That looks pretty sick! Nice craftsmanship but I would have somehow sharpened the ends of the rebar into sharp points so that the hammer will bite into the enemy's armour to deliver the full impact. Also the real purpose of the flanges on the sides is to hold the hammerhead more firmly onto the handle. Your flanges are purely decorative and don't attatch the hammerhead to the handle at all leaving the basic weld to do the job of holding it together. I would have embedded the flanges among the rebar with a few welds and then attach them to the handle add more support.

The whole hammer is dependent on that one particular handle weld joint. Instead, a hole should have been drilled to the handle diameter, handle inserted in the hole and welded for better longevity
It will dent and pit if you hit harder materials with it. It'd be easy enough to weld some stronger (4140, etc) plates to each end. That'll make it last for a lifetime.
Watching the video through and reaching the part you were talking about, the amount of filing he did I think was just to get rid of squished metal so he can actually fit a new handle in. I doubt it messed with the friction fit of the head at all
