Making 230v mains sockets usable in the caravan

  • In this video i look at making our kitchen 230v mains outlets both usable at the same time.
This video shows how simple it is to make adjustments and should give you confidence to do this yourself. Of course, you can ask your dealership to do this for you, or a mobile engineer if you don't feel confident in tackling this job.

I know your van is in storage, but others, make sure you turn off electric first. Also, turn off 12v, as some sockets contain both and best not to blow 12v fuses either!

  • @davidprice2525

On our Bailey Unicorn IV Cartagena Bailey fitted the 2x sockets in the kitchen sideways (as Dan moved his too in the video) I still thought this less then optimal so I moved the bottom socket so its vertical (as it would be at home) this works well for us both sockets fully accessible, minimal trailing wires.
I also rotated the socket on the side of the front chest 180 degrees so the cable exits the plug towards the front of the van, again neater and less trailing cable for lamp on front chest.
Easy job as Dan demonstrates. Great videos Dan keep up the good work.

I bet you're absolutely right that it's not just a bailey problem. It just makes you wonder what quality control is for. It's the little things you can put right but feel you shouldn't have to that's a bit of a pain. Great video Dan. 👍👍

It can be quite daunting when looking at something that you spent quite a bit of money on and thinking I'm going to start unscrewing and changeing stuff.

Nice easy job Dan. I have seen this before in other manufactures vans, as a keen caravaner if I was working caravan manufacturing I would look at that and say 'that's not going to work' Maybe that's the issue, the people who put our caravans together on the line are not caravaners! Cheers matey

Ah Dave the problem is that, with AC, the sine wave might hit the walls if the sockets are horizontal, reducing the available voltage by up to half. That axiomatically means one might just have well used only one full-voltage socket, rather than two half-voltage ones. Fine but that would fail to power 240v appliances, so the manufacturer is deliberately preventing one from making such a mistake - as neither appliance would work then. Better, they think, to at least power one appliance so that it works. So it is actually genius - we should all realise that. Hope that explanation is as good as the sockets themselves. Cheers! :)

Its the same issue with the power bank you showed recently. And another issue with these sockets is that some plugs hit the surrounding trim before fully seating, leaving a small gap.
