    A lot of work but it turned out great. Much cooler then the typical square hatch.

      Off the shelf hatches have disadvantages, and I've seen them leak at sea, even Lewmar. This design makes it more difficult for water to get in.

    I am impressed with your designing, planning and execution of the construction. I like it when a person develops a plan and then follows it rather than building Willy Nelly and then scraping their work to start all over! You will be sailing in no time!

    I think in bad weather you’re going to get a significant amount of water through that reefing line eye. I hope you’ve made sure it has a way down to the bilges without causing too much trouble!

    • @ocean_capable_small_sailboat
      @ocean_capable_small_sailboat  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd hold judgements until the end. I could cork it with a rubber plug if a lot of water is coming on deck. There will also be a cleat on deck for this line, so it can be controlled from either place. I can test it out and always make adjustments.

    • @johntait8422
      @johntait8422 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ocean_capable_small_sailboat Fair enough, but when water is shooting into the doghouse is not the time to sort these things out. If you cross Oceans the question is when, not whether, green water will come across the deck in a storm you have to ride out. And how you are going to make ground up wind in bad weather is one of the things which needs careful thought sooner rather than later.

    • @markthomasson5077
      @markthomasson5077 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think I would have routed it to the rear of the doghouse, round a pulley and in through the side, or even two pulleys and through the rear.
      There will be a lot of water pressure on the tube when the waves sweep the deck.
      All said, being able to fully control the sail from within is going to keep you dry inside much better than having to open the hatch.

    Next Level work and video compilation Perry-
    So that’s how it all comes together or closes up after all the discussions. Huh !
    I’ve been trying to mentally picture it all in actuality or in “Perry” / human scale for quite some time...
    And now I’ve gotten to actually see it at 18:46 in this video, as you entered your boat, down the hatch entry, as you will from here on out, I suppose.

    Did it feel like you’ve seen some virtual reality visions and mini movies of it working out many times previous when it finally came time that you actually got your opportunity to board your boat down the hatch and close it shut in reality for the first time?
    Or was it anything like you had first envisioned early on in your build?
    Lastly, are sure Jester and Col. blondie Hasler was your influence for this hatch entryway?
    As you once claimed to be a 90’s kid... I got thinking, perhaps the tunnel-way piping of Nintendo’s Mario Bro’s or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles manhole getaway adventures might have subliminally stuck with you beyond your childhood and into adulthood or something like that perhaps... (Mostly kidding)
    I guess from here it is onward, to all those little details, from here on out, until it’s ready to set sail, right?

    Ingenious, to be sure. But getting up on top of the cabin to insert oneself does not strike me as a safe approach. I know Perry's intention is to mostly remain inside, thus the simplicity of the rig. The 580 class design (19' glassed ply sloops racing across the Atlantic right now) use an aft faced, vertical hatch that's much safer in use...in my view at least.

      @@dboboc it's the journey and not the destination. I bought 20 acres in 2010 and started hand planting trees around a 5 acre lake. My friends asked why. I said I wanted to have woods around the lake. I hand planted 3,000 trees 6 inches tall every year since. My friends said I'd be dead before I have my woods. I now have 45,000 trees (that lived, many did not) and some are 25 feet tall. I'm still planting. I enjoyed the all the effort, even in 100 degrees, planting just as much as I enjoy the beauty and wildlife the trees have brought.

    Hi, not sure about your concerns about GPS signal. If you buy a marine GPS unit you should get an external "mushroom" antenna and you can run the cable through a water tight grommet.
    If you type this into google you will see what I am talking about - "Xinuo XF-520 5'' Marine Satellite GPS Navigator Color LCD Screen Dual-Mode Positioning Boat Map Plotter GPS Navigation".
    I hope you were wearing a mask when sanding and cutting carbon fibre - the dust is nasty stuff.

      I've sailed before with no external antenna and I don't feel it's necessary. The units can send and receive their signal fine though the boat. If you watch my videos you'll see I'm pretty much always in a mask when it's needed.

      Exactamente. Ahora mismo en mi teléfono y dentro de casa recibo la señal de cuatro constelaciones de satélites: GPS, Glonass, Galileo y Osa Mayor

      Thanks for inquiring, the work will continue. Life and work just got a bit crazy this summer but I have a video I need to finish and post.
