    One thing I always liked about this theme: it's a waltz. A slow, spiraling dance into oblivion...

    • @f.herumusu8341
      @f.herumusu8341 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's written in 3/4, but that does not make it automatically a waltz. At least I can't imagine someone dancing to it at the vienna opera ball.

    • @targetdreamer257
      @targetdreamer257 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Good observation it does feel like a waltz even though I can really say on on the other.
      Even so I still love this piece.

    • @Retrorevelations
      @Retrorevelations 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@cartshort1286 The original film IS actually incredibly well written. It was, in its way, absolutely Disney's attempt to cash in on the success of Star Wars. But thankfully they didn't blatantly rip off that masterpiece, instead making something wholly unique and their own. The Black Hole was a very intelligent, and actually surprisingly very dark film, considering it was produced by Disney (back when they still made good things and weren't yet a soulless Mega-Corp).
      I don't personally agree that the film has "major flaws". I think it was actually a very well thought out story, and the execution, for its time, was actually state of the art. Could it have been even better? Of course. But I don't think a modern remake, with a ton of CGI and silly modern sensibilities, would be any "better".
      My one major nitpick about the film, is the incredibly vague, super-bizarre ending sequence. But, then again, that was the artistic choice of the director/etc. at the time. But otherwise, I earnestly do consider this movie not just a classic, but a masterpiece in its own way. One of Disney's best live-action efforts, right up there with 20,000 Leagues, Treasure Island, and Escape to Witch Mountain.

    John Barry was in real and grand creative stride in 1979 / 1980, composing four epic soundtracks: "Moonraker", "The Black Hole", "Raise the Titanic", and "Somewhere in Time". Any one of them could (and should) be considered sublime and a musical master stroke.

Criminal how it has never seen a decent general blu ray release. I would like to know why. The music as well is incredible. As an all round package, this movie pretty much has everything. You gotta hand it to these genius movie score composers, they really know how to convey emotion through symphony orchestra music. I couldn’t imagine more appropriate or ominous accompaniment music for watching a passing black hole as it consumes the planets, asteroids, sun, and all the matter in our solar system. (Kind of like a space Nero) Maurice Jarre was one of these geniuses; he composed the music for the 1962 movie “Lawrence of Arabia” for which he won an academy award, and in my opinion is the greatest movie music score of all time.

      R-136a1 is the largest known star in terms of mass as opposed to diameter. It weighs in at 265 times the Sun's mass. It is a blue hypergiant and is nearly 9 million times as bright as the sun is. Its habitable zone is nearly a tenth of a light year away, about 1 trillion km or 625 billion miles. When it explodes, it will outshine a thousand galaxies so great the explosion will be. That's not a mere supernova. That's a hypernova. Its apparent magnitude will likely rival that of the Sun. We will have two suns in the sky for about three months when that happens. It can go hypernova anytime.

    Fantastic score by Barry again, especially this iconic part. The one thing I recall about this movie,followed by maximillian and Roddy McDowell's wee robot! Great stuff,thanks for posting.

    Good point - it's not really a fair comparison. I like Star Wars, Star Trek, and Black Hole - but each is unique and stands on its own. I don't usually make comparisons.

    I hope the remake ditches the "cute" robots. They were simply trying to get in on the R2-D2 act. Keep Maximilian though, but more evil. And the USS Cygnus should be pretty much the same but with full big-budget CGI boosting up the detail inside and out.

      @martinguzman3995 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I'm hoping that they keep Vincent and Bob in the remake. They're very unique robots because they can hover/fly. They can also shoot lasers which is pretty cool.

      Martin Guzman Yeah, they're awesome! They're fantastic characters! There ain't nothing wrong with "cute" robots. It is a movie after all.

      There's "cute", and there's just plain silly. These are robots out on the far frontier helping humanity in some potentially life-threatening situations. Big stupid eyes on the front are not required. Have you seen the recent movie "Interstellar"? If not, I really urge you to see it, there's a new, awesome, capable, yet funny Robot in town, and it's name is C.A.S.E. ;)

    20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, but with Nemo as a narcissistic megalomaniac. It was Disney's very first PG rated film. The tech is dated, the science is inaccurate based on what we now know of black holes, some of the dialogue is nonsensical, and the whole thing is a bit campy at times, but there are these little throwaway moments that hint at something much deeper and much darker. If they got some good writers in, and utilized what we now know of black holes, I would love to see a reboot.

    John Barry also did the score for King Kong 1976. I still have the vinyls of the soundtrack when I got them as a kid in 1976, 19779.
