Merlin Sheldrake eats mushrooms sprouting from his book, Entangled Life

  • Fungi make mushrooms, but first they must unmake something else. In this video, I eat oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus) that have sprouted from my book, Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds, & Shape Our Futures. Now Pleurotus has eaten Entangled Life, I can eat the Pleurotus - and so eat my words.
    Initially I was flattered that Pleurotus had so eagerly devoured the book, but on reflection I'm not sure that I can interpret their behaviour as a vote of confidence. Pleurotus have famously diverse tastes and are able to eat an astonishing variety of things, from crude oil, to used cigarette butts, to glyphosate - they can even trap and consume worms when they need to.
    The mushrooms were delicious: I couldn't taste any off notes, which suggests that the fungus had fully metabolised the text.
    The book was soaked in boiling water. The fungus was introduced to the book in the form of myceliated grain and placed in a sealed plastic bag in the dark. After a couple of weeks, when the mycelium had grown, I removed the bag, placed the book in the light, and kept it moist with a water spritzer while it fruited over the course of about five days. Many thanks to my friends at Grocycle.com who inoculated and incubated the books.
    Find out more about Entangled Life at merlinsheldrake.com.

      Naming them is one thing; helping them grow into their names is where the real power lies. I’ve been following their dad, Rupert, since the ‘80s. That he has amazing children is no surprise.

      He said his parents named him Merlin after the fish, not the magician

    • @humanbeing-_-_-
      @humanbeing-_-_- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      @@gkdsama his father hung with Terence McKenna and came up with the theory of morphic resonance, and his mom practices an incredibly fascinating yet unusual form of therapy and developed a new method of overtone singing which sounds like singing two notes at once. Also his brother’s name is Cosmo. Perhaps he *was* named after a fish, but there is definitely a whole lot of magic going on, and I would imagine The Merlin would be quite proud of his studies.

    Hi Merlin, just thought I’d write you a little thank you note if you were to ever read this. I’m reading Entangled Life at the moment and it is just mind blowing. The passion with which you write and the endlessly awe inspiring things that you describe is something I wake up excited by every day!
    Mushrooms (foraged Liberty caps to be specific) saved my life 12 years ago, rescuing me from depression and setting me back on the right path, whilst triggering a huge amount of creative energy for my music! I’m now a professional musician. They opened my eyes to the real world, that there is one consciousness. I’d heard your Dad talk about these things with Terrence McKenna before but experiencing it for myself changed me forever.
    I must say, mushrooms seem to have a way of coming into your life when you need them most. I found Liberty caps again this year for the first time in years. And loads of them! I also began foraging for other mushrooms this year finding some incredible things! My best was a metre wide hen of the woods! It made about ten delicious meals/stocks and broths.
    The point is mushrooms are continuing to save my life. I’ve lost my job as a musician this year due to COVID and had to move back in with my parents which as a 30 year old is quite demeaning. But having moved away from Brighton to Cornwall, I managed to forage and find all these incredible mushrooms, not least the Liberty caps which continue to pry open my third eye!
    Your writing, the writing and talks of your dad, even the music of your brother Cosmo (who I had the pleasure of meeting 5 or so years ago, when he was leading amazing choir sessions in Brighton, where he’d teach us incredible polyphony, I actually noticed you’d written about one of the pieces he taught us!) have been a source of great inspiration to me and you continue to bring me much joy and inspiration to this day! Thank you so much and all hail the mushroom 🍄♥️

    Absolutely fascinating. I thought to look up merlin here on 29 October after an interview he's just given on our ABC radio at 10:30 PM... I've needed a spell to process my thoughts after this video .He's got some quality that a Hollywood film producer could use ; am I right ? . I wasn't expecting it .
    Anybody watched that Seinfeld episode where Cramer invents a coffee table book that folds out to become a coffee table ? This fella has a book about mushrooms/fungi which can be converted to edible mushrooms after you've finished reading it ; conceivably it would be sold with a spore sachet inside the cover . A producer might figure him for a Dr who or Harry potter production maybe but there's other potential too. Gotta say I'm being reminded of Tiny Tim the ukele strumming singer of decades ago . He knows his stuff, the radio interview was about forty minutes and he was answering listener's questions .
