    Love the videos and I'm glad you got your van back! As a mechanic myself I think (I could be wrong) from what I heard when you were driving it, it idles a bit too high! I can't say what a normal RPM for that engine would be, but for most vehicles it should be around 650-950-ish RPM! You might want to check up on that! The downsides you're facing from idling too high is higher gas consumption, extra wear on the engine and overheating issues, less performance and the obvious environmental concern! Now ,I can't be certain from what I saw and heard in your video but if you think it idles too high you might want to take a look at that! If it has a manual choke, make sure you don't leave that on after its warmed up a bit too! 😛
    I must say, that van is pretty sweet, and after you're done with the interior it'll be so much cooler! 😁👍
    // Happy holiday greetings from Sweden! 😊

    You're going to need bigger shirts after 6 months of using the manual steering as your arms will double in size😂
    Just a thought when you start the remodel. There is always lots of dead space when building cabinets and such. If you could incorporate hidden access panels to that space it would give you secure places to stow your gear safely🤔.
    As always, great video.

    If you have a fuel indicator on your dashboard like a picture of a pump, you'll notice an arrow on one side or the other- the arrow side tells you which side of the vehicle the cap is on.

    • @dross24MA
      @dross24MA หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      😅Came here to give the same information. Also, if there isn't an arrow, usually the level indicator itself will be on the side of the fill hole.

    • @ianhill4585
      @ianhill4585 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Or you could walk around the vehicle and locate the filler cap, keep the vehicle long enough, you'll automatically remember what side it's on😅.

    Just noticed your channel and will definitely keep watching your journey. We have a 1990 talbot petrol, but with the door on side. I hate driving it as compared to our lexus automatic car with all the fancy bits and extras, the Talbots lack of power steering and speed, isnt for me 😅.but my partner, a lorry driver, it isnt an issue! We just fitted a diesel heater and lovely and toastie. Just in middle of renovating interior and painting exterior, 3/4 done. Good luck on your journey and great to see a young lad with so much drive and optimism. Well done

    You brought back a lot of memories, from when we bought our first camper, a Winnebago Brave. It was an automatic, but windup windows, the first fill-up of fuel took forever and was quite a shock how much gas it held and the cost. I was chuckling over the no cup holders, wind up windows, how big it was. Fun memories. Thank you. We sized up to a 35ft Motor Home, a few years later. Have fun. Ronnie in Saskatchewan

    Not all fuel gauges are accurate. My car the last half of the tank is actually one third a tank, the 1/2-3/4 full on the gauge is about a third and the 3/4-full is about a third😂. So the gauge is marked in quarters but I estimate the fuel by thirds.
    Also thanks for the USD price per liter, but Americans buy fuel in gallons, so a little more math for them :). As an American who’s lived overseas for over a decade converting fuel prices is always hard

    Alex, I personally wouldn't remove the gas items if they are working. The fire is externally flued, fridge will be gas and electric, just wants a clean, the old stuff was well made and better quality than new . Remember the gas items need no battery power to operate, your diesel heater uses battery all the time it's working.
    I agree the tick over of the van is high, almost if the choke is on.
    Finally you are brave if you tackle the rebuild of walls in the van, it will be a big job. They have been covered up with plastic cladding because of water leaking in and wood rotting, I have rebuilt a number of damp caravans, their build is very similar to the back of the van, lightweight timber frame, polystyrene insulation, aluminium outer and plywood inner .
    Enjoy Turtle, best of luck with your travels.

    If and when you do an interior remodel you can insulate and soundproof the wall panels, tyre surrounds ( very important) and floor/ceiling. Well worth it. Lots of campervan and van conversions to watch on youtube.
    Maybe you could even do a collaboration with a creator with experience. They have all the tricks to utilise space.

They didn’t have to run the rv or generator to increase battery power all the time, as long as there was some sun they could go camp in the forest or beach for much longer than previous.

      Always with a new to you vehicle, get the wheel balancing checked and get the tracking done. I once bought a lovely Rover 420 GSi in British racing green. I went out in it the day after I bought it on a wet day and it was like the car was on tippitoes or roller blades so I took it straight to ATS and someone had put the wheels on the wrong way as in the wheels running forwards should have been turning backwards and two were borderline on the limit so the ATS guys fixed each corner including the back to front ones, balanced them and set up the tracking. It then drove like a proper sporty car.

    So pleased you now have ‘Turtle ‘ back on the road. Looking forward to seeing the renovations progress. I would keep the sink and perhaps a small bench top oven/grill for quick snacks while on the road. Enjoy your travels.

    Not bad pricing for the work, they are a reliable old van / camper on the whole, go on for years, bit juicy especially the petrol ones, and yes I'd say the tick over did sound a bit high... This van life thing really has took off, the renovation cooking and stealth camping vids especially... Good luck mate 👍

    When you "rip it out" do it gently and put the stove/oven/sink up for reseale or donation.
    Believe ir or not, there are people out there looking for those older style units and who can fix them.
    When I am not using the oven in my old camper for baking, it houses my pots and pans.😊
    Agree to a diesel heater...that's my plan also.
    Those old propane furnaces are a beast and mine wasn't all that great at keeping us warm.

    My heart sank when you put unleaded into the van First time I’ve seen a campervans which takes unleaded

    Woah! I haven't ever seen a RV, or any vehicle for that matter, where you fill up at the front fender. Very interesting.

    Yes! I hear ya! Always hard to find a spot to tether a dog. I founded and rescue German Shephards and have 3 Shephards and a chocolate lab, considering getting a camper but nothing reasonable that the dogs can be in but my issue is how to safely secure them if in a accident dogs spook and run and don’t look back and one can’t run after them so has to be safe! Challenging…

    A talking dog! Lela, you are so clever. Turtle is a great name for the van. My Dad used to have caravans, so we went all around europe camping. You might find it helpful to get Turtle serviced etc at specialist campervan garages as they know what they are dealing with and get parts quicker. Can't wait for the renovations to start. Good luck. 😀

    First order of business, cup holders. Cute name. Use some rubber restore product on window and door gaskets to help preserve them. Have the brake cable checked, it might not be releasing properly. It looks a lot nicer.

    Alex, take a look at the petrol gauge, a lot of them have an arrow pointing left/right. This is where your filler is.
