Thanks. Your video had more things that other beginner videos assumed you know, so a good video for someone who knows nothin! Even some very pro videos didnt explain that the rod doesnt touch the metal but stays the width of the rod above it while welding. Great Job!
Welded a Air Conditioner frame for our church 20+ years ago with my uncle. LOVED IT! Love fabricating. Definitely need to take a class. Miller needs to set her up with a tripod, camera and lights. Thanks Athena!
Great video. Just bought an arc welder and the last time I did any welding was 50 odd years ago! So quite nervous about trying again but your video has given me the confidence to just get on in there and do it. Thank you Athena.
Do it man, I just started class 3 months ago and bought a cheap $70 yes welder brand stick welder off Amazon and I love it! Welding is a great trade to learn wether ur professionally doing it or just use the knowledge when needed
I MUST CONGRATULATE THE PERSON WHO HAS TAUGHT WELDING TO YOU
HE/SHE IS INDEED A VERY GOOD TEACHER,
AND SO ARE YOU.
AND YOU ARE A GOOD LEARNER TOO.
👏👏👏
My welding days are over but I still do the odd welding every now and again . Before I started welding I've been out working on farm jobs 5years , then working as a mechanic in a garage 3 years /and doing coach building 3years /then working as a fabricating welder 10years/ and later on as a cook asistan in restaurant, then being a hammerhand with carpentry work on building sites 4 years/to driving in heavy machinery in logging in the last almost 17years The one job I was really after was cabinet making but didn't quite get there . Nowadays I'm just a lollipop man on stop and go signs on traffic control with people who underestimate people like me (a bunch of know-it-alls who know nothing about the outside world ) . This welding video brings back good memories when I started young . A good video for all those who want to learn about welding .
You sound like me but with more job experience. I never stayed anywhere more than about 5 years.(except carpentry) I was forced into a situation where I had to learn to build some cabinets on a flood house. No problem i'm a carpenter I thought...I would imagine the skill level needs to be close to a machinist as being of a quarter of an inch total on almost anything can result in a disaster...lol
@@buckbradley2501 yes bro ,true . On the job that I'm doing now I've had a go at drainage culverts , I enjoyed the work , as you say a quarter of an inch can be disastrous it could mean all those heavy pipes has to be lifted out , dangerous too .
As a MAG welder currently welding for the us army: this is really helpfull if you want to pick up stick welding, if you master that, most other types of welding are easy to learn, this is a great way to start!
I came here because my welding teacher sent me this video, I stayed because this woman is gorgeous
Wildly inappropriate, I’m glad u said it so I didn’t have to 😂
@@mrxkyle22x lol
She is the prettiest welding instructor I have ever seen...i could of learned more about welding if she was my teacher
The standard all purpose electrode in the UK is the 6013, will re strike every time, easy to use in any position, doesn't need drying.
Great all-round rod, apart from vertical fillets. I just cannot avoid slag inclusion in that position no matter what I try.
Not much penetration with 6013
6013 is the most popular in the US for casual homeowner use. Pretty weldments, fast fill, ok in wind. Most field repairs here are 6011/6010 due to great penetration and tolerance to muck. We only dry for low-hydrogen applications. 7018 is a popular lo-hy here.
@@Mikael5732 agreed 6013 is a “farmers” electrode, easy to handle but far from strong
Thanks for sharing. Over the last 4 years I have had to learn how to weld on the job. First learned to tig stainless then I got a bunch of practice with wire feed. I personally prefer to tig weld. I am better at it and I think it's much cleaner. I've seen several coworkers stick weld but never tried it until recently. Again thanks for sharing you definitely helped...
After 35 years of different industrial welding i can stick weld with the best of them.I still have problems unsticking it though.
lol
Thanks for the video, great tip about "pushing" in the stick! I've watched about 10 other stick welding videos, and that was the first time I heard that. Much appreciated.
Total welding n00b, here. Not only were you one of the best 'intro to SMAW' vids, but w/ you, I learned some very key details others omitted for whatever reason. I found your basic rules easy to memorize & after about 5mins of scratching to start an arc, I fell into my sweet spot & can repeat it about 80% of the time. Sometimes, IDK what went wrong, but something did. Thank you - subbed!
26yrs at welding I still like a refresher coarse thks
Well, a month later and I finished the trailer with my Amico 160D and all my welds turned out very nice and I've used the trailer to haul lots of metal, I'm getting into blacksmithing, so I'm going to be welding a forge together and the metal is much heavier than what I was using on the trailer. I have to wait for the weather to break, since I don't really have an inside shop yet that is heated. It's really cold out right now, the high today was 27 degrees and we are getting snow, sleet and freezing rain tonight and into tomorrow so, not conducive to welding outside. I will be building a shop for blacksmithing and the forge will heat it up nicely, so if I have to do any welding in the winter months, I should be able to do it in there. Anyway I digress, I just wanted to drop a line after watching your video again, I just feel really thankful to have found your video, which improved my welds immensely and given me a lot of confidence, when I approach a job now. Thanks to you! 🥽
Great job! Im teaching myself stick welding at the mo - with a little help from youtube! Pretty much everything you said, agrees with all the vids Ive seen... Im hoping to buid a tilting elec trike in the end - but need to get better at box section welding before I cut into any bikes!!! Thanks again - great vid!
Hi! I took welding back in high school and I kinda enjoyed it but as a high school kid never thought of it as a career, now I'm in my late 30s and I would have loved to have learned and have finished it, I'm in need to weld a few things around the house and I need it too to restore my car, I have been watching some vids on the basics and how to start but I guess I misunderstood the title of the video, and as for the comments I thought I could find something useful too but it seems like most commentators came for different reasons, anyway your company seems to be a good one to work for cause you seem really happy and genuine when you talk and show all that you work with.
I bought an old Sears stick welder for $50.00 bucks I watched welders at work for many years but I never welded anything until I bought my old welder and I taught myself from what I picked up at work . When I retired in my 60’s I welded thick washers to the head of large steel spikes to make trailer hitch pins for my small tractors then tried all different stuff .I love this video cause she’s cute and very informative love her

Hi there ,I just started welling 4 months ago Mig and Arc ,I watch a lot of welding videos and I have to say ,I really like the way you explain stuff ,great Job and thanks
Ma'am you just thought me more than 3 days of video watching has. I wanted to pick this up as a hobby. Thanks
I'm glad she was able to think you about welding. Do you even grammar?
Um, really? Um, were you um, searching for um, welding?
Called a "coupon" because it's a smaller piece of metal that's been detached. "Couper" is "cut" in French, so a coupon is any kind of off-cut.
Then what's a "french fry"?
Coupon is French for "the unused
(scrap) part leftover when a large piece is cut to dimension"
Don’t tell a woman welder that, that’ll be be sexist if you say that.
Bob calls them coopins!
@@Panchdara Bob's great
Not only she adorable!! But she actually can stick weld..!!! I'm in love!!!!!!! Great job love.
Very informative. Great video keep them coming. I've been welding for years and still like to watch just the basics and will share the informative videos to up and coming welders... Great Job
A very good instructional video. For any future videos, I would recommend having your camera person put the camera in a horizontal position. It is much easier to watch a video in a horizontal position and it allows for a better full screen view for your viewers. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, you are a very good welder.
Yeah, those big black bars are awful. Like watching through a damn keyhole.
"If there's slag, you drag."
That alone was worth the price of admission!
Thx!
i have been stick welding for 40 years and never vertical welded from bottom to top
always top to bottom and a ship builder tought me a lot
but i will try your way mabe its better i will see
Would it make a difference depending on how the weld terminates?
(Ends, or changes direction)
Very clear lesson. Explained well by a very intelligent and capable young lady. Thanks Athena!
Thanks for the video - I found it extremely informative and educational as I am a beginner (DIYer). Some of the tips you have given are new to me (I haven't come across them in other videos). Thank you!
So glad you mentioned comfort, biggest oversight when it comes to welding in my opinion
If it takes an extra minute to dig a spot out in the dirt, I'll do it 100% of the time. If i'm between a rock and a hard place, I'll get situated best as I can and let 'er rip, but it's never as easy as welding on a table.
Did my training 1978/79/80, and we were told that the first thing to do when welding, was to "get comfortable".
Very proud of you you don't see very many women learning how to weld I am happy for you keep up the good work very proud of you Bob Elkhart Indiana
Great video. Hopefully it inspires many to take up welding. Nice to see a woman who may inspire other women.
About that college instructor hung up over bending rods. I guess we all have things that we get all picky over and in practicality don't hold water. I can't count the number of professional welders that routinely bend rods, excuse me electrodes (see way too many pointless hangups out there). In fact, when in a tight position where you cannot get to a weld without bending the rod just what is Mr instructor going to do? Use a bunch of stubbies so he has 27 restarts on the top of a pipe tucked up in some tight space. Give me a break. It's one thing to say "If you bend the rod you might break off some flux and risk introducing inclusions yada yada..." vs kicking them out of class. We only have one life to live in this world and getting hung up over piddly little things isn't worth it. I like to think I'm getting better at not being hung up over things and am doing a better job of explaining pros/cons instead. So fellow welding youtubers, whats your favorite story of someone being hung up over nothing?
If I could like your comment more than once I would.
as the title of the video states . . .is for beginners , do not try to be an expert on your comment !! we need to be more constructive
@@xerxesleonidas4500 I wish I knew what you are trying to say... Perhaps I misread it. Can you explain?
One thing that one of my instructors hates is how often I add filler while tig welding. Then another instructor came around, looked at the weld, and said to the other, “I mean, it isn’t over or under filled so I don’t see what the issue is.” Most things chalk up to personal preference, there’s multiple ways to skin the preverbal cat of welding.
@9187061050
That’s what I’m sure he meant by his Comment.... at least that is what I pictured. I Cut my own Hair. Similar. 🤦🏻♂️😜
Great clip! Would love to see more, a natural teacher and a helpful intro
When I started 40 years ago I hated the Clamp Electrode Holders due to small hands and strong clamp springs. A welder put me on to the "Bernard Short Stub" electrode holders and never used anything else. I bend rods all the time to get into places. I burn they up to the flux break and stop if it's a problem. Whatever works for you is great to get the job done. Take Care, Best Wishes.
Considering going to weld school soon. This video was very informative and motivating!
You’re not just an excellent welder, you’re a great teacher. And that’s from a guy perhaps three times your age who’s an empirical learner. I cannot be taught. Thank you for sharing
It's probably because she's attractive that you pay attention to her.
@@trichotillomaniac1959 Or maybe I meant what I wrote because it’s true. And you probably made that silly comment because you have a dirty little mind. What can’t you accept that she just very good at what she does?

great tip, on the distance to keep the electrode. That is my biggest problem. Finding the sweet spot.
after watching that part of your video over and over and over again I finally found it. thank you and the I was doing cursive e's so thank you for that tip. as well
I love this video because she tell the end and out about welding I was welding for almost a year now
The second arc (stick) weld I ever did, the slag lifted itself off as a long scorpion tail. What a fluke ! I never did a repeat performance as neat as that. Oh yes, a pro set up the machine for me.
There are times when bending your stick electrode is the only way to reach an area for welding. One common example could be a trailer hitch on a car, when you have to run a bead on the top but can only reach it from the bottom. TIG or MIG will never fit, but you can bend your stinger into a nice "J" and reach the right spot in a snap. The only down side, of course, is that the flux coating will probably fall off so you have no electrical insulation present at the bend.
Nice intro vid. I'm still on the simple horizontal with a 1960s buzz box and 6018 rod. Learning is slow but there is progress..
I did my first welding yesterday. I did about everything wrong. I'll try many or all of what you suggested in this video.
Yup. I subscribed. I'm in welding school right now and this video is fantastic.
I just started welding school last month I'm started with stick welding now I'm about to start Tig welding
What I like most about this trade is it forces you to take pride in it; the welds should be of good quality and look good. I'm not saying all of mine check the second box all the time, but it's what I strive for and I'll sacrifice aesthetics over quality every time
I got a challenge for her it's called welding air together between two metals . . Gotta say I like her presentation on this video. . A like a d thumbs up 👍
Wish my welding wife would make a video for other women to get into it. Well done
This was overall an awesome educational video and it’s so cool to see woman burnin rod a beautiful woman burnin rod I never knew that made those!
I'm so disappointed in myself for not getting into welding until 30. I made a career mistake and went to culinary school after high school. So upset about that in my life, so all you young folk who are at the age of leaving high school and deciding to weld, go for it!
I only took it up in my late 50s, when I semi retired on health grounds. I spent over 20 years as a chef and then took a law degree, neither of which involved sticking two pieces of metal together.
Once I got my degree I started working in a forensic service for adults with learning disabilities which I loved. When my condition disabled me I started working 12.5 a week as a welfare advisor. It’s never too late to change direction and never regret where you’ve been, life it a constant learning curve.
Be glad that they've advanced more with safety now. Welders didn't typically make it pass their late 50s.
Don't feel bad . Things like this come to our life at a particular time for a particular reason in a way we cannot see them. I'm 50 and I just started attending a trade school on this. I look at it like this , get down or lay down.
You must have been a great student because you are a great teacher! I have seen many videos from experienced welders and they were great, but it is nice to see the perspective from someone who is rather fresh from education (you look young to me, but I am getting older and it is getting harder to tell someone's age, so no offense if you have been at this for years). Thank you!
I stick welded once - it looked awesome till I knocked the slag off and nice little gap between the two pieces :D I'll "stick" to TIG and MIG :D
Great advice , I know its about how to weld but welders suffer with lung issues due to fume inhalation, its good practice to show good air circulation or devices that should be in work shop to prevent breathing in them toxic fumes, specially welding stainless steel,
Great too see you actually wearing the proper gear. So many videos show (blokes!!!) not wearing protective gear.
But, your background music was louder than your voice. So, old blokes like me struggle to hear it properly...
Keep up the good work though! We need more people doing it right, so younger people learn the right techniques.
the far the clearer Innstructor...thank you....
Great work and straight to the point good hands on the up weld from AUSTRALIA.
Great information. I would enjoy having you as an instructor. Great job
try sliding the hammer on the edge of the flux covered weld, if you welded it right it will come off in almost one piece every time
and you wont have hammer marks on your hot beautiful weld
true story
Good tip
Definitely the prettiest welder i've ever seen.
On flat position, there was a welding defect called "fingerprint" you should on the end of welding line change the electrode angle :)
Change the angle how exactly? I'm a beginner and would like to know. Do you have a video of yours you could give me a link to. Thanks
Best looking instructor ever!!
You are a good teacher 😊 and a really good welder 😊 thank you it helps and I am planning to do a welding course take care x 👍🏼
Excellent!! You make me smile!! Nice video and presentation.
very interesting for me as a beginner, it will be helpful to know how many amps we need for this kind of electrodes
Hi Athena, thanks for this. I found it to be a most informative video as I am very much a beginner. Can you please tell me what settings you used? Amps etc....
By the way, I had an older neighbor lady I became good friends with named Berthina Givens, R.I.P. Who was a shipyard welder during WW2! She recently passed away, Bless her soul. She met her husband who was a chef aboard the USS Victory, a war ship now anchored in San Pedro, California and is a museum.
She has cool presentation on this vid along with her welds . Again cool vid 😊❤
I'm Emilio, from the philippines, thank you so much for your sharing to us,I've got something from you.
Really good beginner tutorial - thanks a bunch :)
I just ran into your video, and i think your awesome down to earth person. Love your method of teaching your funny , i mean it in a nice way. Love your accent. 👍🏻
I like her presentation and her weld demonstrations . Ur cool .
Congratulations 👏 👏 👏 and thank you for the class, I'm trying to learn how to weld, great video, keep up the great job, thank you!!😀
Coupons are named so because they are a Sample to give for tests, or to customers for samples. I have also heard a theory that originally they were named cause they're the size of a (commonly sized) coupon from products for advertising. Ofcourse they very in size, and shape, depending on what's needed.
Lots of handy info for a new welder, THANKS! I see lots of videos online about fillet welding 90 degrees, do you have any advice for when it comes to welding other angles? (E.g. 25 degrees, 30 degrees etc).
That's some nice welding, bravo!
I found this video very beneficial, I've been welding for a few years now, mostly self taught and I never heard anyone say anything about removing the flux off the tip to get a good arc. I've had problems with this and the way you explained it made perfect sense, when you likened it to a pencil. You have beautiful welds, lots better than mine, but I'm hoping that by following your tips my welds will look lots better. One thing that bothers me about your video, at least this one(it's my first) it looks like your doing your videos with your cell phone, it makes everything look very narrow. I bought a cheap 4k camera with a tripod and it makes the videos so much better looking and with your awesome shop and all your equipment, you want to show it off. But I really love your video and I learned more from this video than I have from all the welding videos that I've watched and I have watched a lot of welding videos. If I had seen this one before I started stick welding, it would have saved me a lot of headaches. I started out with a Harbor Freight 90 amp stick welder and after lots of frustrating hours, I graduated to an Amico Electric 160D and it is a whole lot better machine to weld with. I thought that the problem with the Chicago Electric was that the amperage was too low, but when I got the 160D I found that I was burning through the metal, turns out I turned it down to 70 amps and was getting better welds that wouldn't break when I hammer tested the weld I was getting more consistent beads than I was getting with the Chicago Electric turned all the way up. I have all the sticks you mentioned, but I like 6013 the best so far for what I've been welding, which is 1.5" mild steel angle. I raised the sides on my tow trailer with them.
Best guide ive managed to find thank you
Thank you for sharing this very educational video.
How come you didn’t have the 6011 sticks in the oven?
That was really helpful to me. Thank you so much!
You're a very good welder. How does the term "Wonder Welder Woman" sit with you? Sounds okay to me!
What's so amazing about a female welder today? Women were doing most of the welding and machinery during the 2nd World War. Doesn't anyone remember that?
Rosie the Riveter? :)
@@ThatWasPrettyFunny Its called history class
You're the one making a big deal about a female welder. I'm here for the content regardless of who's presenting... Male, Female, Kids, Old People.... Doesn't matter, if the content is good and educational. That's all that matters.
@@mikethelma Wanda the welder!
When you were going vertically, did you use any type of weave movement or in the pattern of a “U”?
You don’t use a “U” manipulation there will be to much build up on the centre of the weld.......side to side manipulation no wider than the diameter of the electrode or “rod”
🌹🌹🌹👍
Is welding hard to learn? I’m interested in going to school to learn it but have no background in it
Anyone can learn, believe in yourself!
It’s easy. It’s all mental. It’s one of those things that you’ll only learn by doing. You can watch all the videos and read all the books in the world, but you’re not going to learn unless you burn some rods. The price of machines have gone down, so it’s not that expensive to learn.
thanks for the info. this was helpful for me.
"Comfortable and confident"... will try... thank you..
The practice "coupons" are called that because "coupon" not only refers to a negotiable certificate that can be detached and redeemed, but also means a test sample of a substance.
Awesome video, and awesome beads, congrats!!!!
Nice. I was a welder for 25 years. My Doctor says I need more potassium in my diet, I hate bananas. Can I chew on 6011 electrodes?
man you know your still a welder. WELDER FOR LIFE!!! congrats on 25 year im hitting 5 yrs
My advice - just buy and eat dark molasses. One of the best natural mineral source.
you done an amazing job on the welding and you said some things that i never knew
Good video for people just starting off. Only issue I would have as someone who started welding in family pipeline fab shop at 13 and 21 years on pipeline with only 4 x-ray bust. There are times in the real world one needs to bend the stick. If they can get in a more comfortable positions with it bent let them do it.
Best video for clear instructions and explanations !
THANK YOU for making this video!!. Can you please make a video about the salary?
This was very beneficial indeed and I thank you for the lesson . I did have a question . Is it a good idea to weld over a weld to achieve double the strength so to speak . Specifically , the wedge on my log splitter broke off , so I have to reweld it . Needless to say it takes a lot of pressure so I need a strong weld . I'm new to welding .
