Yeah. It was actually the opposite. The blimp dock was just an excuse so that it was considered an integral part of the building, therefore making it officially taller. It was just a marketing scheme.
They added a transmitter tower in 1961 as radio broadcasts switched from the Chrysler building to the Empire State Building. That’s the red and white beams above the spire used for airship dockings
@Pedro Albuquerque Santos they actually don't count the spire as part of the buildings height. Since completion it's official height has always been 1,250ft. Same situation with the (Sears Tower) now Willis Tower. They don't count the height of the antenna.
You can't lie to me. I saw the Dr. Who episode on this. That spire was used to make an army of human Dalek hybrids with a bunch of space Chicago typewriters during the great depression!
A airship has a ridged (steel) frame. A blimp does not. A blimp is much smaller and carries less. A zeppelin, is the Germans name for a airship, named after a military German officer, the German only had access to hydrogen gas back then which is a very flammable.. hence the burning of the nazi Hindenburg..The Hendenberg disaster is something that could not have happened to an American or British airship, as we use helium a non-flammable gas, back in the era of mighty the Airships! Thanks for sharing!! How insane would that have been to ride and dock in one at the top looking down at the city below.
Its annoying how many people dont know the difference. I understand not everyone cares about airships and blimps but if you are gonna comment on a video like some people do thinking they know everything from cartoons its infuriating.
You gotta love the Art Deco style. Where else can you find Art Deco skyscrapers? One extremely foggy day in July 1945 the pilot of a B-25 was given permission to not fly to LaGuardia. He just barely missed the Chrysler Building, but there was something dark in the fog ahead which he wasn’t able to avoid!
They didn't think of putting a line on the stern and tether it to another structure. When the airship was banned by Standard Oil (unofficially), it was abandoned.
The actual reason was because Pierre DuPont (the businessman who built the tower) wanted to make sure that it would be higher than Walter Chrysler’s Chrysler tower which was the tallest building in NY at the time. Saying that it would be used as a docking station was basically an excuse to hide his true intention to just build a taller building than Chrysler.
It's not the the airships are going above the spire. You think a huge airship larger than any plane is gonna be pushed up, forward, then down to try and be impaled before they have time to control it? Not to mention they have segmented airbags so even if one was impaled its not the end of the world. Worse case scenario they have to decrease ballast and go farther up to not collide
The summer of ‘36 the Hindenburg could be seen flying over the Empire State Building with big white swastikas on its tail fins. Most of the passengers were Germans, the same as when it crashed on May 6, 1937 at Lakehurst, NJ. On May 20, ‘37, Amelia Earhart flew out from Oakland over the Golden Gate Bridge for the last time. A week later the bridge was opened. Exciting times back then!
It was also there to make it taller because they were trying to make the building 1776 ft and if your wondering why because that when America got there independence from uk
There's a major difference between a spire and a mooring mast. I think you should've specified both in the video, because zeppelins weren't supposed to dock to a spire. But a mast. And the spire was added on the tower in 1951 for broadcasting
Stuff like this makes me think of what the world would look like if society had went with a more dieselpunk/steampunk route instead of the conventional electrical stuff we know and love.
Yes it was what I think, because I already knew!! 😢 Only one small airship ever docked onto the Empire State Building, for thirty seconds in windy conditions.
WRONG!! it was built as a way to make it taller than the Chrysler Building at all costs, they decided a dirigible mast would be ideal knowing full well it would never be used as a mooring mast
The structure of this roof cap is exactly like the kind of telemetry tracker that NASA uses to identify dead pulsars in deep space. Cold-riveted girders...with cores of pure selenium. The whole building is a huge super-conductive antenna that was designed and built expressly for the purpose of pulling in and concentrating spiritual turbulence.
I've never met anyone who thought the spire was added later and wasn't part of the original construction.
