these newer cars are designed to be able to withstand much higher speed crashes, due to their higher speed capabilities. That being said, having excessive safety equipment isn't always going to save you either. Plenty of people have died at that speed, with promod cages Hans devices, five-point harnesses, and all the other safety equipment that everybody says gives you the best chance. My point is, while it is very unsafe to not have a cage, it is Leaps and Bounds safer still, then the same situation with a 90s Honda say

I think any car and I mean any car that is going over 200 mph on a drag strip with very little shut down needs to have at least one parachute. With the amount of money they're putting into these to make them fast they can at least do something to make them safe.

Last year at Commerce dragway in Ga during Street car takeover #1 we saw this guy who was roll racing his Lambo and at 1000 feet lost control of the car and slid through the trap completely sideways. The board clocked him at 165mph. He kept it off the wall. And he made the next round. One of the most amazing and unbelievable things I've ever seen at the drag strip. Guess this guy wasn't as fortunate. Damn. Glad the guy walked away.
The great coverage guys but the saddest part about it all is this track will be closed after this year Houston will no longer have a drag strip that's a quarter mile long the only thing we'll have left is HMP Someone please build us a new drag strip

The AWD VW is still my favorite feature on the channel also. I remember the first time we saw it and he went over how he built it, drives it, etc. It's just amazing and I'm glad he still runs and it's still getting faster and faster.
That shut down is way to short for this kind of event and this is hella sketchy for all these big hp/mph cars. Kinda crazy to me the track owners wouldn’t invest in a longer shutdown for the safety and reliability for the drivers rather than tearing their cars up in the sand pit and having to slam on brakes.
@@webb4252 At 1320 feet, sure, especially with Nhra cars with triple shutes. At 1500ft and most of these cars having one Shute, if that, not ideal. That 180ft makes a lot more of a difference than you think.
because they are scared gtrs can make power easily and these coyote variant mustangs can get down in the 7s with stock sealed engine. no heads no cams no pistons no rods. boost and fuel you make 1200whp with that or the gt500 and the class says a minimum of 4000lbs. gt500 weighs 4100 mustang gt and a Nissan gtr weigh about 3800 lbs but you are allowed 200lbs of ballast plus cage etc mustangs and gtr are heavy weight. gt500 weighs the same as a hellcat or demon but can run 8.3 full interior on factory dct but yet a 100k demon with 100k of mods and only basically the chassis left from factory can only run mid 8s. its so easy to make a mustang and gtr fast and there are so many fast mustangs and gtrs ots like population control that isnt right just because these heavy cars are fast. But yet the guy that runs the even has a hard on for supras so you can have basically a heavy caged 2jz supra making 2000hp in the event. Difference is all these cars like supras gtrs hellcats even some lambos cost so much to buy and build that people get scared because you can buy a mustang gt or even a coyote f150 which weighs 4500lbs for 30k and throw 30k at it run as low as 7s mustang gt or 8s f150 reliably 8s and 9s with stock internals. gtr is more expensive but still easy to make power. build a coyote and they then are capable of 2500+hp. point is they are heavy but they are fast. gtr is super capable and mustang is as well. while dodge was doing these high hp hellcats ford was able to make the gt500 that weighs the same costs the same as a hellcat redeye. not only faster than the redeye in a straight line but able to brake and turn to where that heavyweight gets around most tracks in the same time or faster than cars like the Ferrari f8 tributo huracan evo and Porsche gt3rs. GtR and gt500 can do both which adds we8ght but somehow they aint allowed

His hand was resting on it then he yanked it and then all hell broke loose, but going back he had chutes pop out so I can only assume that the handbrake is only a chute activation lever now. At 15:06 the other guy grabs what looks like a more traditional chute deploy lever but I guess it just didn't work?

yeah, i like the "still a street car" idea a lot, but parachutes should be a req over 200.
Parachutes ARE mandatory at 150mph and you need two of them at 200mph.

The AWD VW is still my favorite feature on the channel also. I remember the first time we saw it and he went over how he built it, drives it, etc. It's just amazing and I'm glad he still runs and it's still getting faster and faster.

That shut down is way to short for this kind of event and this is hella sketchy for all these big hp/mph cars. Kinda crazy to me the track owners wouldn’t invest in a longer shutdown for the safety and reliability for the drivers rather than tearing their cars up in the sand pit and having to slam on brakes.
crazy to me that people are contempt with 200+ mph with no parachute. at that speed 2 are required per nhra books, so why dont they run it??

It's an NHRA track so the runoff is plenty long enough.

@@webb4252 At 1320 feet, sure, especially with Nhra cars with triple shutes. At 1500ft and most of these cars having one Shute, if that, not ideal. That 180ft makes a lot more of a difference than you think.

i lost respect for tx2k for some of there rules like especially banning gtr and mustangs from the heavyweight class. thats nuts
Why they ban them ?
because they are scared gtrs can make power easily and these coyote variant mustangs can get down in the 7s with stock sealed engine. no heads no cams no pistons no rods. boost and fuel you make 1200whp with that or the gt500 and the class says a minimum of 4000lbs. gt500 weighs 4100 mustang gt and a Nissan gtr weigh about 3800 lbs but you are allowed 200lbs of ballast plus cage etc mustangs and gtr are heavy weight. gt500 weighs the same as a hellcat or demon but can run 8.3 full interior on factory dct but yet a 100k demon with 100k of mods and only basically the chassis left from factory can only run mid 8s. its so easy to make a mustang and gtr fast and there are so many fast mustangs and gtrs ots like population control that isnt right just because these heavy cars are fast. But yet the guy that runs the even has a hard on for supras so you can have basically a heavy caged 2jz supra making 2000hp in the event. Difference is all these cars like supras gtrs hellcats even some lambos cost so much to buy and build that people get scared because you can buy a mustang gt or even a coyote f150 which weighs 4500lbs for 30k and throw 30k at it run as low as 7s mustang gt or 8s f150 reliably 8s and 9s with stock internals. gtr is more expensive but still easy to make power. build a coyote and they then are capable of 2500+hp. point is they are heavy but they are fast. gtr is super capable and mustang is as well. while dodge was doing these high hp hellcats ford was able to make the gt500 that weighs the same costs the same as a hellcat redeye. not only faster than the redeye in a straight line but able to brake and turn to where that heavyweight gets around most tracks in the same time or faster than cars like the Ferrari f8 tributo huracan evo and Porsche gt3rs. GtR and gt500 can do both which adds we8ght but somehow they aint allowed

14:50, is this guy's handbrake been converted to a lever for his parachute? His hand was resting on it then he yanked it and then all hell broke loose, but going back he had chutes pop out so I can only assume that the handbrake is only a chute activation lever now. At 15:06 the other guy grabs what looks like a more traditional chute deploy lever but I guess it just didn't work?
