But thankfully they didn't blatantly rip off that masterpiece, instead making something wholly unique and their own. The Black Hole was a very intelligent, and actually surprisingly very dark film, considering it was produced by Disney (back when they still made good things and weren't yet a soulless Mega-Corp). I don't personally agree that the film has "major flaws". I think it was actually a very well thought out story, and the execution, for its time, was actually state of the art. Could it have been even better? Of course. But I don't think a modern remake, with a ton of CGI and silly modern sensibilities, would be any "better". My one major nitpick about the film, is the incredibly vague, super-bizarre ending sequence. But, then again, that was the artistic choice of the director/etc. at the time. But otherwise, I earnestly do consider this movie not just a classic, but a masterpiece in its own way. One of Disney's best live-action efforts, right up there with 20,000 Leagues, Treasure Island, and Escape to Witch Mountain.

What a tune. What a film. What a dark time where childrens entertainment dared to cross over the line into adult subjects. I have fond/dark memories of this movie...and it's music. By the way, John Barry also wrote the theme tune to James Bond...can you tell? Anyone listened to his other Bond themes?

This is a classic movie! Well written and well acted! 5 stars way up! The music in this film is timeless and really epic! John Barrry had a gift from God to make epic awesome music!

I can remember this movie showing on tv long, long ago and I loved it. I found it fascinating, creepy, mysterious, epic, all of the above. I have just ordered the movie on U.S. dvd. Criminal how it has never seen a decent general blu ray release. I would like to know why. The music as well is incredible. As an all round package, this movie pretty much has everything. What an amazing job Disney did with this, it is so underrated.

Cute robots and crew meet EVIL on a derelict spaceship. For some reason that combination worked. Much like the jubilant music of the heroes & the dark haunting score gave it a unique feel to the film. On another note (lol), the ending of the movie is meant to be interpretive and not some concrete answer that far too many people complain about. It suppose to make you think..duh!

I havn't seen this movie in a lonnngg, long time! But this soundtrack brings back so many memories of how dark and mysterious the film came across! Its persuaded me to buy the movie after all these years and re-watch it, can't wait! Thanks for uploading this awesome soundtrack!
There was this one BBC documentary about supermassive black holes that I was obsessed with as a child and this soundtrack was used in it. It was only years later that I watched this movie for the first time and realised where the music came from.

You gotta hand it to these genius movie score composers, they really know how to convey emotion through symphony orchestra music. I couldn’t imagine more appropriate or ominous accompaniment music for watching a passing black hole as it consumes the planets, asteroids, sun, and all the matter in our solar system. (Kind of like a space Nero) Maurice Jarre was one of these geniuses; he composed the music for the 1962 movie “Lawrence of Arabia” for which he won an academy award, and in my opinion is the greatest movie music score of all time.

I hope the remake ditches the "cute" robots. They were simply trying to get in on the R2-D2 act. Keep Maximilian though, but more evil. And the USS Cygnus should be pretty much the same but with full big-budget CGI boosting up the detail inside and out.
I'm hoping that they keep Vincent and Bob in the remake. They're very unique robots because they can hover/fly. They can also shoot lasers which is pretty cool.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, but with Nemo as a narcissistic megalomaniac. It was Disney's very first PG rated film. The tech is dated, the science is inaccurate based on what we now know of black holes, some of the dialogue is nonsensical, and the whole thing is a bit campy at times, but there are these little throwaway moments that hint at something much deeper and much darker. If they got some good writers in, and utilized what we now know of black holes, I would love to see a reboot.
One thing I always liked about this theme: it's a waltz. A slow, spiraling dance into oblivion...
It's written in 3/4, but that does not make it automatically a waltz. At least I can't imagine someone dancing to it at the vienna opera ball.

Goldfinger is one of his best. Listen to "The Laser Beam" from that score. Also, his score from Somewhere In Time is audio gold.

You forgot "King Kong" from 1976. While a campy remake, Barry's score was phenomenal.
I just watched a scene from raise the titanic by chance and I recognised the music and instantly looked it up and saw it was the same composer.
The Specialist is an amazing score by John Barry .
Even Star Crash had some really nice themes.
His score for 1978's *Game of Death* was fantastic, too--much better than the film deserved!

The film flopped at the box office, but this motion picture score was one of John Barry’s best work!
It might not have flopped if they’d left out the weird Heaven/Hell sequence at the end… not everyone in the world is Christian
Disney films have been known to initially fail at the box office. FANTASIA and PINOCCHIO are good examples.
