How can we make black ink in this way?

    • @CrystalBridgesMuseum

Hi, Shahinoor! Thanks for asking. You can create black ink by crushing vine charcoal with a mortar and pestle and adding water by the teaspoon until you get the consistency you’re looking for.

Hi Amelhia! You could try boiling the fruit or bark from the tree in water or vinegar to see if the color infuses into the liquid.

The title should be named: How to make a dye out of berries. A dye is different from an Ink.

This is cool, but I have serious trouble calling any of these mixtures "ink". There are some very good inks made from these ingredients, and many more. These are really ink substitutes, not ink. They're only called ink because they substitute for the real thing when you're out of ink, and either lack access to more, or don't know how to make real ink from natural ingredients, or can afford to buy real ink. Just to begin at the beginning, fruit juice is not ink, even if you add water, salt, and vinegar.

This is cringe. These are not inks, it's just water with very little pigmentation in it. You need a binder like gum arabic for it to start becoming an ink and then some other stuff. You are much better off just buying the cheapest inks you can find at the craft store and they'll be a hundred times more pigmented than this colored useless soup. 2/10
