Even though I am watching this because of school, I gotta appreciate the quality of this video, and how it explained globalization in 4 minutes, pretty cool!
Globalization Globalization is a widely discussed topic. It is, therefore, not all that easy to explain. As it´s such a complicated term in simple words . Let´s start from the beginning with a background to (1) globalization. Advances in technology such as (2) mobile phones, airplanes, telephones and the (3) Internet have made the growth of transport and communication networks possible. Amongst other things, this means that people and countries can exchange (4) information and goods more quickly and in a less complicated way. This process is called “Globalization”. Globalization comes from “Globe” and means the worldwide coming together of (5) countries and nations. Let´s look at an example. Companies used to manufacture products in the home countries just like the (6) companies “Profi-TV” and “Supercolor” who produced television in Country A. Their products are in direct competition with each other, but both companies pay the same salaries and (7) production costs. They have the same customers, use similar suppliers and sell televisions at similar (8) prices. In short, the same conditions apply to both companies. (so far so good) Due to (9) technical, cultural, and economic developments that have come about through globalization other companies which manufacture products under different conditions can now offer their products in Country A, too. That´s why a (10) company from country B, can sell televisions here, at a lower price, because they were produced for less. The local firms SuperColor and Profi-TV have to react to withstand the competition and so the world grows closer together and there is an active (11) exchange of goods between countries. More affordable products (12) are available for more people. However, not only does an exchange of products and economic goods take place, but also of services , knowledge, cultural good and even languages. All of these individual elements are closely linked and influence each other. But, where there is light, there is also shadow. Because of globalization and its intense exchange of goods,(13) people and the environment often suffer. If a company decides to move production to an economically disadvantaged country, people in industrialized countries lose their (14) jobs. At the same time, job opportunities open up to many locals in the economically disadvantaged countries. Many people in these countries work for very little(15) money in comparison to those in industrialized countries. Therefore, they often remain poor and more often than not, do not have sufficient insurance, social insurance or (16) health insurance cover. A further disadvantage of globalization is (17) ecological problems such as climate change. The use of airplanes, ships and lorries to transport goods over (18) international borders is constantly on the increase. This causes more carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere which, in turn, is the main cause of (19) global warming. Even national environmental standards are ignored. This is a further cost factor in the worldwide international site competition which should be kept as low as possible to be attractive for a company. There are, therefore, many sides to globalization which affect almost all (20) aspects of life causing me to think that the chain of positive and negative effects will continue to grow further. What´s important is to realize that globalization itself is neither good nor bad. It just depends how the people deal with all the new possibilities in the (21) future. 81
00:12 Globalization facilitated by technological advancements 00:38 Globalization promotes faster and simpler exchange of goods and information. 01:10 Globalization makes companies under the same conditions in various regions 01:40 Globalization leads to more affordable products and increased competition. 02:07 Globalization impacts goods, services, knowledge, and culture. 02:37 Globalization creates job opportunities but can lead to exploitation and lack of social benefits. 03:09 Increased transport for global trade contributes to global warming. 03:39 Globalization has both positive and negative effects. 2:15 I really like the comment "but, where there is light there is also shadow," as it brings awareness to the fact that not only globalization but other principles are not solely good or bad; but rather a mix of both.
It is very nice because I didn't get the meaning of globalization during my teacher was explaining. After watching the video, I got a clear definition of globalization . Thanks so much. It is such a good video
“When the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught, the last river poisoned, only then will you realize that one cannot eat money.” Quote of victims of a genocide nobody talks about…..
@Emi Woo It's a quote that has been used as a slogan for environmental organisations to protest against those that are ignoring climate change and its consequences. It's rumored to have been originated from a prophecy of the Cree, a tribe of American Indians. This however was never scientifically nor historically proven. The genocide he's talking about refers to the mass murders that have been committed on the indigenous population of America, especially during the time of colonization.
wonderful explanation thank you! I hadn't thought of globalization as being such a cause of social and environmental issues, had only considered the jobs/economic aspect when choosing to 'buy locally', we can all help the world by buying locally, reducing carbon use and maintaining social standards in our own areas.
Great video, thanks a lot. As a foreign language teacher, however, I have to remark that the video is quite fast in terms of presentation and succession. Middle school students might struggle to understand and follow..
Thank you so much for this video. I kid you not... i spent forever reading the textbook trying to understand this. It's such a simple concept but everything I was reading/watching overcomplicated it.
As we can see, the effect of Globalization has plenty of benefits for us, as well as some disadvantages. But our lives are better than before; there is no doubt about it, if Globalization didn't exist, we wouldn´t even be able to make cultural exchanges easily or be linked with other cultures across the world.
Globalization as established in my textbook "Perspectives" Chapter 12 refers to the increase pace and scope of interconnections worldwide. Globalization has been broken down into five terms. "Ethnoscape" which refers to the flow of people across boundaries. "technoscape" refers to the spreading of technology such as Samsum and Apple and many other comapanies selling worldwide despite peoples race and language. "Ideoscape" refers to the spreading of ideas. "Financescape refers to the flow of money across political borders. and lastly we have "Mediascape" wich is the spread of social media worldwide. although globalization can be looked out from another aspect either one or two aspects will include any of the mentioned terms.
the woman that is talking she really have a nice & fancy voice , her voice what kept me search for more videos in this channel ! i absolutely loved her
One of the biggest concern regarding globalization is Cultural Homogenization. People are saying countries with stronger economic might are influencing smaller countries with their pop culture content and turning them away from their native culture. They become influenced by values of foreign origin.
Why are companies able to move across boarders freely while workers have to stay in their home country? Wouldn't this create competition that just drives wages down and increases poverty? It seems like companies have more rights than people. If people also the right to move around to which countries had the best wages and standard of living wouldn't that drive competition for companies to pay more since no one would want to work for cheap labor. This reflects on how companies do not want to pay more for wages in 1st world countries so they move their work to the third world.
I somewhat agree with you. But here is the question, why do BP company in Iraq has lots of its workforce from 1st world countries "considering your assumption" to pay less for 2nd workforce? Kind of tricky to tell.
Oh thanks for you advice, it may works for me, but indeed, keep your advice for your self because you don't know me well so that you throw your personal suggestions on others, btw I don't need "another passport" that you think other are begging to get it. and don't forget that developed countries are financially relying on developing countries.
This is the philosophy of the EU. All that happens is that the citizens of the poor countries migrate to the richer countries, where the social programmes are better. It relieves the poorer country of the burden of providing for their own citizens and burdens the country where they have gone with new bodies to care for. The system appeals to the least qualified and poorest in a society, so these migrants rarely become productive workers that contribute to the welfare of their new country. They are only there for what they can get and will be home again when things look no worse there than in their new country. In other words, when they have dragged their new country down enough that they can't tell the difference between where they now are and what they left, they will be gone!!
felix fomme Globalisation has happened many times in history before and you know what happened everytime to these empires....they failed. This is an ideology sold by big business to avoid paying tax. All it does is further grow the divide between the super rich ceos including those wealthy who invest in the financial markets and joe public employee who earns a salary but doesn't actually benefit from capitalism
