These two books got me back into science fiction -- they tell compelling stories with brilliant prose that you don't have to be a fan of science fiction to enjoy and appreciate.

Neon Leviathan sounds terrific. I'm a sucker for short story collections but science fiction is not usually in my wheelhouse. Your description has sold me and I just added it to my Kindle. Thank you for talking me into something new.
Don't let the genre category put you off, these are well crafted stories that just happen to be set in the future. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
I’ve had _Hyperion_ recommended to me. By your description Napper sounds really appealing though. I tried to write a short story once and felt hopelessly lost - you have to admire those who have mastered the craft.
Give it a try, I'd liken it to Ray Bradbury's science fiction short story collections such as The Illustrated Man and The Martian Chronicles.
I think that the Priest and Scholar are tied for the best stories in Hyperion. I love all of them though.
Both of them certainly are superb.
I just added the TR Trapper novel to my TBR. Sounds like something I'd thoroughly enjoy. I read Hyperion some years back and I'm one of the few sci-fi fans that did not like it much. It's a book I want to revisit one day though to see if my opinion changes. Your breakdown of the priest's story makes that even more likely now.
I know Hyperion can be a decisive book, if only because of it's popularity. Give Neon Leviathan a shot and let me know what you think.
Hyperion sounds intriguing.
It's a great entry point into science fiction, give it a try.
Glad you found something to enjoy. Currently at page 785 of the Count of Monte Cristo. Still got a long way to go! Best wishes and happy reading.
Best of luck with that!
