State function means only the first and the last parts matter, e.g Pressure, Volume etc. but path function means every part of the process matters for e.g- if the conditions in system are changing from condition A to condition B to condition C total work will be sum of w(A)+w(B)+w(C)

If there are 4 states, initial state will be state 1 , final state will be state 4 but previous states of state 4 can be state 1,2,3 , considering the process goes through state 1,2,3,4 respectively
I think it's because you cannot use change in state function to explain the current state of the system. like............change in temp = 100k dosn't really tell anything about the system. it could have gone from 0 to 100k or from 14000 to 14100k.....so yeah
