Way cool John! TH-cam can be a rabbit hole of useless info but when John in the UK can indirectly collaborate with Tom in Nashville it shows its true value! Great post!

Great lesson, Cordy. This one is fantastic for hybrid picking as well.

Really interesting information here and a nod to Stuart Ryan. You have a very nice touch as well as knowledge. Great video! 👌

I saw another video where Tom actually talks about this lick. He starts the descending part on an upstroke and picks every note. I normally always keep downstrokes and downbeats alined but with this lick it's actually much easier starting on an upstroke. Specially if you don't use legato. I don't know if that's interesting to anyone else ;-)

Reminds of the great lick in Lights by Neal Schon

Diggin’ the gold top! Sounds great! Good video too! Another great album with Tom Bukovac is Drew Winn’s album (self titled). Drew owns Guitar House of Tulsa; where I purchased “Sherwood” (my green ‘59 Custom Shop reissue). Give it a listen, Tom kills it on the album (of course)! 👏🏻

For anyone looking for an easier way to play that descending lick that starts with the index on 7, it's actually much easier in the box below starting with ring on e 7-5, b 7-5, g 7-4, b 7-5, g 7-4,d 7-4, g 7-4, d 7-4, a 7-5 etc

But if you play it the way described by John & Tom, the first note with your index really should be picked on an upstroke to start. I've heard Tom say it a few times and he's absolutely right

Check out a Lenny Breau/ Buddy Emmons tune called Minors Aloud. It’s slightly different but still does the 4th pent thing

Lenny did you say Lenny Breau?
Saw him Live dozens of times in the ‘70’s.
Often at near empty small clubs. Years later became Telephone friends with Danny Gatton. Danny told me he had recorded hundreds of hours of him and Lenny playing over the years. Where are those tapes? Moving forward another 15 years or so I casually met Jack Zaza in the hallway at an arts school that I was teaching math at. Jack hired Lenny to be a guitarist in the CBC orchestra for live television shows in the mid-60s. Unbelievable plus I worked with another teacher who had recorded and toured with the Beach boys and then became a member of the buddy rich band. Mr. E sadly passed on, and won international awards that I only recently found out about. All these guys are so humble.
I have had a Great life meeting, extraordinary people along the journey. Silly, I’m old and ill now, but I still dream and have passion about guitar and the great guitar playe 3:59 rs. No I certainly am not one of them.
Rarely have i Read comments that included Lenny Breau’s name, but he should be

I realized this "2 note pattern" when I was a kid first learning pentatonics. I figured I'd be well off trying to create patterns I could repeat. I knew nothing of the notes, the purpose, or Tom Bukovac, so its really really weird hearing a pattern I mindlessly played for over a decade.
I still haven't learned theory, don't judge me... I'm trying again now that I'm an adult lol

I like your tone on that guitar. Seems to me that your desired tone is easier to acquire with humbuckers.

Anti stretchy boy here. Instead of the 5 9 stretch just sweep 10 9 7 on EAD strings.
