Thanks for your question. It is a best practice to ensure that the coefficient of the x-squared term is positive 1 before factoring the quadratic equation to find the roots. Right now, the coefficient of the x-squared term is -1. By dividing all of the terms by -1, we will end up with a leading coefficient of 1 for the x-squared term. Then we can confidently move forward with factoring. Hope this helps!

you divide by -1 because the x is negative and x is equal to 1, so -x is the same as -1
