My grandpa (Resting in Heaven now) served in WWII as part of the postwar recovery process in Nagasaki, and he had a great old story about a time when he and a couple of his buddies helped to alleviate boredom and depression among the Nagasaki locals by teaching them to square dance!
I swear I had this exact guy during elementary school while we were learning square dancing. We all kinda weren't into it, but once it was time for the competition at the end, everyone took it super seriously.
i loved square dancing. I grew up in Wisconsin, but lived in Alabama first 5 years of my life. My father grew up in Mississippi. It helped me connect to my southern heritage.

I know I have heard them say it's for old folks. I tell them "I dare you to keep up with them!" As a younger person (started dancing at 20) I have panted, literally, trying to keep up! I also tell them it's the best form of exercise and it's really is fun! Though sadly most do not do this style anymore and do more modern music.

I was absolutely thrown off when randomly pulled into a large square dance circle in my 20s. Just when I thought I had it, the moves switched up! So much fun though!!
I'm another that had to learn square dancing in 5th grade. Hated it. But am SO GRATEFUL for the teachers that had the foresight of how important it would be though out our lives. All weddings in the 60s' and 70s' had them. Later in life, my wife and I enjoyed every week square dances in Hawaii. What fun!
I took square dancing lessons for two years as a kid back in the 1970's and loved it. I had a blast learning all the moves, listening to great music with a great caller, and I was at the age when I started to notice girls totally weren't yucky, so it was a great way to get to know them. :)

And New Braunfels sounds so funny for me because Braunfels is just like 'Brownrock' (or Brownstone/Brwonhill) in german...thats the amazing in the usa so much heritage combined into new...would love to see some day. I don't know if any of yall are from Texas but this is part of our curriculum if gym class anymore it seems. We always have to do this in music class to, but it is very fun 😀

I heard this word " Square Dance" while listening to Wynton Marsallis Jazz and later read about it in a short story titled "Voices " by Alice Munro and thus landed on this video to watch this much talked about dance form. My husband and I are square dancers and we love it very much. Many clubs are modern like this one but our club is still traditional and we wear traditional dress when dancing

They aren't vultures, they just developed it and spread it. It's called cultural diffusion. When one person who has a specific culture moves to a place with a wholly different culture, they subsequently spread their cultures to each other.
This is Northwest European culture sorry. This is like a slow ceilidh, or English country dance. It is boring to be honest. It is Scottish/ Irish ECT ..

Square dance is made of 4 couples who begin in a square and each move flows with the square only. A square can have 6 couples or If there are 8 couples they will have 2 squares set. If you were to see it from an elevated point of view, it would be more obvious. There is also a style called Round Dance, very popular in some areas especially central Appalachia where I am (WV). Round Dance is well suited to situations with odd numbers of couples. Round Dance can accommodate everyone regardless of numbers as long as each has a partner
There is a version of this Texas Star Dance danced in West Newbury, VT where monthly dances are held featuring tradition squares. The Texas Star dance is the only one where these local dancers use the Texas star handhold position in the star position. Otherwise star handholds in this dance hall are those used from the older contra dancing. This is a lovely dance and a great tune!

I grew up in a town called Campbell Missouri, in the southeast bootheel of the state. Square dancing was a daily exercise up till 10th grade. I got my future ex-wife pregnant about that time.
I remember dancing Rip and Snort in college. Only the caller never identified WHO so it was a race to be the fastest to head in first. We did bonk heads a few times, but it is fun, Square Dancing.

Speaking as a 22 yr. old to fellow young people. Square dancing is so much fun! It also could be considered a kind of sport to! You need practice to get good and it is a very fun way to exercise. If you like the kind of dancing they do now days you would love this! Find someone in your area that teaches if you can, bring a crowd of friends [Make sure to dare the boys into coming along because boys are scarce] and have FUN! I have found a club and been doing it a year and it is the best fun I ever have had! We young people need to step up. I know at least in my area the young people won't come and learn because it is for "Old People" and square dance clubs that have been around for years are having to close from lack of people. My own club had to close at the end of 2017 because there where just not enough people. Have not been able to go to a diffrent club due to weather since and I sure miss dancing. So.......I dare all you young people to go out and try it for a few weeks, you will LOVE IT!!!

My family was one of the first Dominicans in Texas in the 80's so I learned this as a kid in school lol
