Similar young men, sent to die in their millions by old wealthy men. English and Germans did play football and share food the first Christmas. My Grandfather’s brother died there - the first war was only an expression of a pi£sing contest between Germany and Britain. Pitiful waste of life, which led to Nazism and a far worse war. You guys probably come from a country that was taken over by a European country. My country was the first to be conquered and partially colonised by the English, later British Great emotional reaction ❤️👍🏽👍☘️
A pawn mentally deranged enough to make peace abd play with their enemies right before going back to slaughtering them. There is nothing good about this wartime Christmas story. They should have either surrendered to eachother or took the opportunity to destroy the other side during this Xmas ninesense
The reason this hits home is that it really happened at Christmas in 1914. The reason that they all went back to their respective trenches is because those in Higher Command Echelons didn't want their soldiers to get too friendly with the enemy. Why? Because in war each side tends to vilify the other side in order to get their soldiers to fight. Each side in WW1 thought that they were the "good guys" and the opposition were the "enemy". So if soldier's from each side get together and start finding common ground then it would become much harder to fight each other. It's a sad fact of war. So rather than let the soldiers just have one day where they weren't fighting against each other, their own sides started shelling close to them, making them all have to go back to their trenches or risk being killed.
Bollocks...this never happened...no evidence at all... Hollywood fairytales are not proof...no record's on both sides described anything like this fantasy, it's a nice thought but a total noncence, sorry !
Absolutely love everything you said in this. As a Brit, it really warms my heart hearing the passion in your voices when sharing the same opinion of war that we all have all over the world. We don't want it. We want peace. I love everything you do/say when watching and learning these things that happened in our history on Earth together. We are so far away and yet have so much more in common with one another than we do with our local politician. Merry Christmas you lovely lot x
You should absolutely watch the story behind this. The Christmas truce was real. This actually happened. There are diaries where British soldiers spoke to German soldiers. They both believed they had God on their side. (Due to people in power telling them this). Some refused to fight after this. Back then, soldiers would be court martailed and go to prison for refusing. Soldiers who refused to obey orders and left the front could be shot.
@@anthonyeaton5153 Sorry but whatever prompted you to say this is wrong! Fact - a Christmas truce memorial was unveiled in Frelinghien, France, on 11 November 2008. At the spot where their regimental ancestors came out from their trenches to play football on Christmas Day 1914, men from the 1st Battalion, The Royal Welch Fusiliers played a football match with the German Battalion 371.
This advert still gets me teary. I've worked for Sainsburys since 2002 and can remember being shown this a few days before it aired for the first time on TV. Yes, this actually happened. Sadly some soldiers were killed because they thought it was a trap etc, which is understandable really. Obviously that wouldn't be part of the advert. The advert was to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1.
My great grandfathers served on opposite sides in WW1. My German great grandfather moved to London after the war. My grandfather's were Royal Navy and Army in WW2. I joined the Royal Navy at 16, then joined the army years later. This ad always puts a few wee tears in my eyes ! Have a great Christmas 👍 love the channel 👍
I was a British soldier serving in the Northern Ireland conflict in Belfast in the 1980s. Christmas was always a bad time, thinking of family back home. Christmas Day was usually quiet, the terrorists would have a ceasefire in place for a few days. I patrolled through the Short Strand area Christmas night, and looking into the windows of houses I could see families enjoying themselves. War and conflict should never happen. People need to speak first before acting.
Same. Spent Christmas '72 living in a rat-infested country house in the Armagh countryside. My four days off just after Christmas were joyous - I got engaged to my girl, now my wife of 51yrs. Did 4 Tours in the '70s but that was the only Christmas one.
I also cry every time i see this Advert Especially how Britain has gone These days. I cry how no one respects Britain Anymore. If it wasn't for our Ancestors fought and died for Britain 😢 We Would Of Lost It To Germany.

This was the first Christmas of the War so they hadn't learned to hate eachother yet. Also a lot of British Christmas traditions come from Germany via Hanovarian Kings and Queen Victoria's German husband, Albert. Hence, they both knew the same Christmas carols. Both sides Generals started shelling the troops to get them back in their trenches.
Based upon true events and it always brings a lump to the throat. Glad that Britain and Germany are now allies whilst the world continues to deal with the craziness of war,
Very touching reaction! War is really a crime against humanity. There are actually more videos on this topic, if you type in "Chistmas truce", or "Christmas truce song" or "Christmas truce history" or "Christmas in the trenches". :)
A true story that happened on Christmas eve 1914 when a few of the soldiers in certain trenches exchanged gifts, sang carols and had a game of football. It was frowned on by officers on both sides. But they showed the true value of Christmas.
Slave solders decided to open up to the enemy army and cease fire for the evening while playing football and others. But before you think this is sweet, realise that they went right back to killing eachother. Is thst what you consider sweet? Engagement even if it ends in mutual slaughter? You are lost.
My great grandfather fought in this war, served under the British, I still have the photo of him in the trenches in the form of a postcard he sent home after he was taken prisoner by the Germans. He said they treated him very nicely, I believe they even played cards or chess at some point. But this was the Great War, things were different from WW2.

I visited the graves of my two great uncles in Belgium, and it was so moving to see cemetery after cemetery along the sides of the road - of all nationalities, so young ... all of them somebody's son, brother, husband or friend. So many lives lost ... they died for it to never happen again - our leaders have failed each and every one over and over again. #LestWeForget 😢

Basically the people do not want to go to war but the political systems around the world determine that a small minority of rulers have a vision or desire to want expansion which can be best typified by the present desire for Vladimir Putin wanting expansion of Russia which is the largest country on the planet and is so self conscious of his completely unnecessary invasion of another country he refuses to call it a war .

The Christmas Truce is a real event that happened in WW1, from Christmas Eve 1914 to Boxing Day 1914 ( 24th December to 26th December). Around 200,000 British and German troops left their trenches and met in no man's land, to celebrate Christmas, to bury there dead, sing Christmas songs, wish each other merry Christmas, exchange gifts and to play a Football match between the British troops and the German troops, the Football was provided by a Soldier from the London Irish Regiment, which is still around today and can be seen in the London Irish Regiment museum at there Barracks in London. Only British and German troops were involved in the Christmas Truce, French soldiers were forbidden to join in under the order of execution. There is a cross marking one of the places where the Christmas Truce was held. It was erected in 1994 to mark the 80th anniversary of the event by the British Prime Minister, the German Chancellor and the French President in a ceremony in 1994. 💂♂️🇬🇧🏴🇮🇪

This actually happened. What it doesn't show is the fact that they agreed to this truce, while there were hundreds if not thousands of casualties all around them. For a pointless war.
We have had many great football matches against the Germans over the years, none quite as meaningful as this one. For just a few hours, they were just blokes enjoying a game together. Then they were enemies again trying to kill each other due to orders.
It's only a few people at the top of society that cause these wars and then force the people to fight each other and die when in reality we don't want to fight and we are all the same, and the people who start the wars hide away while the rest suffer.

It’s a true story!!!
The British and Germans are really close even though a lot don't like to admit it. The Germans are fantastic people and I respect them dearly
Maybe they don't like to admit it because after they were really close they went right back to slaughtering eachother.
