      Did you watch the video? He mentions that the audience is anticipating that Cavill’s character is bad, so instead of making the twist the reveal that he is John Lark, he makes the twist of how IMF tricks him into revealing his identity. Watch that scene. The reveal of who he is is so casual that it is clear McQuarrie is not thinking he surprised anyone. The twist is when Lark realizes that he has been deceived into revealing his identity to the authorities. That’s a clever move by a smart writer.

    You want another thing that make the mask twist even more brillant ?
    If you watch the last 3 Mission Impossibles... their is a secret Running Gag with Benji who REALLY want to put a mask. In Ghost Protocol, he's so exciting by the idea of using a Mask when they talk about it when they made up their plan in Dubaie... but the mask machine dosen't work, so he missed that one. And in Rogue Nation, he again planed to use a Mask to infiltrate the CIA base, but here's too, he dosen't get it. So it's make it even more satisfying to see him finally puting a mask.

      What I liked is how this twist was also used by the bad guys in London as a rhyme:

    Great analysis. What I found great about the movie myself is how imperfect the action scenes were. There was always something going wrong both for Ethan and for the bad guys. Motors not starting, gun empty, miscommunication between Ethan and Benji, the chaotic fight in the bathroom, missing the cargo dump on the helicopter. It upped the tension and made it all more relatable as we'd all stumble our way through such things. my favorite one is probably Ethan climbing into the helicopter and then be like "Okaaaay.... how the fuck does this thing work?"

    The cop scene literally made me say "YES!" out loud and raise my fist when Ethan decides to save her. Truly a perfect scene in a modern-day masterpiece. You'd genuinely have to be wearing blinders, IMO, if you were to think that this film wasn't something special. It's shockingly phenomenal in every way. And that damn helicopter chase at the end... just wow. I really wish I caught this movie in IMAX because that helicopter chase alone would have made it worth the price of admission. I'm kinda hoping this gets some Oscar love come awards season because, if Mad Max: Fury Road was anything to go by, this is a shoe-in for a ton of big categories.

      I think it's hard to overlook the fact that it was completely expected, at least for me, that he would save the cop. To me, that scene lacked unpredictability at the end. As soon as I saw her when the doors opened, I knew she was both in trouble and that Ethan wouldn't kill her or let her die. So while the bad guys showing up and shooting her was an unexpected twist, the scene played out in a predictable way IMO.

    Personally I thought the climactic shot was the absolute best part of the movie, the one right after everyone cuts the wires and as Ethan pulls the defuser pin. It's a fantastic twist because the choice to cut to a white screen could mean failure or success in equal measure. They could do a cliche fade-in to a hospital ward, as they do shortly afterwards, to signify success, or it could pan out to show the nuclear explosion taking shape after the initial "flash," signifying failure. This is the first split path we come to; the white screen.
    The shot after this is even better, in that it doesn't resolve the mystery at all. We don't see a hospital ward or anything signifying success; in fact, it looks a hell of a lot like the flash from a nuclear explosion. The brightness dims a bit as the shot fully emerges, but we can't really be sure if the explosion has gone off as it's so brief. This is the second split path; the bright light.
    Finally, the shot after this is of Ethan hanging on the cliff. We're still not entirely sure whether or not he's succeeded, whether or not the bomb has gone off. His expression, as a matter of fact, is almost despondent, like he's failed, but we see it from far away so we can't be sure. We still don't know. We've come to a third split path.
    Then, the payoff. He spits out the firing pin (a genius detail, as he wouldn't have been able to pull it out with one hand and he couldn't use his other hand as he was hanging onto the cliff using it) and drops the defuser, and we know that he made it in time. We see Benji and Ilsa safe and not disintegrated shortly afterwards, to clear up any lingering confusion, as well as the bombs ejecting their unspent plutonium. An absolutely fantastic climax, and even more impressive is the fact that all of the above happens in the span of ten seconds.

    The French cop scene was also amazing because it subverted the expectation that Hunt would be forced to follow through with killing an officer, as he was in the mental breakdown preceding the extraction. By providing an alternative structure prior to the extraction the director was able to disrupt expectation during the ramming scene, extend tension via the motorcycle not starting scene, provide faux relief during the scene where Hunt is in the boat with team, reignite tension during the officer and gang shooting scene, provide expectation fulfilled through gangster killing officer scene which would provide a break in character regarding lived/followed through values for Hunt; however, Hunt "chose" to risk the end result to fulfill his established values and succeed in preserving the cop and his cover. I liked this scene so much it sparked my first TH-cam comment ever :)

      That's the exact opposite. We know what will happened because it's an hollywood(ian) movie, and because its Tom Cruise. It make this scene very artificial and lame because it creates a fake emotionnal build up. The worst is actually the intention, because it's directed like there is really different possible endings when even a 14 years old know there is not (unlike hollywood TV drama where moral choices can really leed to different path)
      Choices, especially moral ones, doesn't work in hollywood cinema. On the contrary, the emotion rises when there is an absence of choices, when things seems unavoidable. The best exemple is the ending of Toy Story 3. Is works because Pixar is so talented but also because it seems that there is no escape. They're advancing in one direction in a corridor (literally). No choice possible, they have to subish fate. And that's the most emotionnal scene in hollywood action history in a very long time.

    What I really love about that French cop scene is that the camera and the facial expressions and body language of the cast tells you everything about what they're thinking and what is possibly about to unfold. Then unexpected shifts occur and that body language shows their surprise, then you watch them try to figure out what move to make. It tells us a lot about the characters without them saying anything. For instance, we knew that if the scene had gone on without any interruptions, Cavill's character would have tried to kill the cop. But we also know that Hunt was willing to kill to stop the cop from being murdered, so we can assume the two main characters would have found themselves at odds, thereby foreshadowing later scenes in the movie.
    It's a shame that MI:Fallout carries the stigma of being the 6th movie in a long series of blockbusters of varying quality. I find myself shying away from telling people that I think it's the best movie I've seen this year.

The great thing about MI:Fallout is the fact that the story is so convoluted with so many different players in the game yet they were able to weave a story and action around all of this that actually makes sense. I also agree with you about the cop rescue scene being the best written. It reveals that Ethan is not only an active protagonist, but an emotional one. And it reiterates Ethan's moral boundaries. I think the one character that wasn't needed in the whole thing was Alec Baldwin. We didn't need him to show up and verbally extrapolate Ethan's moral boundaries. I also agree with Theman Joe below. The mustache was totally worth it.

    Another good scene that follows most of these tropes is Hunts persuit of Walker. a) it has a metaphorical time bomb in that Hunt has to catch Walker in order to essentially "stop his plan" (simplified beyond belief) which already builds a good amount of tension. b) when the twist is revealed that Walker essentially controls Julias life (again stupidly oversimplifed) it shocks the viewer and then adds their own thought on to the upcoming, c) choice. Hunt now has to choose between pursuing Walker and or saving Julia, and ultimately he does further pursue him but he gets away which even further adds to stakes at hand and the metaphorical/literal time bomb (even though Julia lives regardless). This whole scene is also showing Hunt`s activeness in which (literally) he just runs and the audience soaks up very minuite of it and (probaubly) doesnt get bored.

      It seemed fishy from the start but I was 100% sure it was faked when Ethan and Luther started playing "good cop, bad cop". Ethan's not the type to get angry like that and let go of his emotions, EVEN if those bombs went off. The only thing I was wrong about is I thought they got Wolf Blitzer (as in, the real one in the film universe) to help them (they are a government agency after all), then Benji pulled off the Blitzer mask and I was like "oh yeah they have those masks.." ...but wait, that still means they had to scan Blitzer's face to be able to produce a mask.. hm.

      I haven't seen the TV series, or if I had, I don't remember them at all. As viewer who's really only seen the other MI movies, it was still pretty obvious that scene was a set up. The movies haven't led me to believe that they would make one where Hunt has to face a scenario/consequences where he's failed to THAT extent. I would definitely have been more surprised if that news report turned out to be real. Same with the scene playing out the scenario where Hunt participates in ambushing and actively killing all those police officers. As soon as a few innocent police got shot, I got a feeling that this was some kind of thought playing out, and not something actually happening. The character of Hunt, as we've been specifically told, is one that wouldn't allow for trading of those lives, so it's hard for the audience to believe Hunt would not only allow something like that to happen, but also participate in it.
      For me, the twist I didn't see coming was the Lane -> Benji reveal. I was wondering why Hunt wasn't immediately on Walker when Hunt got accused of being Lark, but really didn't expect a turnaround to happen so quickly.

    The fight scene in the bathroom was quite intense, and different form what hollywood usually offers (super humans, super fighters, invencible women), also has some twist, great action and theme (in the form of the different plan/intentions of the "good" characters)

  • @stripey566
    @stripey566 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Part of the reason the film feels convoluted is that a great many scenes were cut to shorten Fallout (which still turned out pretty long). For example, the guys attacking Hunt and White Widow in the bar were actually hired by her brother to kill him (cause he thought the deal was fishy), and the explanation for the fakeout between Benji and Lane was also removed.
    Don't take this as a defense of the plot though, because you can still tell it's constructed to string along set pieces without breaking the audience's immersion.

    The realism of actually making the scenes, the fear and challenges that protagonists feel and show through emotions are part of the sucess of this movie, because things are really happening. For example the bathroom scene, is harsh, cruel, brutal, explendid, without over realiance on cgi or even using it, its the argumentation, the feeling what makes this movie a jewel.

      Lorne Balfe's best work so far, topping even his work on MW2. Check out the track "Cutting On One" in the score and listen to the very end. One of the best tracks ever. And also check out "Stairs & Rooftops". That's my routine jogging music now -- never ran faster in my life.

    • @kevrulz06
      @kevrulz06 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Filmento Well, I just finished listening to all 26 main tracks (not the bonus ones). I wasn't super impressed by the score, except for "Stairs & Rooftops" and "The Syndicate". Everything else kinda sounded the same. Maybe this score is not really best listened to independent of the film. I've been listening to a lot of the scores for DC films, and they're just really up there with the best. Granted, Hans Zimmer did like 90% of them, but he's the best and his scores sound like it. The one thing I noticed from most DC films compared to the soundtrack for M:I:F is that I can recall the scenes in my mind of the DC films as the score is playing. If the title didn't give it away I couldn't recall what scene each piece of music came from with M:I. People can say what they want, but 90% of the time, DC's films have memorable scores. I can only hope Rupert Gregson Williams did a fantastic job with Aquaman. Plus, Zimmer is coming back to DC's films with Wonder Woman 1984. I think they should have swapped them. Since Williams' score for WW is so darn great, let him do 1984, and let Zimmer do Aquaman. Could you imagine a Zimmer score for Aquaman?!

    • @Filmento
      @Filmento  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fair play. Have you listened to Giacchino's MI scores? The third one and Ghost Protocol. I always thought his work was the best in the franchise, but to me Balfe's take gets very close, if not beyond. There's just so much emotion tied to these Fallout tracks, at least to my ears.
      Agree on Zimmer though. Man of Steel and BvS were fantastic scores.

      @@sheikhheisen That whole rooftop chase scene with him running full blast was pure adrenaline! Wasn't that the scene where he broke his ankle? Something that struck me about the new show the Madalorian is how the end of the first episode used this formula. It even had a big reveal, and had the antagonist character be someone the audience actually likes. This is where understanding the tropes can allow you to really perfect a story instead of trying to go the current Hollywood route of subverting them for cheap laughs.
