- Zeus presents Arkanoid (un-emulated) for the C64, a true classic from the golden era of C64 gaming which must not be forgotten alongside the software house and all programmers that were involved in making this game.
Year of release: 1987
Well i'm quite surprised that no C64 fanatic has uploaded a longplay of this before on youtube, so I guess it was down to me to do so.
Starts off with the usual cracking Ocean loader II, followed by a cool sounding title screen music,...even though to me it doesn't fit this particular game, in fact it's the same music on the game Cobra,...well the spectrum version anyway.
This version of the game is ok but there are two things I really don't like about this version:
1) The ball can suddenly change direction in mid flight for no reason which is a real nuisance and can be very annoying.
2) No lazer pods anywhere in this version,...WTF?!
Playing this for nearly 2 hours I expected a better ending too :-(
You will laugh though, after listening to the loader & title music for around 6 minutes, I start the game and after hitting just 1 brick I die lol,...I could've redone that bit but I found it funny,...I was fiddling around with the Neos mouse, joystick control is totally useless in this game, you need a mouse.
I have used the infinite lives poke so I could upload the entire game for your viewing pleasure.
Hope all you C64 fans enjoy this upload.
A huge thanks goes out to Ian from Mutant Caterpillar Games for lending me his Neos mouse for this game.
Visit his retro game shop on Ebay: stores.ebay.co....
Please note: NONE of my game uploads are emulated in any way whatsoever, they are 100% original recordings by myself taken directly from the original hardware the game was intended for, that way you know you're watching the real thing.
I will also always state weather i am using any cheats in the game, if not mentioned then i am not using any.

Keeping the memory of the C64 and it's cool games alive!!!
"Arkanoid was my first professional piece of work (I'm still going after almost 30 years!), so I've a big soft spot for it. We had the arcade machine near my dungeon corner (Ocean was below street level; we could just see out and watch people's feet as they passed by), and I got rather good at it.
I remember playing the thing all the way through so we could get a videotape of it, then I could use that video and the much-used pause button to try to match the graphics. All hi-tech stuff!"
-- Mark Jones, graphic artist [Arkanoid - C64]
The intro music... just wow!
I only made it to round 14, thanks to the warp zone. I remember the "expand" sound like it was yesterday. I lived for that laser power up.
Fond memories of this game, I can remember not being able to sleep as a child cause my dad was playing this game in the other room till 2 a.m. .... Never really understood the "story" of this game as a kid and could never complete this game either. (round 10 was a pain.....)
Not my favorite game, but this conversion is a work of love. Great sounds and music. It really takes me back to the days of the arcades.
For some odd reason I always liked the music better than the game itself. I would sit and watch the title screen and just listen. Of course the game was good too.
Oh man, yeah, the game was a good rendition but it's just a bat and ball at the end of the day. That Martin Galway tune though with those sick clicks - it was like some early glitch-hop or something!
Excellent upload!
The Neos mouse is the most suitable way to play and enjoy Arkanoid.
Well I noticed to my surprise no'one had upload a full longplay of this before so I knew I had to do it, Arkanoid II C64 longplay has also been recorded and will be upload today :-)
Yeah no doubt the mouse helped a lot, the joystick control was a waste of time.
Paddles are the most suitable way to play any Breakout derivative. If a mouse were truly the best way to play these games, the arcade machines would have had a slider rather than a knob.
29:08 - I think that this screen is as far as I could ever go as a kid.
Now would probably fail right on the first screen...
Lol
Magnifique son et animation pour cette machine des années 80
As another said, I had the NTSC disk version and got lasers on a fairly regular basis. I still have all the same hardware and disk, I'll have to give it a try soon and see how often I get lasers, but I seem to remember getting them at least once or twice a level as long as their was a decent amount of blocks on the level.
Thanks for the playthrough, I always sucked at this game and never made it past level 10 or so.
This game is so brilliantly flawlessly programmed, programmers today using modern game engines would struggle with making what they did with assembly, 1 MHZ , 64 kb of ram and 8 sprites
God i loved this on my old 64.
30 odd year ago I could finish this on C64. Not on the arcade version though. I could get to about the 8th screen in the arcades. The C64 version was quite a bit easier. It was also digital rather than analog control (most arcade versions of this had a trackball and the 64 used keyboard or mouse though you could fit a NeoMouse if you had one... nobody had one)
O this is where Jammer got his 80squares song from!
Play starts at 6:35
The game can give you the Laser weapon but it's EXTREMELY rare.
That's the only thing that let this version down, the rarity of the laser pod, not once did it appear in this longplay, took me ages to do some of the levels brick by brick :-(
i got a Poke which gives you very often the L capsule and others.
never made it far enough in the game to know🗿 was the final boss
The laser pod was very rare indeed on the C64 version. The far more useful Break pod was more abundant though. The rare laser pod issue wasn't evident on the other versions, so it must've been an oversite with the C64 team. The C64 version of Arkanoid 2:ROD resolved this too, and the laser pod appeared as abundantly as the other weapons.
Yes it was annoying not getting those laser pods, because of that issue I had to complete it the long way,...brick by brick with the ball,...a little frustrating to be honest.
Hi , did you ever try any poke to get laser all time? Laser is on and use whenever you need.
I never got the chance to finish the game properly because the version I had crashed randomly. The only way to see the ending was with a cheat.
That music right after the flashing grey border from 3:55 onwards.
That's a rendition of the fabulous title music of Cobra on the ZX Spectrum:
th-cam.com/video/NIsgdtyFhKE/w-d-xo.html
Mind you, that music on the standard Spectrum model is produced by the CPU itself which is only capable of producing sinus waves and no sound effects out of the box.
Well, until some real sound wizard came along and gave it the treatment of a genius.
Galway programmed the ZX Spectrum music 1986, one year prior to its reuse in Arkanoid on the C64.
My strategy was to catch every barrel and get maximum points to get maximum lives (even when a b or l comes) that are very handy at later levels, I finished it with that strategy several times.
ARKANOID II - REVENGE OF DOH (C64 - FULL GAME)
d'oh!
I bought it and everybody loved it.
Where is the end music?
There isn't any, this is the real ending and then it goes back to title page,...all that for basically nothing.
Zeusdaz - The Unemulated Retro Game Channel i remember this ending tune th-cam.com/video/1yKnkAVho_I/w-d-xo.html
Hmm yeah well I don't know about that mate, all I know is this is the full game I recorded on the real hardware and it didn't give me an end tune :-/
@@ZEUSDAZ Music in the link is also the highscore screen music from arcade game. Maybe link is from USA C64 tweaked version that commenters here state had the laser weapon appear more frequently than the European version in yhis video.
@@ZEUSDAZyou have got a weird version. There is an ending to this, showing the spaceship and a different tune.
I had a copy of the U.S. disk release and I'm sure it had lasers in it. Also, I don't think I ever saw the ball just change direction in mid-air unless it hit something.
One thing I don't understand is why pretty much all the home versions speed up the balls when you catch the "D" powerup. The arcade version didn't do that.
Might be cause the multiballs hit each other in quick succession when released. Hitting objects in quick succession speeds up the ball. (in this case all three)
I remember when you start a 2 player game there was a way to get infinite lifes
Works in single player mode on v2: Revenge of Doh. You need to get yourself on to the hi-score board (Don't need a large score), then type in the following as a name: DEBBIE S > enter. Now when you play again, you notice the boarder changes colour, and you have unlimited lives. Just for note, same trick works in most C64 emulators too. V1, just found this.... gamefaqs.gamespot.com/c64/564810-arkanoid/cheats
nice video
That was a greeat start.
I know lol 😂
I almost start to cry because I don't know what happened to my C64... I think my father got rid of it as punishment for some stupid silly thing I must have done...
Think I lost about a year of my Life on this game 😊
Edit: I could have sworn this game had a laser gun power-up! Or was that a later version?
Yeah I don't know, It's wierd that they would leave such an important power-up out of this version.
39:45 😂
Best game

Bought myself a couple paddles the other week and all i can say is that Ocean should have released a bundle with paddle's for this baby. Check this great game from recent years as well if you like paddle games: csdb.dk/release/?id=103133
I can see how paddles would make it easier but I was fine with the mouse lent me, I always played the speccy version with keys and the amiga version with the mouse, but joystick was utterly useless for breakout games.
Plenty of version of Arkanoid on my channel :-)
Next up longplay of Arkanoid II C64.
Cool!
This clearly shows how good the game actually is when you play it with a proper controller.
I made a quick comparison as part of my 8-Bit computer comparison: th-cam.com/video/PCsO--auc2c/w-d-xo.html
I bought one of those multi joyboards just to have paddles to play this game!
Imho, paddles are even better for this game than a mouse. Got quite far on the C64 and finished it later on the Amiga with mouse control.
Without trainer, of couse...
I had different strategies concerning which power up to get and which to avoid. I nevver passed on a "Slowdown" powerup. THey make the game slow and even more tedious but make it much easier to keep the ball in the game.
And I avoided the "triple ball" like the plague. It usually just speeds up the ball and you lose the other 2 ones in a second anyways.
Yeah paddles would be the best option considering the arcade machine was controlled using a spinner but sadly I don't have a paddle, I was lucky enough for someone to lend me their Neos mouse to do this and Arkanoid II (next upload).
The Amiga version was a stunning conversion by Discovery, using full screen play area and by pressing F3 you got 32 alternative levels: ARKANOID - ALTERNATE LEVELS (AMIGA)
Just can't understand why they left the lazer out of this version, made the game far harder and longer to finish.
I still enjoy Giganoid,...a breakout I also can complete without cheats: GIGANOID (AMIGA - FULL GAME)
ZEUSDAZ - THE UNEMULATED RETRO GAME CHANNEL
THe C64 version should have the lazer power up. I think, I remember using it. Probably a glitch in the version you used.
Giganoid was OK... I have to admit, that after finishing Arkanoid, I got pretty bored of similar games. Never really played Arkanoid II, but I remember it was not as good on the Amiga as the first part. Also done by different developers, iirc.
Argh, don't even go there mate regarding Arkanoid II on the amiga,...terrible ST port with crackling sampled sound fx, just terrible.
I loved the spectrum 128k version though, I thought it was the best conversion:
ARKANOID II - REVENGE OF DOH - 128K (ZX SPECTRUM - FULL GAME)
But.... the IIGS version was better.
looks ok.. Traz blows the crap out of this I have to say...
POKE39800,0
+pitchou1971
Um,...why the poke??
+Zeusdaz - The Unemulated Retro Game Channel
I have just typed the poke i used to get infinite lives with my Action Replay Mk6 Pro
the 0 makes SBC #$,01 to SBC #$,00 (substracts 0 life when lose a life), well i think you know what i am talking about. 9B78: 39800
