The Elaine Weissman Lifetime Achievement Awards are presented each year during the annual Folk Alliance International conference to honor the cultural impact of legendary folk music figures, one Living, one Legacy, and one Organizational/Academic. As a part of the award process, FAI produces a short-documentary to commemorate these great artists and to provide a resource to the community sharing the rich history and lasting cultural influence of folk music.

Elizabeth Cotten is my great grandmother. I am Brenda Evans, one of the great grands who she mentioned who added verses to the song Shake Sugaree. I am also the vocalist featured on her album Shake Sugaree. It is so wonderful to read the comments each of you have written. It makes me happy and grateful to know that you appreciate her music. I've only just discovered her. I'm a 54 year old white guy from the UK. Have a really wide array of musical loves, but some people slip by. Glad I found her.
That's awesome! How great that experience had to be. Love her music and sweet personality, so awesome. I heard freight train a few months ago and was in awe. Just found out a few minutes ago she was born in chapel hill, I just left there a few minutes ago literally, it's only 10 miles from me!
I'm glad I didn't go to my grave without ever hearing her play! God must be loving her pickin'!!

Same here. At thirteen, I saw her on Pete Seeger's PBS show. I was immediately smitten and committed to learning it. Still a wonderful song.
