Penceva come giovane aveva una bella voce del mezzosoprano vero, purtroppo le sue conoscenze sulla tecnica e l’impostazione erano molto discutibili…

2 è una cosa di avere di natura una voce bella è completamente altra di aumentare la bellezza della propria voce appoggiandosi sulla tecnica .
Tra i mezzosoprani d’origine bulgara
Elena Nicolai, Penka Dilova, Boika Kosseva, Zorova etc… erano dal vivo anni luce migliori della Penceva .

Nicolai , Kosseva, Dilova - accanto quando ascolto Penceva ho la sensazione che canta una ragazza appena uscita dal Conservatorio bulgaro ….
Se Penceva con i suoi problemi tecnici nel medium è nel registro acuto, il vibrato eccessivo e la sua vocalità poco professionale è "eccezionale" allora io mi chiamo Superman…
Bella voce ingolata del mezzosoprano vero, tecnica scarsa .

Parlando della Ulrica- La Nicolai, La Barbieri, Kosseva, Lilova, Obraztsova - erano a mio parere anni luce migliori della Penceva.
Dal vivo nessun confronto possibile.
Mariana Penceva - vocalità poco raffinata, vibrato orrendo, canto degno del Conservatorio degli anni ottanta…

This is the most fascinating voice I have heard for years!! Maybe greater than my idol Ewa Podles and by far the best Ulrica in Un Ballo of about 10-15 I have listened to. Who has better shown her affiliation with the Devil and all other demons in the underworld? Nobody. Who has this extraordinary range? Tell me if you know any.
Ewa Podles is the best contralto ever and she sang this role absolutely perfectly!

Ci sono due possibilità:
1 o Lei è una dilettante
2 o Lei è appena caduta dalla Luna ….
Accanto ai grandi Mezzosoprani che facevano parte del passato glorioso e i Mezzosoprani che avevo sentito dal vivo degli anni 1956-70 Penceva faceva pallida figura con la sua vocalità poco professionale.
Livello artistico degno del Conservatorio…
Da anni la vera arte lirica è morta, sepolta per sempre .

Actually the part originally called for a fortune teller in Sweden. I am not racist or stereotyping, but there were not many Swedish blacks in 1792. The reason Verdi had to change it was that Roman censors did not want to show King Gustavo (an actual king) getting killed, due to some political motives. After, he had to change it so that it was based in Boston around the end of the 1700's and had to use Riccardo as the name for the title and Madame Arvidson for Ulrica.

low notes are quite well done. Change into the higher register, not bad, but wanting. Ewa Podles is one to 'look to' for this aria.

Хороший качественный голос, не без недостатков, но нет оснований называть его "контральто". Для теперешнего "безрыбья" - хорошо. Но до славных образцов вокального и актёрского воплощения этой партии, созданных такими великими певицами, как Симионато, Барбьери, Образцова - далеко!

The low notes are great, but the command of the line in general is not. Some wobbles and her sound dips in and out too frequently.
Sorry what happened to Shirley Verrett and Florence Quivar. Giulietta Simionato, Fedora Baribieri, Ebe Stigiani. Irina Arkhapova, Viorica Cortez. Just some of the Mezzo's who might have sung it half decently as well.

No, the bottom wasn't there, she forced it. Nothing to compare to Ewa Podles. And yes, I HAVE seen Podles as Ulrica, here in Houston, Texas.
