They might have been a one hit wonder in the US, but they were one of the biggest bands of the 80s here in Europe. I absolutely love them and will hopefully be able to see them again live next year. I had a ticket for the 40 year anniversary tour before the pandemic hit and the tour was rescheduled. Fingers crossed. Oh, you gave a shout out to the drum work on this song. Their drummer at that time was Mel Gaynor who already worked with David Bowie in the mid-70s, a fantastic drummer.

Simple Minds have been one of my favourite bands since the early eighties (best decade EVER!!) - lucky enough to have seen them live about a dozen times over the years & they are awesome ( and most definitely not one hit wonders! 😀). 🥰😍
"Alive and kicking" (a must...it hits in all the same ways as this song does and very popular) also great is "All the things she said" and "See the lights " and "Promised you a miracle"
One of my favourite bands ever. Please try Glittering Prize, Someone somewhere in summertime, Promised you a miracle. Another great piece of drumming is on "Bad Reputation" (the single) Thin Lizzy, by Brian Downey.
One of the best live bands I’ve ever seen! Massive quality back catalogue. Was due to see them again in Dublin last April until covid fucked everything up😩
This song was featured in the 1985 film The Breakfast Club about a group of high school students spending a Saturday in detention. Great song and a great movie as well. you should check out Tears For Fears, They were from that same era.
Funny story. I saw SM live in Sydney in 1986 with my ex- husband. Unfortunately, we had had our first argument just before the concert. I already knew all the songs and the concert should have been great. Turns out, we weren’t speaking to each other the whole night. So, all I remember about that concert was us sitting next to each other with really bad vibes. 😂😂 It’s funny, the things we remember through music...
I was a very dark and suicidal teenager when this song was popular. I remember being in a car with my mom and this song played on the radio. She said "I dedicate this song to you." It became Our Song. After she died, I asked her time and time again, to hear Our Song and without fail, it played on the radio, played next on my spotify play list... I hear it when I miss her most, when I need to hear her voice; when i need to not feel as alone... Thanks for covering this song. You did so, just as I asked: Mom, please play our song.... As always, she did...
Reminds me of Billy Idol. That is a good one for you to check out! Rebel Yell, white wedding and sweet 16 which is based on a true story.. just a few of Billy's great songs
This song was written for the movie by Billy Idol's guitarist and songwriter .John Hughes wanted Simple Minds music in the movie because he was a fan. Billy does his version of this song and when he does you hear how it falls in with the rest of his music.
Mel Gaynor is a fantastic drummer. I particularly loved his work on the "Sparkle in the Rain" album. You should do the song "Waterfront" from that record.
One of my favorite songs, i've listened to Simple Minds with earbuds on on the top of the mountain, it's... INCREDIBLE, such liberating feeling, just powerful. "Alive and Kicking" it's also awesome one.
Here we go! (Please check out "All the Things She Said" and "Alive and Kicking") We had a foreign exchange student from Norway in our class in '84. He told us about "a band back home that was as popular (to them) as the Beatles". He said the were called Simple Minds. None of us had ever heard of them at the time. Then the movie "The Breakfast Club" came out.....
This is why I love watching reaction videos, Jay! I honestly thought this was a David Bowie song all this time!! LOL I’ve never seen the video or looked it up before just thought it sounded like DB. Now I know! I LOVE you input on the musicality of these songs like when you talk about the instruments and singing skills. Enjoy your reactions so much!
One of the best songs of the '80s; the song of a generation. If you have not seen "The Breakfast Club", do yourselves a favor and seek out this movie. It is relevant to this day and this song puts into words every awkward encounter you experienced in High School and beyond.

One last thing to say, that drummer is unbelievable live. Totally awesome drummer who really knows how to bang.
Thanks for doing this song. This brings back memories of John Hughes films in general, and The Breakfast Club in particular. The young actors in his films were called "The Best Pack". Lol. The Breakfast Club movie was nicknamed "the little chill", because it was a teen film reminiscent of the boomer film, "The Big Chill".
You guys all taking me down memory lane to my teens...(YUP - im THAT old....) just such a happy place going back to these tracks. The days when the synthesiser was KING. Every band of that era used them.

Breakfast club!!! One of my favorite movies.. can't hear this dang without seeing them walk out of the detention and going their ways.. did you notice the tv with clips from the movie?
They might have been a one hit wonder in the US, but they were one of the biggest bands of the 80s here in Europe. I absolutely love them and will hopefully be able to see them again live next year. I had a ticket for the 40 year anniversary tour before the pandemic hit and the tour was rescheduled. Fingers crossed.
Oh, you gave a shout out to the drum work on this song. Their drummer at that time was Mel Gaynor who already worked with David Bowie in the mid-70s, a fantastic drummer.
From the soundtrack of a HUGE movie called "The Breakfast Club" 1985 I think.
They had 2 other songs I liked:
"Alive And Kicking"
"All The Things She Said"
All The Things She Said is my favorite.
@@monicamad1285 I really like his old sound with 'I Promised You A Miracle.'
Love “Alive and Kicking!”
It is outrageos that some people think about a stupid movie that I have many SM fans have NEVER seen!!! Simple Minds are one of the best new wave bands from the end of the 70's , don't you is BY FAR their worst song!!!! It's incredible how ignorant the masses are!!!
margix and look again here you are 😂😂😂😂😂 biggest troll I’ve ever seen can’t even say something different lmao 😂 I’m actually finding hilarious!!!!!
This band was more than a one hit wonder group!! Check out some of their other great songs Jay, glad you chose this great time...Thanks a bunch my friend 💞 💞💞
Love this guy. I already know how’s he’s gonna react- like everyone else who’s heard this song- mesmerizing powerhouse!
Love when the base comes in strong like that.
Mel Gaynor is an incredible drummer and when you break down the fill near the end of the song it blows your mind.
RIGHT you are, wyn.
Incredible.
Mind blown.
Mel Gaynor is the man.
One of my wife's favorite songs from back then.... Great memories of her.
Breakfast Club! Ahhhhhh! Love this song so much💕 Someone Somewhere (In Summertime), All the Things She Said, Alive & Kicking, Sanctify Yourself - All good
Simple Minds have been one of my favourite bands since the early eighties (best decade EVER!!) - lucky enough to have seen them live about a dozen times over the years & they are awesome ( and most definitely not one hit wonders! 😀). 🥰😍
You should listen to the Killing Moon, and Lips Like Sugar, by Echo and the Bunnymen!! Love your reactions
Oh yes! Two of my favs!
With the way the world is today I wish I could travel back to the 80s and get a restart!
Lips Like Sugar! Excellent!
.....The Cutter....1min 47secs in....Magical an sublime....
Yep should definitely listen to The Bunnymen, my favourite band!
This song was also featured in Futurama - The luck of the fryish. A must watch episode.
You need to check out their song ‘Belfast Child’
One of the most beautiful songs ever!
Yep Definitely JoVaughn - Definitely... Belfast Child is an awesome song..
"Alive and kicking" (a must...it hits in all the same ways as this song does and very popular) also great is "All the things she said" and "See the lights " and "Promised you a miracle"
Brilliant and talented, Simple minds, being just one hit wonders, shows me there’s no justice in this world. They did loads of goods stuff.
I totally agree with you my friend, they were more than a one hit wonder band...Loved their music 🎶 just fantastic!!!
They had plenty of hits by anyone's definition. They just being discounted because they didn't happen in the US.
They also did “Alive and Kicking”, which is just as good and topped the charts!
@@louisef1861 exactly, they were pretty popular here in Europe.
Ever watched the film The brekfast club, plays at the end , they are a Irish group.
One of my favourite bands ever. Please try Glittering Prize, Someone somewhere in summertime, Promised you a miracle. Another great piece of drumming is on "Bad Reputation" (the single) Thin Lizzy, by Brian Downey.
Now you're talking !!
ALIVE AND KICKING was another big hit for Simple Minds that reached #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Top Rock tracks chart.
Yes! My favorite of theirs!!
@Turd Ferguson 😂😂 great story! Memories are fun
TrVLa Qwst Definitely. We stayed together for 19 years, so it couldn’t have been too bad an argument! 😂😂👍💖
Scottish band, absolutely brilliant....
Reminds me of Billy Idol. That is a good one for you to check out! Rebel Yell, white wedding and sweet 16 which is based on a true story.. just a few of Billy's great songs
I read somewhere Billy Idol was offered this song but declined.
Definitely should do some Billy Idol. But also recommend you watching Breakfast Club....a feel good.....classic!
This song always gives me goose bumps. That drummer is kick’n it!
I bought my car from Simple Minds' Manager.
Dude had some great stories.
One of my favorite songs, i've listened to Simple Minds with earbuds on on the top of the mountain, it's... INCREDIBLE, such liberating feeling, just powerful. "Alive and Kicking" it's also awesome one.
Jim Kerr, the singer, was married to Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders for a time.
Such a great song from a really good band! I don’t really think of them as one hit wonders, but maybe that’s because I listened to their albums.
Ya gotta put your arm up when he sings "LAAA Lalalala-aaah"
I got to the ls la la la bit at exactly the same time I read your comment about putting your arm up !!!!!
🙌
From the hit movie ‘The Breakfast Club’ with Michael Anthony Hell, Emilio Estéves, and Molly Ringwald.
This is a great song, it really hits hard with the drum rhythms and base lines. Jim Kerr's voice is so haunting and unique.
Another Simple Minds song to check out is "Alive and Kicking"
It's only relevant in seeing how badly this movie aged, it's unwatchable today
They have countless fantastic songs !! One of the best concerts I've been to !!
“Alive and Kicking” is another **HUGE** hit of theirs! Please check it out- so not exactly a 1 hit wonder- I like “alive and kicking” as much if not more than this one- and I do love this one- ✌️✨
This is great. I really like this spaciousness and the vastness which they bring in that sound. Long time ago I've been to their concert and still today they're so modern. Thank you for the reaction. God Bless.
For a while early 80’s Simple Minds were a bigger group than U2... had some big hits.. then came U2 and Sunday Bloody Sunday and U2 took over..
Yep that line, that song, iconic movie theme song. They do have other good music as well. Thanks. One of my all time favorite songs.
Check out “Alive and Kicking” and “Sanctify Yourself”. This is a great but really under appreciated band.
Thumping away at the bass to this one! I love singing this one, and it packs the dance floor
The Breakfast Club helped make this so popular.
It is outrageos that some people think about a stupid movie that I have many SM fans have NEVER seen!!! Simple Minds are one of the best new wave bands from the end of the 70's , don't you is BY FAR their worst song!!!! It's incredible how ignorant the masses are!!!
@@margix1172 I was simply stating a fact.
It was written for the movie, with this band in mind. Luckily they agreed to record it.
margix there you are again 😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@ambert7614 LOL. Holy shit, she really is spamming the comments! Superfans are hilarious.
About 8 years ago they come to play in the anphitheater just behind my house and they where great, i was never really in to them but will admit they put on a great show and with this song they had all 2,500 of us rocking and loving it. One last thing to say, that drummer is unbelievable live. Totally awesome drummer who really knows how to bang.
Breakfast Club
Glittering Prize Album is one of my all time Favs
Thanks for doing this song. This brings back memories of John Hughes films in general, and The Breakfast Club in particular. The young actors in his films were called "The Best Pack". Lol. The Breakfast Club movie was nicknamed "the little chill", because it was a teen film reminiscent of the boomer film, "The Big Chill".
Love the song "See The Lights" by Simple Minds. The extended version is even better!!!!
You guys all taking me down memory lane to my teens...(YUP - im THAT old....) just such a happy place going back to these tracks. The days when the synthesiser was KING. Every band of that era used them.
Judd Nelson was my role model after I saw Breakfast Club.
@Carlos Gierlings ohhhh the rebel 😜
Fantastic Scottish band, have a listen to Alive & Kicking or Ghostdancing by them, fantastic drumming 👌🏻👍🏻
Another under rated Scottish band were Hipsway 🙌🏻
The Scottish U2 that never quite hit the same Heights as them although I always rated them as being better🙏
Best Simple Minds Song in my opinion
“See The Lights” Drum beat to die for👏👏👏🎧
Let there be love is another fave. Seen them live in Glasgow back in 2003
@@lisadavie5819 oooh Lisa never heard that.(As I Open Spotify😜🎶🎶🎶)
They were one among a huge range of UK New Wave/New Romantic bands of the 1980's.
I was in my teen's back then...there were other great bands like The human league,Duran Duran,The Tompson twins,Spandau ballet,Yazoo and Depeche mode...to name the few i can remember right now.
Best wishes to you and yours in these very challenging time's from Dublin.
