That's the difference between being sent on missions against nations with top tier air defense systems and everyone else. The SR-71 just can't outrun top tier missiles and interceptors, so a new aircraft (or better satellites) was needed. On the other hand, the U-2 is perfectly capable against most everyone else, so it sticks around. The U-2's real problem/competition is drones. It probably only has a decade left before it is withdrawn from service.

@@timberwolf1575 SR-71 could outrun missiles and every other aircraft ever made even today, the issue is that it is completely redundant. Spy satellites get images of the same quality as the SR-71 and the U-2 can fly low for more detail.

years ago, before the plane was known to the public, one of the U-2s had a flameout, and couldn't get a restart. It is a great glider, but couldn't make it back to his base. The pilot chose to land at a small airport in Colorado. The airport was closed for the night, but the pilot activated the runway lights by radio. Imagine the surprise for the folks on the ground, when. An unidentified aircraft lands silently, and out comes an individual in a space suit. The airport thought aliens had landed.

It’s a high altitude recon plane people. Tandem landing gear configuration requires POGO landing gear, one outboard on each wing that fall out on takeoff. Full pressure suit worn by pilot limits visibility and gauging height above ground on landing, thus a chase car (with a another U-2 pilot driving), gives vertical guidance on landing via radio. AFTER landing, a wing will drag or rest on the ground. GROUND crew will jump on the high wing, raise the low wing, and REINSTALL the pogo gear

In 1984 I delayed a TR1 from taking off. My job was to pack down or remove snow from the edge of the taxiway leading to the runway at RAF Alconbury UK, following a massive snow storm (it snowed for a week straight, and then we spent another week after that cleaning up). It was only the second time I ever operated a front end loader, and the berm of snow created by the snow plows and Sikard snow brooms was too high for those low wings of the TR1, which extended beyond the edge of the taxiway. The pilot and the tower were not too happy about the situation, and the sergeant in charge of the snow removal detail relieved me of command of the loader, and went to work expertly leveling the snow to allow the plane to pass in no time. I was 19 at the time. I got a lot of practice after that.

The Dragon Lady is an American Icon. Ungainly on the ground but in flight so beautiful and graceful. Yes she does need people on the wing to level them to install the pogo wheels after landing. They stay there until she takes off again. You are somewhat correct on that point. Still, great video of the U-2 and the 400.

We had this plane on our base in South Vietnam. It's true about the pogo wheels on the wingtips. We unloaded a brand new SS396 El Camino one night , and it's job was to chase the U-2 down the runway when it landed. Evidently the Dodge pickup with a V-8 wasn't fast enough for the job. The El Camino was painted Air Force blue with genuine Air Force markings on the side. At the time it was no doubt classified.

LOL!!! So many interesting things about this video. Firstly, I as a U-2/TR-1 Crew Chief for 10yrs. One of the planes you see 1083 was my jet. Pogos - are the taxi accessory wheels. They are put in by the Pogo crew upon landing or picked up off the runway after take-off. In the video shown, 2 things: That plane was heavy on fuel (Wing droop) it should not take more than 2 people to raise the other wing. The pilot also did a terrible job to balancing fuel. In flight he can transfer left to right or right to left. Once on the ground, fuel will gravity transfer at about 7gals a minute. The airmen on wing, where were his Wing Socks? I know this is the desert and the sand screws up the special paint, but come on! The engine is a U-2 was a J57, but in 1998 it was switched out the GE F118-101 engine. A non-afterburning engine that is in many different military jets. PSD, why was there tape on the name tags? Lastly, the crew line up, this isn't the Thunderbird or Blue Angels, it don't happen that way.

Where space begins differs depending on the criteria one is using. To a radio engineer, 600 miles (the upper limit of the aurora) is the boundary, while to orbital spacecraft (satellite) operators it's about 100 miles. Physiologically (medically, as far as our bodies are concerned), the U-2's 70,000' altitude is in space, because our lungs can't tell the difference between the ~1/20th of an atmosphere (atm) pressure there, and the 0 atm pressure of interplanetary space. If the pilot lost pressurization at 70,000', he would pass out--and then die (if pressurization couldn't be restored within two or three minutes)--just as quickly as if he was on the Moon and his suit leaked.

I was at Davis-Monthan back in the early 1970's, when there was a U-2 squadron there. They used a Chevy ElCamino pickup to chase the plane when it landed. A guy would stand in the back of the pickup and the driver would get up underneath the wing as the plane slowed down, to catch it. If the wing wasn't caught, the heavier wing would tip onto the ground and the runway would have to shut down while the fuel was drained. The ElCamino was the coolest vehicle on base.
