This is actually quite believable. If the world does end and a few people randomly manages to survive that, it's most likely they're not going to have Bear Grylls survivor skills and probably muck about until they accidentally die.

The last 2 people in a city with no obstacles like zombies or other survivors should have had a much easier time surviving. What a crock of shit, I understand untreated depression can be unbearable yet if you truly love someone and want their best interest.... you do not leave them to fend alone. I've always found that act to be completely selfish and cowardly. She made this big deal out of him hurting himself at the grocery store yet she's willing to kill herself because they are stuck in Iceland far away from home. Isolation in itself can drive someone mad, they could have started a family and continued to look for survivors and studied how to work a boat that could take them back to the U.S. There are always better options. (I won't keep ranting but my gut feeling by the end was that this storyline was complete and utter hogwash. A way to provoke anger and get you to try to sympathize with two very unlikeable characters.)

If 3 people survived in Iceland, then that statistically suggests around 62,000 people are alive elsewhere in the world. 4,000 to 5,000 of them would be in North America. So look around for a short-wave radio set and some batteries to operate it, figure it out, and start making some contacts. Not all those people are going to be idiots, after all. Then get to the harbor, pick out a good looking deep-sea fishing boat, figure out how to operate it, fuel it all the way up and come summer, chance a voyage for Newfoundland, it's only about 1,000 miles away. Once there, reconnect and rebuild. Or head to the Eurasian-African land mass, which is only about 600 miles away and would statistically expect to have around 51,000 humans still around and alive. Boats have self-contained electrical systems and GPS would probably be reliable for a year or so, so it wouldn't really be that difficult.
Their biggest mistake was not operating a shortwave radio. That would be the "last" surviving method of global communications. My Grundig YB-400 SWR is always packed in my catastrophe "go-bag".

You can't repopulate with 2 people. No isolated group smaller than 300 people has managed to survive more than 100 years. The genetic limit (inbreeding) is 50-160 individuals, but you need more than that because people have accidents and get sick or injured or infertile or die, droughts and famines happen etc. The limit for population growth, i.e. actual repopulation, is 350-500 people. The ranges mean the following: if you measure survival/repopulation as "group managed to survive/grow for 100 years", then the smaller number is valid. If you measure survival/growth as "group managed to survive/grow 'forever'" -> more than 40 generations, then it's the larger number of people that you need.

@@Zenikai_ This is gonna be lengthy, sorry ^^ There's three problems in inbreeding I'm aware of (there could be more, I'm a scientist, but not a biologist): 1) Recessive genes: Let's say I carry one copy of a "bad" recessive gene. "Recessive" means, the bad effect of that gene only happens for people who carry two copies of it. If I "pair" with someone who doesn't carry that "bad" gene himself, there is 0% chance any of our kids will get the unfortunate double-combo. However, if they inbreed, there's already a 25% chance for their kids to have the double-combo. If I "pair" with someone who also carries one copy of that "bad" gene, that 25% chance will already occur among the first generation of kids. What those 25% mean depends on what the "badness" of the gene is - if it's deadly in some form, it means each generation loses 25% of offspring. But it could also manifest as some kind of disability or immunodeficiency or infertility etc. Either way, that gene will keep on perpetuating, and so will the 25% chance of a double-combo for any following generation. It won't just "go away" - it will stay. Recessive "bad" genes aren't a big problem in large populations. We all carry at least one if not more, but because we all carry different ones and each specific type is rare, the odds of by chance pairing up with someone who has the exakt same bad variant are very low. And if that happens and offspring is lost as a result, it doesn't make much difference for an overall population of thousands, millions of people. That drastically changes for inbreeding: the chances that your partner carries the exact same defects as you are high, and the scenario in the movie .. when you're two parents, and you got four kids and then one dies, in terms of numbers that's a way worse impact than in a population of millions. 2) Mutations occur randomly, and they basically work along the same principles like the "bad" gene. If I get a mutation, there's practically zero chance my partner will randomly get the exactly same mutation. However, there is still a 50% chance I'll pass that mutation on to the kids, which again leads to a 25% chance that their kids will receive a double-combo of that mutation. Not only that, but mutations are also something that accumulates across generations. Mutations can be good, but are likely bad. As before: in a large population a few human losses due to bad mutations aren't much of an impact .. but .. in a tribe-sized inbreeding group this can have a significant bad impact. 3) Shrinking gene pool. Reproduction goes along with recombination: a more-or-less randomly selected half of the man's genetic material goes into the kid, and half of the woman's. This means, if two people have only one kid, only half of the parent's' gene pool gets passed on from one generation to the next, and half of the genepool is lost forever. The solution to that problem seems easy: make more children. However, because of the sort-of random recombination, there is no guarantee that the second kid will get all the genetic material that "was missed when making the first kid". By the maths of it, two people could produce kids throughout their entire lifetime - they still wouldn't be able to pass on 100% of their gene pool to the next generation. Without inbreeding, this isn't a problem: for my kid every "loss" from my gene pool is replaced by a "gain" from the dad's gene pool. But that loss becomes an actual loss when inbreeding. Let's say I have two kids who .. pair .. then the loss happens, but it's not replaced with something "new", because both kids share the same parents. Thus, in inbreeding the gene pool shrinks and shrinks from generation to generation. And the genetic variance lost can be anything, could be immunities to diseases and parasites, could be IQ or physical fitness, could be enzymes that help digest food or whatever. This becomes worse and worse with each generation of inbreeding. And while yes, inbreeding in cousins isn't "as bad" - that only goes if those cousins have one parent from outside of the family tree. If those cousins have parents who both stem from the same family tree as you, then that's not much of an improvement over inbreeding with a sibling. In your scenario, i.e. two pairs of initial parents, that'd only delay the problem by a few generations. Finally, the human species is still alive, because we started out as primates. There were never "just two" of us to populate. The comment is already long enough, so I won't go into detail. But check out "mitochondrial Eve" and "Y-chromosomal adam". There's certain genetic material with which we can track, how humanity evolved. We knew from the get-go, via evolutionary process, that inbreedign is bad - this implicit knowledge later became a societal taboo for a reason. There were a couple of Eves and a couple of Adams, they all survived in larger groups. There were many incidents of small populations gettign isolated - and from their remains / ended lines we know historically, what the minimum viable population is for humans.

Her heavy dependence on religion for guidance, clearly shows a complete lack of rational fortitude, which is confirmed, along with her narcissism, by her later suicide. This is DEFINITELY not the kind of person you want by your side, especially under these circumstances!!! If I were making a part two to this movie, I'd dive deeper into what caused this calamity. & just like they came across that old man who Jenai didn't want to properly bury, perhaps Riley will meet someone, & his life will become a million times better, after all, ANYONE is better than Jenai!!! 😂

The last 2 people in a city with no obstacles like zombies or other survivors should have had a much easier time surviving. Food and water should be the least of their concerns, break into every house and search the pantries for bottled water and canned goods. Take and purify the water found in water heating tanks. I've always found that act to be completely selfish and cowardly. She made this big deal out of him hurting himself at the grocery store yet she's willing to kill herself because they are stuck in Iceland far away from home. Isolation in itself can drive someone mad, they could have started a family and continued to look for survivors and studied how to work a boat that could take them back to the U.S. There are always better options.
(I won't keep ranting but my gut feeling by the end was that this storyline was complete and utter hogwash. A way to provoke anger and get you to try to sympathize with two very unlikeable characters.)

Movie ending is pretty honest. Its can be interpreted as a metaphor for how your inner sides, emotional (Jenai) and pragmatic (Riley) arguing during existential crisis

It would work well, assuming no child birth complications, for the kids. After that inbreeding defects would be a major problem.
This couple needs to get their heads in the game. If 3 people survived in Iceland, then that statistically suggests around 62,000 people are alive elsewhere in the world. 4,000 to 5,000 of them would be in North America. So look around for a short-wave radio set and some batteries to operate it, figure it out, and start making some contacts. Not all those people are going to be idiots, after all. Then get to the harbor, pick out a good looking deep-sea fishing boat, figure out how to operate it, fuel it all the way up and come summer, chance a voyage for Newfoundland, it's only about 1,000 miles away. Once there, reconnect and rebuild. Or head to the Eurasian-African land mass, which is only about 600 miles away and would statistically expect to have around 51,000 humans still around and alive. Boats have self-contained electrical systems and GPS would probably be reliable for a year or so, so it wouldn't really be that difficult.

Jenai is selfish, she ended things for herself too early, leaving her boyfriend alone. Jenai had not considered that she maybe the last woman on Earth, that she and her boyfriend maybe the only hope for the continued survival of the Human Race. Jenai and Riley could’ve gave birth to multiple offsprings and contribute in the repopulation of the Human race, rather slowly.
You can't repopulate with 2 people. No isolated group smaller than 300 people has managed to survive more than 100 years. The genetic limit (inbreeding) is 50-160 individuals, but you need more than that because people have accidents and get sick or injured or infertile or die, droughts and famines happen etc. The limit for population growth, i.e. actual repopulation, is 350-500 people.
The ranges mean the following: if you measure survival/repopulation as "group managed to survive/grow for 100 years", then the smaller number is valid. If you measure survival/growth as "group managed to survive/grow 'forever'" -> more than 40 generations, then it's the larger number of people that you need.
@@augustaseptemberova5664 to my knowledge, inbreeding (usually) doesnt have an effect until the 3rd or 4th generation. by that point you have 2nd or even 3rd cousins. and mutations are slim. then another 3 or 4 generations, the defects are almost none. so how would it not be possible if you force then kids to marry a 2nd or 3rd cousin? Just want to point out, my knowledge is purely off the top of my head. im curious how this would work to make the human race still be alive. also. couldn't the 2 kids go off and start a family and 2 other kids do the same. then when defects start to happen, they rejoin to mix genetics?

There's three problems in inbreeding I'm aware of (there could be more, I'm a scientist, but not a biologist):
1) Recessive genes: Let's say I carry one copy of a "bad" recessive gene. "Recessive" means, the bad effect of that gene only happens for people who carry two copies of it.
If I "pair" with someone who doesn't carry that "bad" gene himself, there is 0% chance any of our kids will get the unfortunate double-combo. However, if they inbreed, there's already a 25% chance for their kids to have the double-combo. If I "pair" with someone who also carries one copy of that "bad" gene, that 25% chance will already occur among the first generation of kids. What those 25% mean depends on what the "badness" of the gene is - if it's deadly in some form, it means each generation loses 25% of offspring. But it could also manifest as some kind of disability or immunodeficiency or infertility etc. Either way, that gene will keep on perpetuating, and so will the 25% chance of a double-combo for any following generation. It won't just "go away" - it will stay.
Recessive "bad" genes aren't a big problem in large populations. We all carry at least one if not more, but because we all carry different ones and each specific type is rare, the odds of by chance pairing up with someone who has the exakt same bad variant are very low. And if that happens and offspring is lost as a result, it doesn't make much difference for an overall population of thousands, millions of people.
That drastically changes for inbreeding: the chances that your partner carries the exact same defects as you are high, and the scenario in the movie .. when you're two parents, and you got four kids and then one dies, in terms of numbers that's a way worse impact than in a population of millions.
2) Mutations occur randomly, and they basically work along the same principles like the "bad" gene. If I get a mutation, there's practically zero chance my partner will randomly get the exactly same mutation. However, there is still a 50% chance I'll pass that mutation on to the kids, which again leads to a 25% chance that their kids will receive a double-combo of that mutation. Not only that, but mutations are also something that accumulates across generations.
Mutations can be good, but are likely bad. As before: in a large population a few human losses due to bad mutations aren't much of an impact .. but .. in a tribe-sized inbreeding group this can have a significant bad impact.
3) Shrinking gene pool. Reproduction goes along with recombination: a more-or-less randomly selected half of the man's genetic material goes into the kid, and half of the woman's. This means, if two people have only one kid, only half of the parent's' gene pool gets passed on from one generation to the next, and half of the genepool is lost forever.
The solution to that problem seems easy: make more children. However, because of the sort-of random recombination, there is no guarantee that the second kid will get all the genetic material that "was missed when making the first kid". By the maths of it, two people could produce kids throughout their entire lifetime - they still wouldn't be able to pass on 100% of their gene pool to the next generation.
Without inbreeding, this isn't a problem: for my kid every "loss" from my gene pool is replaced by a "gain" from the dad's gene pool.
But that loss becomes an actual loss when inbreeding. Let's say I have two kids who .. pair .. then the loss happens, but it's not replaced with something "new", because both kids share the same parents. Thus, in inbreeding the gene pool shrinks and shrinks from generation to generation. And the genetic variance lost can be anything, could be immunities to diseases and parasites, could be IQ or physical fitness, could be enzymes that help digest food or whatever. This becomes worse and worse with each generation of inbreeding.
And while yes, inbreeding in cousins isn't "as bad" - that only goes if those cousins have one parent from outside of the family tree. If those cousins have parents who both stem from the same family tree as you, then that's not much of an improvement over inbreeding with a sibling. In your scenario, i.e. two pairs of initial parents, that'd only delay the problem by a few generations.
Finally, the human species is still alive, because we started out as primates. There were never "just two" of us to populate. The comment is already long enough, so I won't go into detail. But check out "mitochondrial Eve" and "Y-chromosomal adam". There's certain genetic material with which we can track, how humanity evolved. We knew from the get-go, via evolutionary process, that inbreedign is bad - this implicit knowledge later became a societal taboo for a reason. There were a couple of Eves and a couple of Adams, they all survived in larger groups. There were many incidents of small populations gettign isolated - and from their remains / ended lines we know historically, what the minimum viable population is for humans.

She's pretty, sexy, & seemingly loving, that is, until you get to know her, that's when you realize, she fucked up in the head.
She goes from psychological highs to lows, like someone with bipolar disorder.
& at one point, she takes off & leaves him abandoned, simply because she was upset, possibly putting his life in danger, that's not a very reliable partner, but rather a narcissist, who apparently only cares about herself.
Her heavy dependence on religion for guidance, clearly shows a complete lack of rational fortitude, which is confirmed, along with her narcissism, by her later suicide.
This is DEFINITELY not the kind of person you want by your side, especially under these circumstances!!!
If I were making a part two to this movie, I'd dive deeper into what caused this calamity.
