MacArthur actually staged the scene where he walked up on the beach, for show.
That segment was actually filmed five times to get the “most impressive take” for the history film or record.
My uncle , who served on the U.S.S. Dyson (DD572), was a gunners mate and was there for the actual battles to take the Philippines back from the Japanese.
He (my uncle) was actually THERE when they were filming and thought that MacArthur was a “blow hard” looking for glory while my uncle and so many soldiers had to do the dirty work.

@@Happysenior7 publicity stunt aside, MacArthur was the only general staff officer in the US military that wanted to make the defense and recovery of the Philippines a priority. He pushed for 2 years and stressed the importance of freeing the Filipino people from the Japanese occupation.

@@Happysenior7 actually that is not true a biographer researched and found that it was not staged. There were in fact three separate landings that MacArthur in the Philippines and in all 3 cases the General was forced to walk ashore from an LCT when inspecting the landings. Because no boat could not get close to the shore anyone wanting to leave would be forced to wade ashore.

Does anyone know why there is no complete footage of the shore walk?
Coz MacArthur (or somebody else) tripped, and they had to edit it out.
I saw one of the unedited copies back in the 80s. But there was no way to record it quickly at that time, unlike now.

He wasn’t willing to forfeit all of the Philippines except Bataan without a fight and horde precious food supplies for his garrison, in what ultimately would’ve ended the same way. If Japan didn’t completely wipe the floor with everyone else, including the “Gibraltar of the East” maybe I’d agree buckling down on Bataan was the correct play. MacArthur was serious about protecting the Philippines. It took all his political cache later in the war to shut down the USN faction seeking to bypass the Philippines for Formosa.
