As any of them would tell you, I've made a point of telling them how lucky, and, indeed, privileged they are to have been born here. My paternal grandfather (now passed) was born in Motherwell, in Scotland, and emigrated to Australia with his family when he was still a teenager. I often spoke to him about Scotland, given that my roots lay there. When I asked him if he was ever tempted to move back there (he did visit family there a few times), he told me that he couldn't stand the dreary Scottish weather. Clearly, he had become too Aussified to go back. I hope the rest of your time here proves to be as enjoyable as it has been thus far.

@Bonnie-Lewis-Australia that makes me really happy. I think we've got it pretty good here. Beautiful country, laidback lifestyle and a society that (for the most part) cares about each other. Not a bad place to be all things considered.
I'm glad you have settled so well in AU. A native Aussie here, I can't stand the heat of Summer hence I live in the Central Highlands of Victoria where this morning on 23 December, in Summer it was 6C! A lovely crisp cool morning with a stiff cold southerly. Amazingly, it's forecast to reach 37C in two days time as the desert winds blow south from the interior. Our lifestyle is laid back and being recently retired, I'm so much living the life and ironically planning my next holiday in the UK and Ireland next August.
Thanks for your comment - yes it’s very hot today where we are . This Victorian high country sounds beautiful. Enjoy your retirement and holiday in the uk - it is a great place too
Yes I’m sure Australian natives go elsewhere and see contrasts the locals don’t see - But we are amazed at how many people don’t like it here and think it will be better “overseas “
Thanks Freddy - I have to say the people here is one if the biggest factors in why we live here - from day 1 we’ve met lovely people- not to say people aren’t friendly in the UK but there’s no formality here - people are just so genuine
I watched your video as a new subscriber to your channel. I am an English migrant in Sydney. I don’t see it the way you do, I wish I did. I came as a 16 year old obviously not by my decision. Welcome to Aus… I’m Melbourne born and raised, always took it for granted. Only appreciated it after living in Europe for 2 years, what I liked was the history, compactness, and the Christmas markets. Now back home and enjoying the great outdoors. My parents were immigrants from Italy arriving in 1956… so glad they made the move.
We flew back into Sydney yesterday after a month overseas in the UK (London) and then the US (Chicago). We saw the sun rise when we were about 2 hours out from Sydney, and it was magical. As was seeing the Harbour Bridge and harbour as we came into land. After some pretty bone chillingly cold days in London and really cold in Chicago, we are glorying in the sunshine and looking forward to a beautiful Christmas Day next week. Experiencing the cold of Chicago (in the first week of December 2024) has cured one of us of any real desire to experience a white Christmas.

We are all different. I am Australian, from the mountains of North Queensland where it rains and drizzles for months at a time, and you are often in the clouds, and winter means ice on the car windscreen by seven in the evening. I love places like the Australian Alps, and dislike beaches, but I do love the academic life in Sydney. However I prefer London and the wonderful museums. I love weather like you get in Scotland. Mists are my favorite, but I also adore snow. I love dressing for cold weather, and never having to live with heatwaves and sweat, but as much as I prefer the more northern cold, I prefer the research possibilities in London. Unfortunately it is too easy living in Sydney, so that is where I live, in an apartment building in the CBD, and I endure the summers, while wanting winter to arrive quickly.
Thanks fit your comment and totally agree - we are all different and someone’s hell is another’s heaven- but this is just how we feel - but we know many people who have gone back to the uk - all good
@ I think, for most people, Australia is definitely the best choice. I am an oddball, who loves cold, misty, rainy weather. Most people feel depressed in weather that puts a smile on my face. There is another reason to move to Australia you didn't mention explicitly. Australia is a land of opportunities that is a rising power. It is a lot like the US in the 1950's, when Americans felt like the future belonged to them. There is a feeling of optimism and national pride. Multiculturalism hasn't worked in every country, but here it does seem to work, and most Australians tend to love those who have left their troubles behind them, and embrace Australian values of egalitarianism and building a better future. Conversely, Australians do not appreciate those who want to live in the past, and who want to import their problems that belong elsewhere. I guess I am saying, that Australia is a place where we celebrate the best of our differences, at the same time as bringing everyone together as much as possible in shared Australian ideals of equality, and treating each other well.
We were 10 pound poms in 1963. I went back to Aberdeen in 1980 and hated it. Went to England in 2017 and skipped Scotland. Perth WA is the best place to live. 😁👍 EDIT: We have 41 deg tomorrow 23.12.2024. Beautiful.
I'm a Brit living in QLD, and I agree, England is not recognizable anymore. I feel for my family who still live there, but I am so happy in Australia that I couldn't imagine moving back.
Im originally from England of irish and English family. We moved here in 1989, ive lived and worked in England as an adult for a few years. I like both countries for different reasons and we have a small place in the uk. Ideally, I will split my time between the two countries in the future. I do like Europe and we have family in Spain so nice to get over there.
Hi Glen - yes we have Scottish English and Welsh blood / yes it’s great over in Europe too - it’s good to have a contrast I agree - but coming into summer it’s hard to best gets ( for us anyway ) we have friends who don’t like the heat though
Yes we don't go to the UK for weather, I enjoyed touring around there, so much to see and do. Loved Yorkshire, Scotland and The Lakes District especially. The Isle of Sky oh my word how stunning. I just wish it was closer to OZ so it didnt cost so much to get to. Same with Europe, so many magical countries to see. Oh one powerball or big lotto win, then I would still be based in OZ as I love living here, but be able to travel 4 times a year!!
Interesting about when you decided Australia was to be your home. Of the thousands of British people who came out here on the 10 pound scheme years ago, about 25% went back to the UK, as was part of the deal if they wanted. The interesting thing is that half of that 25% eventually came back to Australia.
Thanks for your comment. Yes we love it here and we’ve Known people go back and then come back again! Ok it’s not for everyone but Australia has been so good to us- Lewis has worked for some amazing companies too. We just love it
@@debkendall I grew up with Scottish parents in a very multi-cultural small town in Victoria. My father used to say many neighbours from the UK came here for a better life and then whined that it wasn''t like home. There was definitely tangible evidence back them of the "whingeing Pom". All evidence of that now seems to have disappeared and the British migrants are, like you, so beautifully integrated into the laid back Aussie way of life. Great video. Subscribed!
having laughlines around the pockets allows you to actually enjoy a lot of this , the entire uk will fit into Victoria so visiting the major cities can be an expensive and time consuming business.
Thanks for your comment Phil and it’s so true - practically you need to fly between cities as it’s a days drive ( 10 ish hours) day from Melbourne to Sydney and Sydney ti Brisbane- and flights are expensive here compared to the low cost fares in Europe
Thanks for your comment- Yes you can walk from the final stop it’s about a twenty minute walk down hill - we like walking that Coogee Bondi path so much
@Bonnie-Lewis-Australia I spent my first 9 years in Brighton. I have returned to UK as tourist about every 10 years. The rural areas are still lovely but the cities are now really unpleasant. I am now 70 and I don't think I will go again. I am pleased you like Sydney.
When you said westies, I thought you were referring to the people in Sydney’s Greater West, but after a few times, that didn’t make sense. What are westies to you?
Perth isnt the most isolated city in the world. Its the most isolated CAPITAL city in the world. But for what its worth, Perth is far closer to all the hotspots of asia and south east asia than any of the cities on the south or east coasts of Australia, so that 'title" is a bit misleading. From Perth its easier to get to most places in Asia and south east asia than it is to get to Sydney. Its actually the east coast of australia thats the more isolated part of Australia.
Spent about a year over 6 times all over Australia. Saved my body and soul ftom damage in my native country. Shed some tears once...when flying..Otherwise unforgettable
Please stop telling everyone how it is here, we do not want it to be like where you came from! Just keep the secret to yourself and live in the moment. Cheers
Thanks for your comment but we haven’t be honest - as many will disagree with us which is fine - we just want to be authentic as we are sometimes asked if we will come back . But one man’s heaven is another man’s hell- 🙏🏼
Trouble with Australia is that you are cut off from everywhere. Nothing in the world compares to the cultural funkyness of Europe. The sea is full of stingers and the humidity in Sydney is oppressive. Also the rate of wages and disposable income in Australia is going down every year.
Thanks for your comment . I see where you are coming from but we’ve never felt cut off in Sydney and Lewis earns more here for an equivalent role in the uk but each their own and whatever makes you happy 😃
I’ve lived here 18 years now . Although I wouldn’t live any where else it’s not the Australia I came to 18 years ago . Wokism and the hard left of politics is just as reverent here as it is everywhere else in the World .. I live in Brisbane . The weathers far better than Sydney . Not to be too harsh . You see everything through rose coloured glasses
Ahh ok - we visited our friends in Brisbane last year and they took us to the Brew Dog brewery pub - Brew Dog started just a few miles from where I was born in Scotland and Lewis loves their 🍺
Thanks for your comment Ross and yes I’ve heard that too- we have good friends in Brisbane and go there quite a bit - Perth we have yet to go to but we always hear glowing reports and it’s close to Margaret River and Fremantle- but I think you won’t go far wrong whichever city you choose - we live Melbourne too😀
Melbourne has been voted the most liveable city in the world several times in the past, and even if it hasn't had that distinction in recent years, it is still a great place to live😊😊😊
But Australian trees and grasses are not as green as Scotland or other European countries. Secondly Australia is a home of lots of hazardous animals. Right?
Thanks for your comment and yes the trees maybe not as green in general but they seem very green in our garden but take your point - yes lots of hazardous animals but humans probably the most hazardous! But aussies are very friendly 😀
Nothing new for me, Came 1982 Sorry but we are full Notice, the property market is out of control So if you allowed to come, bring a lot of money Greetings from FNQ Cairns
I disagree, Sydney is like a rat race, and you have massive house prices if you want to be at the beach as you showed in your video, multi million houses, so you have to move along way out of Sydney to buy a house. I’ve lived in Perth for over 40 years and it smashes Sydney for sure. I live a 2 minute drive to the coastline which is unbeatable and the beaches are so clean and massive. Perth used to be considered a sleepy city, not any more.

@ I would love to but it totally broke my heart to see them go….perhaps again when I retire :). Ps please be truly vigilant to safeguard them from Australian “Paralysis Tic’s” …collars and sprays are not enough, constant and regular checks after every bush walk etc
"Cleanskin" wines, quoting Wikipedia - "were introduced to Australia in the early 2000s as a way for the wine industry to cope with a massive oversupply of wine, and a resulting drop in prices. As a result, wine consumption in Australia has greatly increased as of 2006."
Thanks Jay - that’s interesting - but we’ve never had a bad bottle of wine here - we usually spend about $8 and I think the good stuff will be wasted on our unsophisticated pallet 😃
UK to us is the Motherland and for me I want to see more people move here from The UK. I've noticed a few coming to Australia and the people running this country are saying that we cannot cope with a large influx of people. Hey if Israel turn a baron land into a paradise surely we can do the same here, plus we need people like you who love our country, love our ways and love our people.
Thanks for your comment Roy- yes Australia has a very low population density and apparently it can’t sustain more than about 35 million due to water but who knows
Palestine was never a barren land, it has hosted vibrant communities for thousands of years. Europeans just colonised the best parts and renamed it Israel.

Beating the summer heat and being able to avoid the increasingly stupid petty crime are the two biggies IMO. How is it that I feel safer in Bangkok than in Sydney or Melbourne ?
Thanks for your comment Arthur -Thailand sounds a great place to live - but honestly we’ve not experienced any issue with crime here petty or otherwise but I’m sure it’s about - in the UK we both had our cats broken into multiple times .
Oz isn’t as good as it used to be. But any country you go to will have pros / cons. I spent 2 years in SE Asia. It was great, but you can’t buy clean air, beaches , public parks spaces etc.
It is lovely that all you immigrants love Australia so much, but you are destroying what was once the most affordable livable countries in the world, it now isn't, it has become an unaffordable nightmare now for the Australians.
I couldn’t disagree more. I think if you researched the subject you would find that our wonderful immigrants add much to our GDP, not to mention our culture. Yes, Australia has become more expensive, as has the rest of the world, but there is little correlation between migration and rising cost of living. Tourism is more to blame here, inflating rental costs and decreasing availability for citizens. However this must be balanced against the billions of dollars annually tourism brings to Australia. I heartily welcome any migrant who loves our country. In fact, I married one.
@@Bonnie-Lewis-AustraliaI hope that number is never reached. The Aussie dollar currently sits at .62 usd. Even the Singapore dollar is now worth significantly more than the Aussie. It never used to be. Real inflation is higher than in the uk. And aside from mining, agriculture and a bit of tourism we produce nothing here. Australia is fast becoming a failed state.

@Bonnie-Lewis-Australia that makes me really happy. I think we've got it pretty good here. Beautiful country, laidback lifestyle and a society that (for the most part) cares about each other. Not a bad place to be all things considered.
Sounds like Australia was lucky to get you as well
Thanks for your comment Anne-hope you enjoyed the video 🙏🏼😀
I'm shocked that I have taken this life for granted. This really is just every day for us.
Thanks for your comment and yes I can see it’s everyday life for people who’ve lived here all their life 😀
I'm glad you have settled so well in AU.
Enjoy your retirement and holiday in the uk - it is a great place too
5:32 - Queesncliff Beach - my favourite beach 😀
Thanks for your comment and yes we totally agree - Manly is like being on an island - live the walk to Shelley Beach and the boat house there 😀
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 🎉🎊🎄🎁
Thank you so much for your kind wishes - we wish you the same! 😀
Glad you guys are enjoying yourselves :)
Thanks Peter yes we are lucky to be here 🙏🏼
This video makes me realise how lucky I was to be born in Sydney and raised in a beachside suburb. I do take it for granted sometimes.
Yes I’m sure Australian natives go elsewhere and see contrasts the locals don’t see -
But we are amazed at how many people don’t like it here and think it will be better “overseas “

Thanks so much Louise - this has been our most popular video on the first day ever so we are grateful for your support 🙏🏼
And we welcome all and more of our Uk cousins at any time.
Thanks Freddy - I have to say the people here is one if the biggest factors in why we live here - from day 1 we’ve met lovely people- not to say people aren’t friendly in the UK but there’s no formality here - people are just so genuine
@ you’re welcome. Sending love from Turramurra.
My Grandmothers family came here from Scotland many generations ago. They were Campbell’s 😬
God bless
I watched your video as a new subscriber to your channel. I am an English migrant in Sydney. I don’t see it the way you do, I wish I did. I came as a 16 year old obviously not by my decision. After 43 years here (stayed for Family) I honestly can say I don’t like it for lots of reasons . I would love to go back to my nice cold , dreary England I just adore it. Going next Christmas to have a lovely Cold time and can’t wait.
Hi Catherine thanks so much for your comment and Australia is not for everyone. We have Freinds who also hate the heat - we aren’t saying it’s awful in the uk as it is an amazing place but for us we prefer Australia- but why take a trip back there to see if you want to live there ?
Your about to get your mind changed....

WHAT A GREAT VIDEO, I WANT TO LIVE THERE. BY BY SCOTLAND

sunrise outskirts of Sydney in the bush....Kookaburras before dawn, then a couple of Sulphur Cockatoos, Rainbow Lorikeets and a plethora of other birds...
That ls for your very poetic comment 🙏🏼
Welcome!
Thank you 🙏🏼
That was so nice.
Thanks Roger ! Really glad you liked it - we are amazed at the reaction this video has had 🙏🏼😀
Thanks for your comment George . Yes we know what you mean about compactness but our life style is better here but everyone is different 😀
Welcome to Australia. A plus for the Scots, Woolworths usually stocks Tunnock's Tea Cakes and Irn Bru😄
Thanks for your comment - yes we’ve discovered. Them and their wafer biscuits !😀
Yeah. Even the chest cold's and allergies are better in Aust. I agree, Darn O'Murphys' is great place to spend some money. ❤❤❤❤
Yes our life is better in Australia although we still have a soft spot for the UK🙏🏼
Thanks for your comment y David- having the contrast of the cold will make it feel that much warmer . 🌞
Loved your video - very interesting. I'm aussie born and don't like the heat at all
Thanks for your comment - yes when it’s too hot it’s nice to stay in!😀
You should make a day to come to Bundeena!

A great video.
Thanks Joan wow it’s so taken off ! We just wanted to make an honest video and we could have listed many more reasons and yes some .5s but with TH-cam you have to be authentic or people see through it
We are all different.
Thanks fit your comment and totally agree - we are all different and someone’s hell is another’s heaven- but this is just how we feel - but we know many people who have gone back to the uk - all good
Thanks for your comment - we understand it's not for everyone but we're happy it is for us 😀
@ I think, for most people, Australia is definitely the best choice.
Quiet a few shots of Port Macquarie there, fantastic spot and a great spot to raise a family.
Yes agreed it’s beautiful there and so many people moving there I gather
Nice

I think we may need to keep it more of a secret. 🙂
Ha ha but I think the secret is long out of the bag !
My granny came from Glasgow and moved to Lithgow because it reminded her of home, Have you been to Lithgow in winter?
Thanks for your comment Barry . No we haven’t bee. To Lithgow at all - I imagine it’s quite cold ?
I hope that one day you will get a southern rock lobster (Vic, Tassie and SA, and the WA ones are good too!
Thanks for your comment- we will have to try it- it’s funny as a lot of people in the uk just aren’t into sea food apart from fish and chips 😀
We were 10 pound poms in 1963. I went back to Aberdeen in 1980 and hated it. Went to England in 2017 and skipped Scotland. Perth WA is the best place to live. 😁👍 EDIT: We have 41 deg tomorrow 23.12.2024. Beautiful.
Thanks for your comment! Yes lots of people tell us Perth is beautiful 🤩
After a recent visit to London I can honestly say the UK has fallen. It’s a complete basket case. I will never return.
Hi Brad - thanks for your comment . That’s a Shame -
I'm a Brit living in QLD, and I agree, England is not recognizable anymore.
As an Aussie, I don’t care about the weather in UK, its history and beauty negates the cold.
Thanks for your comment- yes we love the uk too and Australia is not for everyone- wherever you feel happy that’s all that matters 😀
Clearly you haven’t been there lately. A complete basket case. 😮
We just love it
Always thought a lot went back because of missing family
Hence the ping pong poms.
@@WiFiWombat love that !

Light rail to Coogee?

Once more a great video. Cheers

Thanks so much for your comment and good point - we were told that when we arrived- Perth is so popular and a lot of people are moving there
I think Honolulu is more remote.

I hope you're joking. And think where your family originally came from .
Thanks for your comment - we have friends in Brisbane ( why is it called Bris Vegas? ) and they flaunt their heat whilst we are cold in Sydney !🌞

Thanks for your comment Ross and yes I’ve heard that too- we have good friends in Brisbane and go there quite a bit - Perth we have yet to go to but we always hear glowing reports and it’s close to Margaret River and Fremantle- but I think you won’t go far wrong whichever city you choose - we live Melbourne too😀
Didn't Adelaide get voted as the best city to live in last year?
Melbourne has been voted the most liveable city in the world several times in the past, and even if it hasn't had that distinction in recent years, it is still a great place to live😊😊😊
But Australian trees and grasses are not as green as Scotland or other European countries. Secondly Australia is a home of lots of hazardous animals. Right?

I disagree, Sydney is like a rat race, and you have massive house prices if you want to be at the beach as you showed in your video, multi million houses, so you have to move along way out of Sydney to buy a house. I’ve lived in Perth for over 40 years and it smashes Sydney for sure. I live a 2 minute drive to the coastline which is unbeatable and the beaches are so clean and massive. Perth used to be considered a sleepy city, not any more.

Cleanskins aren't common now. The industry changed so less over production now.
Now 'skin' is used to sell tools to tradies

It is lovely that all you immigrants love Australia so much, but you are destroying what was once the most affordable livable countries in the world, it now isn't, it has become an unaffordable nightmare now for the Australians.
What rubbish
Thanks for your comment -
I couldn’t disagree more.
All Europeans are immigrants to Australia.
what????
We are full, you need to go back to the UK
Ha ha I think the capacity I’ve seen on Australia on about 35 million but I assure you we live this country and have contributed as much as we can 😀
Oh that's charming! I bet you are great company at the pub.
@@Bonnie-Lewis-AustraliaI hope that number is never reached. The Aussie dollar currently sits at .62 usd. Even the Singapore dollar is now worth significantly more than the Aussie.
