Despite its issues, If you like bad puns, The ice age films are Great... I Still Chuckle at the Tae Kwon Do-do's... but it bothers me that none of the sequels ever featured the Humans... Not one. It would be interesting to see them encounter a fully grown Version of the Baby... but it never happens, and now it's been too long, and wouldn't make sense...

    • @antonanderson1965
      @antonanderson1965 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah, you might appreciate this movie a lot better after watching the sequels. Ice Age 2 is good, though there is some debate as to whether or not it is better than the first. Probably about the same. Ice Age 3 is eh. Not as good (or even that memorable) as the first two, but I didn't hate it. Ice Age 4 was crap. I didn't care for it at all. Ice Age Collision Course, I absolutely DESPISED! I could not even finish it! It was that stupid, that abysmally awful! Even Scratt's schtick was starting to get old and tiresome, and he is STILL the best character in the movie! The franchise just gets worse and worse, and yet somehow they still keep getting sequels! At least the first and second ones were memorable. This franchise went from your average early-2000s CGI kids film to Norm of the North levels bad, and yet they are still beating this dead horse of a franchise into the ground. The first two Ice Ages were decent films! What happened? With the exception of Ice Age 2, any time Blue Sky did a sequel, it SUCKED!
To be honest though, not all of Blue Sky's films are bad or even average. Their top 5 best in my opinion are The Peanuts Movie, Robots, Rio, Ice Age 1, and Ice Age 2 (can't really decide which Ice Age is better, so their positions are interchangeable. I'll let you decide). Get ready for disappointment with the remaining Ice Age films, but I will say this, The Peanuts Movie is actually REALLY good, and I think this is the Blue Sky film you should be looking forward to the most.

"DISNEYCEMBER 2022 blog day 02 gets cold with "ice age" when I heard that Disney brought the Blue sky studios that means we get to review the ice age series & other blue sky films I thought what fun so my thoughts on "ice age" the 1st one was just ok three animals trying to get a human baby back to the human village without the baby dying by other animals wasn't that hard it's keeping the baby alive that's the kicker so how does it hold up well the sloth can be annoying to some people but if you want little kids to watch this enjoy & what do I think bout the other ice age sequels ? i'll tell ya in the next ice age see what I did there ?"

Crazy fact, Diego was originally supposed to die at the end of the film. Denis Leary tried to warn producers this was a bad idea, but they didn’t listen. At a test screening the kids cried uncontrollably and the parents were pissed. They then went back and changed the ending.

In the "ugly baby's" defense, in 2002 even Pixar was still kinda figuring out how to make a "believable" and likeable baby. My favorite scene from the film is definitely where the group stumble upon a bunch of cave paintings. I'm specifically referring to Manny's backstory. Much like everyone else who watched the film as a kid, I used to think that Manny was the little mammoth, only for me to rewatch it years later and realize that he's actually the father, and that his wife and child were murdered. Yet, even though he has every right to despise humans, he never bore ill will towards them, or the baby. Even going out of his way to return him to his family. On top of all that, the scene is almost devoid of any dialog, but it hits you like a truck. It's probably one of the saddest but also poignant scenes I've seen in an animated film.

I'm not sure if it's just me but I feel there's an underlying theme that is completely lost on a lot of people including evidently Doug: this is the story of three extinct animals sacrificing their whole species to let the human race take their place.
Forget that it had a bunch of sequels (which I'm sure is an element that prevented Doug from enjoying it as a stand-alone film), there's no indication that the trio is going to survive at the end.
They had the option to go try and save themselves from the incoming cold, but instead they decide to bring that baby to his parents because it's the right thing to do, because the Earth belongs to the newer generations, or in this case to the more evolved species.
I may be reading too much into it, but honestly I don't see how a movie about the "Ice Age" can be read otherwise.
(...On a lighter note, since I've done a playlist of all DisneyCember videos sorted by movie release, this movie came out on March 15, 2002, exactly one week after Cadet Kelly and 4 days before The Hunchback of Notre Dame II.)

On a technical level, the snow and weather system was pretty groundbreaking for its time and budget. Autodesk actually partnered with BlueSky to further develop Maya’s features after Ice Age came out. It’s no longer considered state of the art, but seeing that Maya is the software that most animation students start with, this was kind of an important stepping stone.

I'm a little older than Doug, but saw it in theaters with my much younger siblings, and I remember being impressed by the Scrat segments for how cartoony they were. So much CGI at that point downplayed the elasticity of their characters-- it's there if you know where to look, but most characters are treated like puppets, solid objects in a space with articulation but little if any exaggeration. Remember the big deal they made about animating Sully's individual hairs in Monsters Inc, and how distracting the effect was in the actual movie. I remember the feeling of entering the uncanny valley even with humanless films like A Bug's Life. As pretty as some of them looked, as impressive as they looked, it never felt quite right. Scrat, at least to me, was the first modern CGI character (ouside of Lasseter's early Pixar shorts) that felt, if still not right in other ways, embraced the cartoony conventions of Looney Tunes. The rest of the film feels bog standard by comparison. Good luck with the sequels--they look better, and there are a few standout moments here and there (even outside of the increasingly absurd Scrat scenes), but oh my God, they get so much more irritating.

What Doug needs to realize is that at that point in the 2000's we only had a couple of good Disney movies left before the dark ages where they tried their hand at CGI and made really crappy live action movies (anyone remember the God awful Shaggy dog remake with Tim Allen?) Blue Sky, Pixar and DreamWorks had to take the place. So this movie here holds near and dear to those of who saw it as kids. It's near and dear to our hearts. Although it was strange in Doug's eyes it's one of the best movies of the 2000's (well in America at least.)

I always longed to see the baby Roshan find his saviours again and it HURTS that he _almost_ returned in Meltdown but the idea was shot down for its "predictability" becos I guess Lori Forte has no concept of 'full circle storytelling' or why people were hoping to see what new storylines an older baby coming back would create. >:(

If Doug can say he unironically enjoys the Bee Movie, I have no problem saying that I have watched and unironically enjoyed every one of the Ice Age movies. RIP Blue Sky Studios.

I think for a lot of us, Ice Age is our childhood and there's a lot of nostalgia attached to it. Looking back now, though, I can definitely see why an adult wouldn't be as entertained haha

I think the first movie was the first time I cried at a movie. When mufasa died I was in shock because I didn't know about death, but when Dennis Leary's character is thought to be dead I bawled my eyes out.

Oh, no...He thinks the sequels will be better when he didn't like the first one...which is commonly remembered as the best one.
Let's remember to pray for the Critic this Disneycember.

I love Blue Sky's movies, the only ones I haven't seen were Spies in Disguise and Ferdinand. The Ice Age movies, Epic, Peanuts and Robots probably being my favorites. Fun story, my name is Sid, so friends who knew I loved the movies would call me Sid the Sloth in school. Or Sid the Science Kid because science was my favorite class. I was fine with it, hey at least no one compared me to Sid from Toy Story!

@@Goleon I'll be sure to check it out! I'll be honest my biggest reason for disdain against Disney nowadays is how they did Blue Sky dirty. As mad as I am about getting rid of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, that seems petty by comparison. At least no one lost their jobs because of it.

Honestly I love this film even now as an adult because of how blunt manny the mammoth is as a character, his delivery just always feels so cold especially to Sid, which for me makes Sid the sloth funnier since he always gets beaten up and pushed down but he’s just always trying his best despite that. It’s not groundbreaking but the scene with manny’s past really was emotional especially when I first saw it on tv as a kid and I love it even now. I also like that Diego is sneaky and dark but manny being so cold sees right through it and is actually willing to stand up to him just for the baby. Honestly it’s a really good character dynamic between manny and Diego and the comedy of Sid keeps things lively. I think 2 is my favourite but I watch the first one a lot as well, but I’m glad you didn’t hate it at least, I just enjoy this and the second film and then leave the rest after that

Yes, Ice Age was supposed to be a 2D animated film directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman until 2 words. TITAN. A.E.

I was obsessed with these movies as a kid. While I sort of cringe at them as an adult, it did make me appreciate a tale of growing as a person and a whole life journey.

I you ask me, your opinion on Blue Sky’s output depends upon how much you appreciate the first Ice Age. The more you appreciate Ice Age 1 the more you understand the formula of Blue Skies content. Although they are known to have weak quality compared to studio’s like Pixar. They do have some unique strengths such as smaller use of verbal drama and larger use of visuals storytelling (like the cave painting). I genuinely wish Blue Sky’s artists would be either put back together or applied for other productions.
