- King Sisavang Vatthana was the last King of the Kingdom of Laos since the establishment of the Kingdom of Lan Xang (Land of a Million Elephants) by King Fa Ngum in 1353. His Majesty King Sisavang Vatthana ruled from 1959 after his father's death until he was forced by the Communist Pathet Lao to abdicate the throne in 1975. The King was "the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people."
In the 13th century, Laos was a part of the larger Indo-Khmer civilization. By the middle of the 14th century, Laos became independent and took the name Lan Xang which mean, "Kingdom of a Million Elephants." Lan Xang lasted about 350 years and is heralded as the "golden age" of Laos. But the government eventually succumbed to both internal and external pressures and split into three separate kingdoms: Luang Prabang, Vientiane, and Champassak. Thus weakened, Laos came under the control of French in the late 1800"s. By 1949, however, the the Kingdom of Laos had become an independent state within the French union. And, by 1953, Laos gained full independent from France.
In accordance with the 1972 peace accord, the Royal Lao government and the Communist Pathet Lao were each granted territorial rights, military power, and voice in the government. Since 1975, however, the otherwise quiet, little country of Laos has been overpowered, and to the outside world its doors have clanged tightly shut. And yet, although the doors are closed, Laos is a country whose unique character and rich folklore will keep its national heritage alive. The people of Laos are unique. The many individual tribes such as the Low land Lao, Black, Red, White Thai, Khmu, Hmong, Yao, and many others distinguished usually by colorful dress - make up one of the most striking features of the Lao population (Jewell Reinhart Coburn,1981). The Hmong people want to express their heartfelt thanks to the late NBC News reporter Ted Yates and his colleagues, Robert Rogers, Julian Townsend and others, for this historical documentary of the Vietnam War. All rights belong to NBC News and their respective owners.

Well, when I was in Laos some years ago I went to visit Royal Palace in Luang Prabang and there was a photograph of King with his family and it said they were sent to a communist camp for "reeducation", after the takeover by the communistic forces, but since none of them received any medical help, they all "perished" within a year of being sent there. As I am originally from communistic Czechoslovakia, I totally understand how something like this happened. All countries with communistic government are suffering specific malady: they are told one thing, but all around them they see reality which is totally different than what they are told. And than they are kept in the country, so they can't see how things can be different!

there were over 100 tribes or different kind of laotian even though they didn't speak the same language but they were all consider laotian. The king and Souvanna Phouma were the ones who "demoted" general Vang Pao and brought in the Communist crooks, so I understand where some Hmong people are coming from.
Actually, the Royal Lao Army did not fight very well against the Communist but fought quite well against each others in the capital just to keep its generals in power.

Both of my grandpas served in the Royal Lao Army and the Royal Lao Air Force. I myself now serve in the United States Air Force. Oddly enough with the same command who tried to help liberate Laos from communism. I'm an American now but my brethren did not die in vain.

Rather, the US was merely protecting its vital interests by using Laos as the battleground to keep the commies at bay. Did you know it was Souvanna Phouma and the king who let the Communist crooks in? They forced the Royal Lao army to disarmed and General Vang Pao was demoted.

He was also the King of the Hmong in Laos and Vang Pao/Thouby Lyfoung/other Hmong leaders had the highest respect for him because he showed them the highest respect. Most people who are knowledgeable on Southeast Asia know Laos is run by Vietnam. Lao people don't deny it and don't like it. The Pathet Lao lost in 1975 in the same way the Royal Lao lost. The Pathet Lao were backstabbed by the Northern Viets. That's why Cai Son Nguyens statue is all over Laos and there is not one statute of Souphanouvong who started the Pathet Lao. Lao, Lue, Taidam, Mien, Khmu, Karen, etc all suffered just as much as the Hmong post 1975 in Laos and in Thailand.

To keep things brief, Communism was forced on Laos via the Lao Royals. The Prince of Laos, Souphanouvong, also known as the Red Prince was a Communist. His brother, the prime minster, was a Commie sympathizer.
These 2 were the culprit that gave away Laos to the Communist. Some Lao people say they were tricked by the Communists, but whatever the reason, these 2 were the root cause that led to the Communist take over of Laos.
Why am I telling you all this? Throughout the long and turbulent history of Laos, it's always been the Monarchy that have caused Laos to fall to foreign invaders.
When Laos lost our land to the Siamese(Thai) in 1700s it was because the Lao Royals were fighting each other and sided with the Siamese.
Two centuries later, you see the same shit repeating again. The Lao Royals fighting each other and sided with the Viet Congs, which created all the mess you see in Laos today.
This is why, in my opinion, Laos should NEVER go back to Monarchy. Let it stay in the past. Lao people should not put anyone on a pedestal anymore.
All of Lao people should be the lords of our land. Not the Monarchy, not the Oligarchy, and definitely NOT Communism and the Viet Congs.

Mika30041975 Communism was strong back then. No question about that. The Soviet Union and Communist China played a major role in helping the Viet Congs take over South Vietnam and Laos.
But if Laos had a prime minister who wasn't a Communist sympathizer, Laos may have prevented the Communist from taking over. You have to understand the prime minister of Laos at the time brought in his Communist brother and kicked the Americans out of Laos.
The prime minister who made the decision to bring in the Communist didn't even let Lao people know. The Lao public were kept in the dark.
This is one of the reasons why I have strong aversion to the Monarchy. Anything is better than Communism, but still, going back to Monarchy will be a step back for Laos.
Laos need to move beyond Communism and Monarchy. These archaic ideas of governing should be left in the past.

Yes, the Laos King was in Luangprebang province in his kingdom palace on May 15th, 1975 when North Vietnamese and Pathet Laos storm his palace. The remaining Royotal Laos troop try to protect the kings after a few hour of gunbattle, alot of the Royal Laos soldier was killed or capture. The NVA and Pathet Laos rush into the kings his throne seat and force the king and his wife off the seat. They made him knee and craw and arrested him. The Kings of Laos was imprison in LuangPrebang for a few weeks. There was this Hmoob Thao guy, forgot his name but my father said he was one of General Vang Pao his commander soldier too. He got order from GVP in thailand to try and help free the king, so that Thao guy, and about 30+ hmong soldier lauch an assault on the Military Base that was holding the King. After a few a hours of battle. The Hmong retreated and couldn't saved the Laos King because their was to many Pathet Laos and North Vietnamese guarding the base. after this incident the Pathet Laos, send the king of laos to a prison can " VayXai " in houaphan province near vietnam boarder. The kings of laos and tou beely fong both where executed there

Laos has been ruled by Vietnam since 1975 and since then the Laotians have been trying to kick them out. That is why Hanoi's grip on Laos is so tight. They don't want to lose Laos, which they see as their possession. But Laos will be Lao again. When Vietnam loses Cambodia they'll lose Laos as well.
