    Love the book variety and the inclusion of all the things! It definitely warms my heart that you had awesome folks to spend the holidays with during the Sunday Pubs. :o) I started the new year finishing Legends & Lattes, and have since been reading some middle-grade books that are surprisingly deeply philosophical. I've not watched anything, but somehow found myself sucked into playing a crazy pressure washing simulator game that was oddly compelling in a way that made me feel deeply philosophical. ;o) Hope you are having an awesome January!

    Sounds like a great December! Our holidays were fantastic this year and I am glad the Sunday Pubs were such a success. I have only read Paul Auster's New York trilogy and I wasn't totally convinced. However I know lots of people who are huge fans of his books. Have a great 2024!

    • @MattonBooks

      Yeah Mike, The NY trilogy is what made a name for Auster, but that was a looong time ago, and his writing’s developed quite a bit since then. Not anywhere near ny favourite of his work either.

    Hello there! 😊
    Attack on Titan also never clicked for me. I tried to make it through the first season of the show, but i couldn't stand all that drama and teenage behavior! 😅
    So I ended up watching a "best of scenes" here on TH-cam.
    (Please don't kill me, Internet!)
    When it comes to games, snowrunner is definitely a love it or hate it thing. It helps when you're an off road car/truck fan. 😊
    I expect "Sea of Thieves" to be mentioned in the January update! 😁

    You know, you're halfway convincing me to read Moorcock, but I don't think I can't fit any more books into my plan this year, TBH! Paul Auster's Moon Palace looks like a thoughtful read, you know; those that you end up staring flatly at the wall and thinking--right up my alley. Regarding mangas, I DNF'ed Attack on Titan mostly due to lack of time, not because I didn't like it, so I may need to pick it up again! It does go into some interesting places and there are some huge twists down the road, but it's a long series, really. I picked up Dungeon Crawler Carl but it was not really what I expected of it.

I have tried manga few times since and just do not find anything that that hook me... I recently started One Piece... and I almost died of boredom... I DNF it and gave it to my nice. Ah sorry Carl didn’t work well for you, but I totally get it. Book 1 felt like a hybrid book/video game experience, and it was jarring for me having never read any lit rpg before. Maybe just because I’ve gotten older, and feel my mortality, I really don’t have time for “gets good in book 3” series any more, Ben. 😜 The whole litRPG thing still mystifies me a bit. The main thing that’s fun about video games for me - making choices - doesn’t exist at all in the books, and reading about someone clicking menus & opening loot boxes (the least fun part of games) is maybe good for a chuckle, but it’s kind of a one trick pony to me. 🤷🏻‍♂️ And like I said, the good parts of the book made me just wishing I was playing, not reading. 😆

    as someone whos read manga for most of my life, its interesting to me the criticisms you have of it since i find the over the topness and jarring comic relief to be something i also see in malazan and really enjoy. i wonder if its just the visual format that makes it more pronounced for people who are new to manga?
    agree with you about attack on titan though, like a lot of shonen manga i feel like the plot isnt as strong as it is selling a cast and feeling of adventure.
    also dungeon crawler carl sounds pretty boring from how you described it i have to agree. i think litrpgs would only work for me if the main character or the way the game works is just something that wouldnt work if you were playing it, otherwise yeah its like why wouldnt i just go play some final fantasy instead of reading this book lol!

    • @MattonBooks
      @MattonBooks  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah Paige, maybe shonen is just not my thing. As someone who knows manga much better than I do, and knows what I don’t like in some manga, what would you recommend?
      And yeah, the over the top & weird comic relief are primarily visual things to me. I’m a long time fan of comics, and a designer and very visual person, so the facial expressions and odd, out of place characters (like the short, fat dude who hires the vikings to attack the city in Vinland arc 1) just grate on me. And I say by contrast, there’s no over the top emotions in Malazan, and Erikson’s comic relief is very well integrated and never feels totally out of place.
      And DCC: my thoughts exactly. There is little in it that isn’t in, and much more fun to me in a video game. 🤷🏻‍♂️
