Great video... I have been doing pottery for a year and a half and you guys are my inspiration. I am almost 70 years old but I fell in love with Pottery. WIsh I did it long time ago.
I love this. Have been a potter for more than 40 years but had that day job. Now retired full time potter. We live in the middle of now Colorado. Miss my potter friends and community of potters. When I was in high school I was told only 1% of people are artists. I thought well that will give me 99% of the people to sell to. Parents thought otherwise. Thank you for this series reminds me of my potter friends

I purchased an urn for my fathers ages from Vaughn Smith. The man is so nice and easy to talk with. He has been a professional for 40yrs and has an easy way of teaching. His life and business experiences would be wonderful lessons for anyone selling pottery. He is doing something right! Love the Mathew Kelley interview, great job!

I’m not a potter-my hobbies revolve around yarn & fabric mostly-but I really enjoy watching how pottery & glass are made, which is how I found your channel a few years ago. The chemistry of color is fascinating to me with pottery (& glassmaking too) b/c the color of the glaze looks nothing like the end result, unlike dying fibers. If you’ve done a video about that before, I may have missed it, but if not, maybe interviewing someone who specializes in making the glaze powders (& maybe discuss the changes in that process over time, like colonial times vs. modern) would be interesting. Thanks, Jon! You’re an inspiration to artists of all kinds, not just potters!

Jon this was an awesome video and launch of what seems to be yet another way to put life into what people physically do in the ceramic world. Hearing about Matthew's journey was amazing and knowing what other potters endure, experience and dream to get them where they are today. I think you have really hit on something. Everyones journey is different yet interesting and inspirational not only to other potters just starting out but to the entire art community. Putting a face and the experience of potter to the pieces they create for others to buy, really sets meaning and depth to a mug or pot that we come to love and use everyday in our own lives. Alex Long Raku in Encinitas California. He has some TH-cam videos if you want to look him up. He is a really wonderful person and would be great to interview. He does some guest instruction at Palomar Jr College and that would be an interesting addition getting the students in Jon’s video.
I find this the most informative and entertaining of your videos. Great relaxed interviewing style: expressed humility (and may I say reverence) by asking questions that we all would want to ask while experiencing a new process. Wonderful engaging conversation. Do More.

What you both said about being able to earn a good living JUST from pottery is absolutely true . If that's what you really want then YES you can do it.
I did it for 10 years and the 2 of us survived very well on the income `solely` from pottery. You have to seriously want it though, be very realistic and be prepared to put in all the hard work that it takes, just like YOU both do.

Great video and awesome idea to share an experience with Matthew! I love both of your channels. I saw Jessica Putnam mentioned as another potter to interview; I concur. Obviously, Donte would be a hoot, too. For many of us, we love to watch and learn from many different artists/ TH-camrs. You all are not really competition with one another, but more mutually reinforcing supports for potters and other pottery lovers. Your idea to work with an interview other potters will only strengthen that community. As always, thanks for sharing!

You could try to interview potter's from different regions of the Country at some point. Each region has aspects that make the pottery there unique so that could be interesting.
Jennifer McCurdy and Hsin-Chuen Lin are two of my favs. Enjoyed the back ground interview on Matthew....well done!

Simon Leach would be fascinating. He's a curious mix of old-school British tradition and DIY maverick. I don't know of any professional who's gotten more mileage or better results out of electric-to-gas kiln conversions or homemade treadle-wheels.

I really enjoyed watching the wood-firing that you did. Watching this has really added to that and is very inspiring, thank you. Would love to see you collaborating with Simon Leach or Earth Nation Ceramics. One of the great tradition, the other of newer times. Both extremely talented and using You Tube to great effect. Amazing to see/understand Matthew’s strength in people to people sales but acknowledging the value of “on-line”. Xxx

Jon, I enjoyed the video and look forward to seeing more of them. I’ve followed both you and Matthew for a long time. I really enjoy wood firing, but there’s no way I could get away with that in town. I’m toying with the idea of getting into business as I do make and sell ceramic pumpkins n the fall and do fairly well with that. Interviews Ike this one with Matthew are helpful and entertaining. just a thought you could not just interview established potters like Simon Leech or Vaughan Smith but an idea is being master potter, going to up and coming potters visiting them in their studios and instructing how they can be better potters or how they can do better on the business side of pottery selling and production exchanging ideas.

An interesting pottery from which I've bought a good bit of pottery is Nichibei Potters in CA, operated by Cheryl Costantini and Mikio Matsumoto. From what I understand, Cheryl apprenticed in Japan. Mikio was a businessman who gave it up to become a full-time potter. The style of both have a Zen feel. Love the ash-glaze vases of Cheryl and hope to one day afford a piece by Mikio.

I would love to see you highlight the Village Potters in Asheville and owner Sarah Wells Rolland. She does wood firing, soda/ash firing in a gas kiln that’s built on a big trailer, and lots of big, creative things.

I might be wrong but Matthew has had a unique experience - growing up in a place where as a teenager, his choices were not limited to slinging burgers or stocking shelves at the grocery. Living in an artistic environment like Seagrove was a huge advantage.
