What makes Mark Knopfler more amazing today than he was back in our day is his consistency. He hasn't changed his style or even his voice in over 40 years. His guitar playing remains consistent. He's been consistently unique since I first heard "Sultans Of Swing" when it first played on the radio, I was only 11 then, but it was one of my favorite songs that year and he has amazed me with every album. But with that said, Making Movies remains my favorite album of his.
Making Movies is the best DS album. Get Lucky and Sailing to Philadelphia are my favorite MK albums. All together, I'm with you Making Movies was the one that showed just what he could do. I saw him in Dallas 1980, in a very small place for Making Movies tour. I sat at a table 5 ft from MK. What a show. But I have seen 11 or 12 others. All great,
Any other 15 year old, that listens to Mark Knopfler all day long? I can listen to him all day long. It’s some sort pf addiction. You can’t get tired of this... Went to see him in Antwerp. Probably the only 15 year old there.
Just a great guy, a great musician, a grounded man that has not let fame screw his brain, like the fall of countless others... it's not just his superb music, but how he represents himself, shares his world and relates to others without the need to be ego-supreme. I have so much respect for this guy. Damn, I'd love to have a coffee with him...wouldn't we all?
Ok, a beer or two with me, and then haul him out to Quabbin Reservoir in Massachusetts, where 4 towns were eliminated in 1938 to provide drinking water for Boston.. My playground. Imagine the songs/stories he could come up with that with a little background!
What a treasure this man is. I'm 66. Been a pro musician for almost 50 years. I am in total awe of Mark. A legend who truly deserves the love and respect of his fans. I love reading all the comments from his international fans. Gotta also love Glen Worf his incredible bass player!
What I love about Mark's songs is that many of them get to your emotions in one way or another. Whether it's the pain and regret of a lost love brought to mind by Romeo and Juliet, or the peace of Why Worry, the uplifting nature of Love Over Gold, the sadness of Brothers in Arms or the sweet sorrow of If This Is Goodbye, I'm sure many of us have Knofler songs that have special meaning to us, and I hope this new album adds more entries to our "Best Songs" playlists. I was at the Dire Straits concert at Wembley Arena in 1985 - one of the best I've ever been too - and the music Mark was producing then was magical, and it's still as magical today.

I have no reach of your deepest, most hidden emotions. There is no one in the world who would dare to reveal them, except our God, who can do everything and knows everything. Listening to you is like floating on top of each musical note, and in the ecstasy of this emotion, pleasure and love, there is no way to doubt that you keep, within yourself, something very grand and special that only God could reveal. Funnily enough, I went to see Dire Straits for the first time at Dingwalls in Camden Town back in January 1978 because Charlie Gillett, a Radio London DJ, described the band's music as "funked up J J Cale". As a big J J Cale fan I knew I had to go and see them and I've always thought there was a bit of J J in his music (along with a lot of other things too). He makes a fine contribution to Clapton's J J Cale tribute album "The Breeze".

What is interesting about Knopfler is he is one of the very few advanced guitarists whose playing actually connects with people. That cannot be said of Steve Vai, Satriani, or 100 other tech heads from the 80’s who play 1000 notes when one will do. Proves again that less is more.
Hey Mark. Love "Down The Road Whereever" which I got for my birthday. So sorry that the scalpers got all of the tickets to your Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville, WA, USA, or my wife and I would be coming. Have a great tour and keep the music coming.
I've loved him since Dire Straits so he has been my idol ever since I heard the first album Dire Straits gave out. My only concert with him was in 1996 in Oslo Spektrum after he had given up Dire Straits. After that I have tried to get a ticket to listen to him again. At last I have gotten it to the new tour in 2019 when he plays in Oslo Spektrum. That will be 23 years since my first concert experience. What a thrilly.
that sax solo is just a beauty. i would very much love to see mark knopfler and david gilmour do something together, even a chat. this song is beautiful!
Every song make's me feel like I know this guitar personally, and his voice is from home, since I can remember, all the happiness goodness and Blessing's with light and laughter filling every sunray in the same flow of original styles of stunning dreams unto rendering incapable of refusing these guiding lights! 💕🌹👫🌷
I just read a Mark's interview for the Guitarist magazine when he says something like "playing less notes on a solo usualy says more". Well... He can do anything he wants and feels better about it, but I really miss his mighty solos like in the final part of Planet of New Orleans in live versions. Anyway, is aways good to see Mark making new stuff. Love you Mark.
Interesting comments here. I've been a life long fan of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler's music and guitar playing. I feel I know almost every note! I see Mark Knopfler's career in 4 stages - the first 2 albums -Dire Straits and Communique (a vastly underrated album I think), have a certain quality and tone and sound to them. Making Movies and Love Over Gold sees Mark at a creative high point I reckon, branching out in sound and composition and yes, Telegraph Road is a masterpiece - I must have listened to it over a 1000 times and still don't get bored. Then they got massive with Brothers In Arms and On Every Street - the guitar playing again got more considered, richer in tone. And the solo stuff - there are many brilliant songs there too, a natural progression from the last two - a focus on songwriting craft rather than guitar soloing, though there are some great solos there too of course. Probably my favourite solo album - Privateering - just a bit different, stretching out to make a gorgeous combo of brilliant songwriting, celtic and blues. Thank you so much Mark for all the decades of musical genius and inspiration for my own guitar efforts, and for being a soundtrack to my life.
Two main points that I completely agree with you on. Communique is definitely an underrated album. I personally find it more consistent than the debut though Sultans and Waterline are not matched. Secondly, Privateering is my favourite solo album. It is a little long, but great. Would have made one hell of a single lp.
Privateering was my favourite MK solo album until Down The Road Wherever came along. I still think the first six songs on that are the best stretch of consistent quality Mark has offered up since On Every Street.

I was just with " boom like that " I was not waiting for a new hit from Mark! How can someone dislikes mark's?
What is interesting about Knopfler is he is one of the very few advanced guitarists whose playing actually connects with people. That cannot be said of Steve Vai, Satriani, or 100 other tech heads from the 80’s who play 1000 notes when one will do. Proves again that less is more.
Hey Mark. Love "Down The Road Whereever" which I got for my birthday. So sorry that the scalpers got all of the tickets to your Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville, WA, USA, or my wife and I would be coming. Have a great tour and keep the music coming.
I'm a fan in WA! Come see us when you can! Mark, not Oswald...😁✌🏼
What a thrilly.

this song is beautiful!
Mustafa Can Kaya good idea
Look it up on TH-cam, theyv played before.
Every song make's me feel like I know this guitar personally, and his voice is from home, since I can remember, all the happiness goodness and Blessing's with light and laughter filling every sunray in the same flow of original styles of stunning dreams unto rendering incapable of refusing these guiding lights! 💕🌹👫🌷
Pure poetry
Pure garbage more likely (don't mean the song, just the comment here)
I just read a Mark's interview for the Guitarist magazine when he says something like "playing less notes on a solo usualy says more".
Don't forget his film score stuff, or the branching out with the Notting Hillbillies :) My personal favourite is Single Handed Sailor from Communique.
Yeah I agree too if Privateering had been a single lp - what an amazing album that would have been!
Communique is very underrated, I agree - quite possibly my favourite Dire Straits album.
Privateering was my favourite MK solo album until Down The Road Wherever came along. I still think the first six songs on that are the best stretch of consistent quality Mark has offered up since On Every Street.
Mark Knopfler.
The Master of Catchy.
The best of all . This is what we call music 🎻🎸🎷🎹
Mark am happy you still active in 2018 and going strong. Lots of 80's singers already stopped.
